    Compassionate attentive home-like end-of-life care

I'm very pleased with this small, home-like facility - the staff is compassionate and attentive, with nurses (Lori Barker especially) providing personalized, family-style care and excellent end-of-life support. The place is clean, comfortable, safe, and offers home-cooked meals and warm social interaction that gave our family real peace of mind. I would recommend it.

    Summary of reviews

Reviews for Brookhaven AFC Home are strongly mixed, with a clear split between accounts praising individualized, compassionate care and accounts describing operational and management shortfalls. Several reviews emphasize positive hands-on caregivingโ€”family-like staff interactions, attentive support, and calm end-of-life careโ€”while others raise substantive concerns about the facility's day-to-day operations, maintenance, and staff performance.

Care and staff: Many families describe staff who are warm, attentive, and effective at meeting residents' personal needs; there are repeated references to teamwork, respectful interactions, and staff who make residents comfortable. At the same time, a number of reviews raise concerns about staff conduct and communication tone, including instances of staff behavior that families found inappropriate. Those critiques are linked in some accounts to limited training, inconsistent staff responsiveness, and variable levels of resident engagement. The overall pattern suggests the presence of dedicated caregivers alongside gaps in staff training, supervision, or consistency.

Dining and activities: Several reviewers praise daily, home-cooked meals and routine enrichment programming. Conversely, other reviews describe inconsistent meal quality, small portions, and questions about food sourcing and continuity. Activity offerings are described by some as regular and beneficial, but the inconsistent descriptions of meals indicate variability in the dining program that prospective families should clarify during visits.

Facilities and maintenance: Reviews point to repeated maintenance and equipment issues: broken appliances, water interruptions, driveway potholes, and delayed repairs. Concerns about crowding, small two-person rooms, and wheelchairs or equipment blocking common areas were also noted. Cleanliness accounts are mixedโ€”some reviews describe a clean, odor-free interior, while others describe sanitation and housekeeping shortfalls. These observations indicate uneven facility upkeep and inconsistent housekeeping standards.

Management and notable patterns: Several reviews criticize management and ownership for organizational disorganization and limited oversight, which reviewers link to staffing challenges and maintenance backlogs. Positive accounts often single out frontline staff rather than management, suggesting that leadership and operational systems may be weaker than direct caregiving. Given the polarized feedback, prospective residents and families should conduct an on-site visit, request up-to-date staffing and maintenance records, ask about food sourcing and portioning, review training protocols, and observe residentโ€“staff interactions. These steps can help determine whether the facility's strengths align with a specific resident's needs and whether the operational weaknesses have been addressed.

    About Brookhaven AFC Home

Brookhaven AFC Home is a small community in Columbiaville, Michigan, that serves seniors and adults with special needs in a home-like setting, and the place holds up to 11 residents in studio units, single bedrooms, or shared quarters, and people there get care that fits their needs whether they're independent and active or need support with daily tasks like getting dressed, bathing, or taking medicine, and there's always trained staff around the clock. The facility covers a lot of needs-assisted living, memory care for people living with dementia or Alzheimer's, home care, skilled nursing, adult daycare, residential care, and respite stays, so folks can get high acuity or diabetic care, help with showering, incontinence management, and non-ambulatory support, and there're services for people with developmental disabilities, physical handicaps, mental illness, and even traumatic brain injuries as well, since Brookhaven works to welcome and respect each person's differences.

You'll find group homes, personal apartments, and assisted living homes, many of which are barrier free for wheelchair use and those with physical impairments, and the property includes a dining room, cafรฉ, gardening spaces, a media room, and public living areas, plus each room has central air, private bath options, emergency systems, and safety or disabled access features like grab bars. Meals can meet special dietary needs, and there's laundry, money management help, and regular housekeeping to keep things tidy, and folks can use internet and enjoy activities or outings, devotional services, and social programs both on and offsite.

The organization started back in 1989 as a family-run, nonprofit group-Redwood Inc.-and they uphold dignity for all, serving people of different ages and care levels, and they hold an adult medium group home license, number AM440290998, which covers their 3280 Trillium Lane address in Oxford, MI, and their license ran from December 2022 to December 2024, but as of July 1, 2023, they're closed. Residents who lived at Brookhaven got services like 24-hour care, medication management, fall management, routine health checks, and transportation for groceries, plus there's off-street parking, secured premises, walking paths, and private areas when someone wants their own space, and the community lets people bring pets if they like. So while the place did a lot and covered plenty of ground, it focused on making things easier for those who lived there, gave folks a say in how their care was planned, and supported everyone, whether older or facing other challenges, to live as safely and comfortably as possible.
