    Very pleased with community amenities

I'm very pleased living here - the staff are warm, professional and genuinely welcoming, and my spacious, well-appointed 3-bed apartment feels like home. Chef-prepared meals (cafeteria-style during COVID), daily activities, weekly housekeeping, concierge/valet, van service to doctors and onsite amenities (theater, gym, salon, store, bank, PT) give me convenience, comfort and a real sense of family; I'd recommend it.

    Summary of reviews

Overall impression Sable Lodge presents as a newly built, well-appointed independent living community with a broad range of on-site services and amenities. The facility is consistently described as clean, modern, and thoughtfully designed, with spacious apartments that include full kitchens and laundry hookups in many units. Common areas are comprehensive and upscale: a movie theater, exercise room, salon, bank branch, small store, billiards room, and multiple lounges create a dense, all-in-one environment that many residents and families find convenient. Staff and care quality Staff and management receive uniformly positive remarks. Reviewers describe on-site, live-in managers and an attentive concierge service operating 24/7. Housekeeping, maintenance, and move-in assistance are noted as strengths, and staff are characterized as friendly, informative, and responsive. Clinical services available on-site or by arrangement (including physical therapy and assistance options) support residents who wish to remain independent while accessing help as needed. The overall tone from families is that staff conduct and problem resolution are professional. Dining and food service Dining is a prominent feature: chef-prepared meals are included and many reviewers praise the quality, flexibility of dining pace, and room service offerings. At the same time, a pattern of mixed feedback emerges: some residents praise outstanding meals and variety, while others cite limited healthy or grilled options and a heavier reliance on certain proteins. The meal-service format has varied (including cafeteria-style service during COVID-related adjustments), and this variability contributes to perceptions of inconsistent dining experience for some residents. Activities and social life The community supports an active social calendar with daily events, weekly outings, resident-led clubs, performances, and recurring programs (happy hours, card groups, exercise classes, and creative exhibits). Reviewers commonly report a strong social life and frequent opportunities for engagement; however, participation varies by individual preference—some residents are highly engaged while others remain more private or less active. Facility-level considerations Several operational patterns are relevant to prospective residents. Cost is frequently mentioned as a limiting factor: monthly rates are described as high, and additional charges (garage parking, valet, or one-time transfer fees) can add materially to move-in and ongoing costs. The building’s location and design emphasize convenience and an upscale, hotel-or-cruise-ship feel; some residents appreciate that atmosphere, while others find it less homey. Outdoor grounds and scenic views are limited due to the development’s strip-mall adjacency, which may matter to buyers prioritizing landscaping or vistas. Availability of smaller studio units is constrained at times. Bottom line Sable Lodge will appeal to prospective residents seeking a modern, full-service independent living setting with extensive amenities, strong staff support, and an active programming calendar. Key trade-offs are cost, potential variability in dining preferences and service format, and a more institutional/hotel-like ambience with limited outdoor grounds. Families should weigh the value of included services and staffing against the higher fees and evaluate dining offerings for specific dietary needs prior to commitment.

    About Sable Lodge Retirement Community

Sable Lodge Retirement Community sits in South Portland, Maine, where lighthouse views and harbor scenery create a calm setting for folks 55 or older who want comfort and safety as they age, and you'll notice right away that the staff and residents like to greet each other and keep things friendly. This all-inclusive, resort-style place gives seniors a chance to enjoy independent living, assisted living, memory care, and skilled nursing, all under one roof, with help available when needed and as care needs change. Apartments come in studio, one, two, or three-bedroom floor plans, and every unit's got climate control, window coverings, full kitchens with real appliances, cable, phone, and internet included, and there's no extra fee for pets-so furry friends are welcome, and that always brightens things up.

Sable Lodge covers housekeeping, laundry, and maintenance, and staff and live-in managers stay on-site 24/7 with an Emergency Alert System and round-the-clock concierge services, which makes things less stressful for everyone. Folks have a lot to do, like billiards, games in the arcade, group activities, and regular outings thanks to a Lifestyle Director who creates a busy calendar full of social events, health programs, educational talks, exercise classes, and devotional services both onsite and offsite. The building's got indoor and outdoor common spaces, a three-mile greenbelt walkway with views of the harbor, a library, theater with stadium seating, spa, fitness center, lounge with a bar, beauty salon, pharmacy, and even a small bank on Main Street, so just about everything's within easy reach.

Dining uses the Signature Freedom Dining Program, which brings chef-prepared meals three times a day with all sorts of fresh choices for different diets, and if someone isn't feeling up to joining in the dining hall, a meal delivery service brings food right to the apartment door. For people who love to travel, residents can visit other Resort Lifestyle Communities around the country without extra costs, and for folks who need more support, there's skilled nursing, assisted living, and memory care with services for Alzheimer's and dementia, so families know loved ones can stay in one place even as needs change. Utilities and most services are covered in the monthly rate, the staff focuses on giving everyone a helping hand when needed, and there's always a sense that it's easy to find a friend or something meaningful to do. Pet-friendly, maintenance-free living, and a steady schedule of things to learn and enjoy make Sable Lodge a solid choice for those seeking a safe, social, and comfortable retirement community with flexible living and care options.
