    Caring staff, clean, comfortable, recommended

I moved my aunt here and I'm very pleased - the staff are caring and friendly, the community is spotless and home-like, and the apartments are spacious and comfortable. They offer lots of activities, outings/transportation, good meals, safety features and on-site nursing/CNA care, plus helpful Medicare/financial assistance. Management is responsive and attentive; I would recommend this place to family and friends.

    Summary of reviews

Knollwood Retirement Community presents a generally positive package for prospective residents who want an active, service-rich environment. Strengths repeatedly cited include caring and accessible direct-care staff (including 24/7 CNA presence), clean and well-maintained facilities, spacious private rooms, and an easy-to-navigate layout. The community offers a wide range of on-site amenities — fitness space, whirlpool, activity room, pool table, and multiple evening events — plus organized transportation for outings and appointments. Financially, the facility accepts Medicaid and holds Medicare certification, and there are options for pharmacy delivery, pendant safety systems, and some all-inclusive pricing or financial-assistance offerings.

On staffing and care, many families describe staff as friendly, responsive, and dedicated; the activities director and day-to-day caregivers receive particular praise. At the same time, there are consistent indications of staffing instability: turnover and understaffing have been associated with delays in attending to residents and uneven continuity of care. Prospective residents should evaluate current staffing ratios and observe care routines during a visit to assess fit for higher-dependency needs.

Dining and nourishment are mixed themes. Several accounts praise varied menus, diabetic options, and social dining events. Other accounts describe inconsistent meal temperature and occasional shortages or limited availability. Guest dining space is limited at times, which can affect family visits during meals. Observing a mealtime and asking about kitchen capacity and scheduling will help clarify daily dining reliability.

Activity programming and common-area furnishings are clear strengths. The community runs frequent social and recreational events (bingo, game nights, shopping days, holiday outings), and facilities are often described as bright, recently updated, and well-decorated. Private living spaces are described as roomy, and some apartments come furnished with amenities such as free cable.

Management and admissions practices are an area of concern to investigate. While some families praise responsiveness when issues arise, there are substantive process concerns around admissions and finance: opaque contract language, high upfront fees, and pressure related to move-in timing or expectations about selling a home. Reviewers also describe complexities around Medicaid-related terms; prospective residents and families should request and review the full contract, ask for written explanations of any insurance or Medicaid requirements, and confirm refund/cancellation terms before committing.

Safety and sanitation require targeted questions during a visit. The facility is commonly described as clean and well cared for, yet there are isolated accounts of odor concerns in certain common areas and of theft from resident rooms, indicating potential gaps in housekeeping or security practices. Ask about housekeeping schedules, odor-control protocols, room-access procedures, and the facility’s incident and property-loss reporting procedures.

Bottom line: Knollwood appears to be a good option for seniors seeking an active, socially oriented retirement setting with on-site care services and accessible amenities. The strongest features are its person-focused staff, activity offerings, and physical environment. Families should balance these strengths against operational concerns — especially admissions transparency, staffing consistency, meal-service reliability, and personal-property security — by reviewing contracts carefully, touring during peak activity and meal times, and asking for current staffing and safety metrics prior to move-in.

    About Knollwood Retirement Community

Knollwood Retirement Community sits in a quiet part of Caseyville, Illinois, close to Columbus Square, Downtown Caseyville, and several local schools like Caseyville Elementary School, Collinsville Middle School, and Collinsville High School, though it's a spot where most folks will need a car to get around unless they're near the bus lines that run by. The building was put up in 2011 and stands out for being fully wheelchair accessible and easy to navigate, with both furnished and unfurnished apartments that let residents settle in their own way, and many of the rooms look out on pretty views. Knollwood helps adults aged 65 and older with daily activities like bathing, dressing, medication reminders, all meals-including vegetarian plates-housekeeping, laundry, and all utilities except for phone service, so there's less worry about the chores piling up.

The team of caregivers at Knollwood go through complete background checks and are experienced in giving supportive and assisted living care, and with 24-hour staff and some medical staff on site around the clock, residents get help when they need it while still keeping as much independence as possible. They set up a full calendar of daily activities, both on site and out in the community, from group trips to cookouts and Fourth of July gatherings, and they keep things lively and social, hoping residents stay active and connected. There's an on-site beautician, devotional services, outdoor spaces with a water fountain, and several common areas for relaxing or visiting with neighbors, plus resident parking and a shuttle for local trips.

Meals are prepared by staff who plan nutritious options every day, and there's always a focus on companionship, safety, and a homelike feeling in the community, with staff offering personalized help with whatever each resident needs. Extra support is available if folks need respite care or hospice services. Knollwood gets high marks from families and residents, with a review score of 4.8 from 12 reviews, and it's known for being associated with Knollwood St. Clair Retirement Center. For those who like to spend their days busy and social, or sometimes just want a quiet place by the fountain, this community offers plenty of options in a setting that's both comfortable and supportive.
