    Compassionate Christ-centered care, like family

I'm very pleased with the compassionate, Christ-centered staff who treated my loved one like family in a clean, home-like facility. Nurses, therapists, and volunteers were attentive, communicated well, and made the transition smooth while offering engaging activities and individualized care. I would recommend this community for quality, caring support.

    Summary of reviews

Overall sentiment: Reviews for Hoosier Health & Living are overwhelmingly positive, with a dominant and recurring emphasis on the quality of the staff and the personal, family-like environment. Multiple reviewers use words like "caring," "compassionate," "loving," and "phenomenal" to describe interactions with nurses, aides, and other team members. Praise is consistent across admissions, long-term residents, and family members, indicating that staff-resident relationships and daily caregiving are perceived as major strengths. Cleanliness and facility upkeep are also repeatedly noted, with many reviewers calling the building "exceptionally clean," "well-maintained," and "beautiful." The facility's Christ-centered focus and strong ties to the local community and volunteers appear to reinforce the warm, home-like culture described in many accounts.

Care quality and staff relationships: The most frequent theme is the high caliber of interpersonal care. Reviewers highlight individualized attention, staff remembering residents' names and preferences, and a sense that residents are "loved like family." Several comments single out exceptional responsiveness — including after-hours communication and good coordination during admission — and multiple accounts mention that families feel reassured and supported. Nurses and caregiving staff are repeatedly described as compassionate and organized, and many reviewers explicitly state they would recommend the community based on the caregiving they observed.

Facility, cleanliness, and atmosphere: The physical environment receives strong positive feedback. Reviews consistently note clean rooms, a neat facility, and a warm, inviting atmosphere that contributes to a sense of home. Personal belongings and home-like rooms are mentioned as contributing to residents feeling comfortable. The facility’s maintenance and appearance are frequently singled out as strengths, and reviewers connect that cleanliness and organization to the overall quality of care.

Admissions, communication, and family involvement: Multiple reviewers praise the admission process and the support they received during transitions, describing it as smooth and reassuring. Communication with families is emphasized as exceptional — with timely updates, responsiveness to questions, and a general perception that staff keep family members informed. The presence of volunteers and the community/faith-based identity of the home are also noted as positive influences that foster a supportive environment for residents and families.

Reputation, recommendations, and consistency: Many reviews include explicit high ratings, recommendations, and words like "highly recommend," "5-star," or "best care." The recurring nature of praise across different reviewers suggests a consistent culture of person-centered care rather than isolated incidents. Reviewers who have personal or family history with the facility (e.g., volunteering since childhood, having a grandparent live there) frequently comment on continuity of care and community ties.

Negative feedback and gaps: While the review set is strongly positive, there is one explicit negative outlier: a reviewer who regrets placing their mother at the facility and would give "zero stars." That critical review lacks detail in the summaries provided, so it cannot be assessed for specific operational or clinical issues; nevertheless, it is a notable contrast to the otherwise consistent praise and should be investigated further if making placement decisions. Beyond that, reviews contain limited information about certain operational areas: dining and meal quality are rarely mentioned, and there is little detail on activity programming, social engagement schedules, clinical outcome metrics, or staffing ratios. Those absences are not complaints per se but represent informational gaps that prospective residents and families may want to explore directly with the facility.

Takeaway and recommendations: Hoosier Health & Living appears to excel at creating a compassionate, faith-oriented, family-like community with clean, well-maintained facilities and strong family communication. The dominant strengths reported are staff attitudes and relationships, individualized attention, smooth admissions, and community involvement. Prospective residents or families should verify specifics not covered extensively in reviews — notably meal service, activities programming, clinical staffing levels, and any details related to the single negative review — by asking the facility for menus, activity calendars, staffing ratios, care plans, and references. Overall, the reviews portray a community where emotional care, cleanliness, and family communication are high priorities, with one isolated negative account that warrants follow-up.

    About Hoosier Health & Living

Hoosier Health & Living sits in Brownstown, Indiana as a senior living community that offers a wide range of care options, and you see everything from independent living to skilled nursing, memory support, and even hospice care right inside the same place, which makes it easy for folks to age in place without having to move around a lot, and the garden homes are set up for more independent folks, while the main health care center holds 97 certified beds with an average of about 86 residents each day, so there's almost always activity going on somewhere, whether it's in the courtyards, patios, or the common rooms where people gather to chat or take part in group activities. The care at Hoosier Health & Living includes independent living services, assisted living options, memory support, skilled nursing, rehabilitation, home health (Medicare-certified), long-term care, short-term rehab, respite care, and even adult day services, and there's a therapy program to help people recover after surgery or illness and get back home if possible, and if someone needs dialysis or hospice, they've got that covered, too.

Amenities include a beauty salon, barbershop, laundry, housekeeping, and nursing help, and every resident can access physical, occupational, and speech therapy services, or take advantage of support from the memory support team and skilled nursing staff who watch out for those needs, and since the community also offers independent living garden homes and assisted living apartments, there's a choice for people who want more privacy or who need more help day-to-day, and folks can tour the place with their families before making a move. Hoosier Health & Living is run as a non-profit provider, operated by Jackson County Schneck Memorial Hospital and managed alongside Midwest Christian Villages, Inc. since 2012, with ties to Christian Horizons and the CareDon Resource Hub, plus an online presence with a Facebook page and services linked to Meta platforms like Messenger and Instagram for those who want to stay updated or keep in touch with families.

Now, the facility does have some areas that need work: the latest inspection report lists 15 deficiencies, including issues with infection control, safe respiratory care, and resident rights like managing medications, and inspectors also found some problems with maintenance and cleanliness in the nursing home areas, and the nurse turnover rate is 42.7% with an average of 3.13 nurse hours per resident per day, so that's something worth knowing if staffing consistency is important for your needs. Hoosier Health & Living welcomes people living with disabilities and those who need special care, and the facility has maintained more than 10 garden homes for seniors who want to live a bit more independently but still have access to help if something comes up. The place also offers daily activities, opportunities for short-term rehab, and a focus on supporting families as part of their approach, as shown by their "family first senior living communities" badge. The "Hoosier Health & Living" logo is used throughout, and overall, the community tries to cover a big range of care types and services for older adults in and around Brownstown.
