    Spotless facility; attentive, family-like staff

I moved my mom to North Star and we're very happy - the facility is beautiful, spotless, and feels like home. The staff are warm, attentive, and treat residents like family, going above and beyond (especially during COVID), and the meals are restaurant-quality, nutritious and delicious. With spacious renovated apartments, a lively activities calendar, and a safe, convenient location, my family feels confident and grateful - I highly recommend it.

    Summary of reviews

North Star Assisted & Senior Living is consistently described as a well-appointed, active independent‑living community with strong demand. Reviews emphasize a clean, hotel-like campus, well-maintained grounds, and attractive common areas and dining rooms. Apartments are noted as spacious for the category, often featuring kitchenettes or full appliances, ample storage, and accessible bathroom options. The community offers multiple on-site amenities — gym, media/theater room, beauty salon, courtyard and regular transportation to doctors and shopping — and many reviewers highlighted the convenience of included services such as weekly housekeeping, linen laundering, cable and Wi‑Fi.

Staffing and direct care are among the facility's strongest features in the feedback. Caregivers, CNAs and servers are frequently described as warm, attentive and relationship-oriented; many families report that staff learn residents' names and provide personalized attention. Several reviewers praised specific staff members and the nursing presence, and described smooth, low-stress transitions for new residents. At the same time, comments indicate staffing variability: there are recurring notes about turnover, slower service at times (especially among newer servers), and differences in staff performance between independent‑living and assisted‑living areas.

Dining and activities are central to the community experience. Many reviews applaud a restaurant-style dining program with an extensive menu, buffet options, themed meals and the ability to order à la carte or takeout. The activity schedule is described as robust — daily exercise, games, crafts, religious services, reading groups and frequent outings — contributing to a lively social environment. However, dining quality and meal-service reliability are mixed: while some residents call the food excellent, others report declining consistency, longer waits, lukewarm meals and menu or portion changes tied to kitchen staffing fluctuations.

Operational and management themes merit considered attention. Multiple families raised concerns about affordability — including rising rents, ancillary charges for supplies or medications, and required waitlist deposits — and some described billing errors or unclear fee communication. A subset of comments points to inconsistent housekeeping or sanitation in particular units and to perceived gaps in assisted‑living practices, especially for residents with cognitive impairment; these observations translated into concerns about supervision and care consistency in the assisted-living side. Additionally, limited memory-care capacity and restricted guest parking were noted as practical limitations for some families.

Overall, North Star projects a high-quality independent-living environment with an emphasis on hospitality, social programming and individualized frontline caregiving. Prospective residents and families who prioritize restaurant-style dining, active programming and a well-maintained campus are likely to find the community appealing. Those evaluating budget, assisted‑living needs (particularly memory care), or who require strong assurances about billing transparency and consistent assisted‑living staffing should raise these topics explicitly during touring and contract review to confirm current practices and any recent operational changes.

About North Star Assisted & Senior Living

North Star Assisted & Senior Living sits right in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, close to the river and the Centennial Trail, with easy access to I-90, and you can tell right away there's a community feeling when you walk inside with music, friendly staff, and the smell of home-cooked food. This place has the largest senior apartments in Coeur d'Alene, offering studios, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom styles, and all of them come with kitchenettes that have mini-fridges and microwaves, private or shared bath areas, plus light housekeeping and same-day maintenance, so folks don't have to worry about chores or repairs. The Fireside Restaurant serves all-day dining, so residents can pick between daily specials or something from the main menu, and there's a Bistro too, so people gather, have coffee, and enjoy a chat throughout the day.

There's a full calendar of activities-social, educational, and recreational-with music, happy hours, games, and outings; those who want worship or devotional services can find them onsite and offsite. The place really makes things easy, with senior-friendly features like wheelchair accessible showers, full tubs, and wider doors in both independent and assisted living wings. Residents can get help with daily tasks, and staff are on hand around the clock, especially in the newly opened assisted living wing with fourteen big, bright apartments equipped with private showers and refrigerators.

If someone needs a short-term stay, North Star has respite care, along with care for people with Alzheimer's or dementia in secure memory care units, and there's even access to hospice services. Folks who can still live on their own choose independent living, and as needs change, they can move to assisted living or skilled nursing without leaving the campus, which keeps things steady and comfortable as the years go by.

You'll see neighbors out on walking trails down to the river's edge, or sitting in outdoor and indoor common areas, laughing, listening to music, or meeting up for meals. People like the parking, the spots near bus lines, and the complimentary transportation for appointments or events. They offer vegetarian meals, have a beauty shop onsite, and make sure the community feels welcoming. North Star really tries to keep everyone involved and active, making it a good fit for healthy retirees who want a lively, maintenance-free place to call home, but it also supports folks who need more help as time goes on, whether it's with personal care, medical support, or finding a sense of belonging in their later years.
