    Compassionate attentive expert memory care

I moved my mom here and overall I'm very pleased. The staff are compassionate and attentive, the director is hands-on, and their assisted living/memory care is expert and respectful. The home-like, well-maintained facility offers active programming (harp visits, sing-alongs), weekly hair and nails, breakfast and laundry included, multiple unit options and thoughtful touches (they even arranged Chick-fil-A to test meals). They truly went above and beyond to make her comfortable and I'd recommend them for quality, caring long-term care.

    Summary of reviews

Riverside Cottages at the Shores presents as a smaller, home-oriented assisted living and memory-care option with several amenities intended to support resident comfort and social engagement. The community model emphasizes a non-commercial, home-like environment with self-contained units, porches, a reading room, included laundry, and all-inclusive pricing. Programming is active and varied — reviewers mentioned music visits, sing-alongs, weekly grooming, and other engagement opportunities — and several families praised the facility for fostering a supportive, community-focused atmosphere.

Care and staffing are areas of clear contrast in the reviews. Many families described compassionate, resident-centered staff and praised attentive on-site leadership; examples include staff who went beyond typical duties to make residents comfortable and directors who were accessible. Those positive accounts cite dignity, respectful interactions, and continuity of care as strengths. At the same time, other accounts describe notable variability in care quality and responsiveness. Specific operational concerns raised point to gaps in clinical monitoring and wound/preventive-care oversight, and some families reported outcomes that prompted serious concern. This pattern suggests that care consistency can be uneven and that prospective families should ask about staffing patterns, clinical oversight, and care-plan review processes during visits.

Dining receives mixed feedback. The facility offers breakfast and shows willingness to accommodate preferences on occasion; reviewers described instances where staff arranged alternative meals to test suitability. However, there are also comments indicating inconsistent meal quality and dissatisfaction with menu variety or preparation. Prospective residents should inquire about menu cycles, food-service staffing, and how dietary preferences and texture-modified needs are managed.

Facilities and activities are generally described positively: many reviewers found the building well-maintained and the environment warm and safe, with active programming that supports engagement. Conversely, isolated maintenance and safety lapses were mentioned (for example, furniture failures and other issues), suggesting that operational oversight in facility upkeep could be strengthened to reduce safety risk and improve reliability.

Management and operational transparency are mixed. Several reviewers singled out an involved director and responsive leadership as strengths, noting timely resolution of concerns. Counterbalancing this are reports of communication breakdowns with families, limited assistance during resident transitions (including discharge/placement support), and broader concerns about financial and ownership transparency; one review raised an allegation involving a staff member’s financial conduct. These items indicate that administrative policies — including incident communication, discharge procedures, and financial transparency — warrant careful review by prospective families.

Overall, Riverside Cottages appears to offer a warm, community-oriented option with strong examples of compassionate caregiving and active programming. The dominant theme in the feedback is variability: many families had very positive experiences, while others encountered operational and clinical inconsistencies that materially affected care. Recommended next steps for prospective residents and families include in-person visits, meetings with clinical leadership, review of staffing ratios and recent inspection or licensing records, clear documentation of care plans and incident protocols, and written clarification of financial and discharge policies before making a placement decision.

About Riverside Cottages at the Shores

Riverside Cottages at the Shores sits quietly in the St. Augustine Shores neighborhood, surrounded by gardens and outdoor space on a five-acre campus, and the place feels welcoming, not at all like a hospital or anything too formal, with inviting porches, reading rooms, and plenty of cozy spots for relaxing or visiting. The owners, Robert and Michele Carmines, bring decades of experience and run the place themselves, keeping a caring, family-like atmosphere where the staff knows the residents and what they need, as there's a high staff-to-resident ratio and everyone gets help tailored just for them. People living here can pick from three sizes of self-contained units, each with air conditioning, private bathrooms, and a kitchenette, and all rooms come furnished, plus housekeepers handle cleaning, laundry, and even overnight clothes washing, so residents get fresh linens and towels every day.

The kitchen offers home-cooked meals made by an executive chef, and dining feels more like a restaurant, with options for all day dining, flexible breakfast times, and meals to help those with allergies or diabetes. Residents can make use of the wellness center, computer room, movie theater, game and activity rooms, a fitness area, and a small library, and outside, there are walking paths, gardens, and plenty of places to sit in the sun or under a porch roof. People stay busy here with all kinds of activities, like arts, music programs, games, resident-run clubs, group outings, live music, scheduled daily events, or just enjoying a book in a quiet corner.

The care at Riverside Cottages covers just about everything, including medication management, help with bathing and dressing, help with meals, and managing special diets or medical needs like diabetes, and the staff can handle memory care, respite care, and skilled nursing as well, so they watch for any changes and adjust as needed. Internet and cable TV are included, and every room has a phone and high-speed Wi-Fi, making it easy to stay in touch with family or stream shows. The facility uses a modern security system with emergency call buttons in rooms and common areas, runs 24-hour supervision, and always has a staff member nearby.

Transportation is available too, so residents can go to doctor's appointments, shopping, or group outings; the team handles all the details. Barbers and beauticians visit on-site, and services like incontinent care supplies, toiletries, and all the basics are provided in one package price, so families aren't faced with surprises. The place doesn't try to fit everyone into one mold, and instead, care plans are personal, flexible, and ready to change if someone's needs do. There's a focus on keeping things home-like and supportive, not institutional, and it's easy to schedule a visit or tour to see the place yourself. The place can support up to 72 residents and is licensed by the state of Florida, serving those who want independent living, assisted living, memory care, or just a break with respite care. The whole idea here seems to be about making people feel comfortable, safe, and part of a caring community while letting everyone keep as much independence as possible.
