    Good aides, poor management, hygiene

I had a mixed experience: several caregivers were genuinely caring, meds were usually given on time, and the food could be good, but administration felt toxic and money-driven. Staff seemed undertrained, overworked and underpaid-high turnover, hygiene problems (urine smell, soiled briefs) and worrying medication/diabetes lapses made me lose trust. I'm grateful for the good aides, but I'd caution families before sending loved ones here.

    Summary of reviews

The reviews describe a facility with a mixture of positive individual caregiving experiences alongside a number of persistent operational concerns. Some families and visitors highlight caregivers who are capable and caring, reports of on-time medication administration, and occasions of appealing meal preparation. The facilityโ€™s pricing was noted as economical by reviewers, and there has been at least one management transition that some respondents associated with attempts to improve operations.

Care quality appears uneven. Reviewers raised substantive concerns about medication-management practices, including missing medications and inconsistencies in insulin/diabetes care; these point to broader gaps in medication controls and clinical oversight. Several comments specifically cite an absence of licensed nursing staff on site and reliance on minimally trained personnel for medication tasks, which suggests limited clinical capacity for residents with complex medical needs. While some caregivers are described positively, the overall pattern indicates inconsistency in care delivery and responsiveness.

Staffing and leadership issues are prominent themes. Reviews describe high turnover, lateness, and staffing instability, along with assertions of underpaid, overworked employees. Many remarks characterize the facilityโ€™s leadership as a source of low morale; there are also accounts of staff being dismissed after raising concerns. These elements together indicate a workplace culture and management approach that some families find problematic and that may contribute to variability in resident care.

Dining and nutrition receive mixed feedback. A number of reviewers praised meal taste and presentation, while others flagged a repetitive, carbohydrate-heavy menu with insufficient protein for some residents. This suggests inconsistent menu planning or execution and warrants specific questions about dietary accommodations and nutrition monitoring for residents with higher protein or diabetic needs.

Facility and routine-care observations include cleanliness and odor concerns in common areas and indications of incontinence-care lapses. These sanitation concerns, combined with staffing instability, may affect daily hygiene routines and the overall living environment. Activity programming and social engagement received little consistent comment in the reviews provided, leaving an unclear picture of recreational offerings.

Safety and behavioral management are additional areas of concern. Reviewers mentioned incidents that suggest gaps in how the facility manages resident behaviors and ensures a safe environment for both residents and staff. Taken together with the clinical oversight and staffing issues, these patterns indicate areas that require verification during a tour and pre-move assessment.

For prospective residents and families: verify current licensure and on-site clinical staffing levels, ask for the facilityโ€™s medication administration policies and training protocols, request recent inspection or survey results, review sample menus and nutrition plans for specific dietary needs, and inquire about staff turnover rates and recent leadership changes. A focused tour with direct questions about clinical supervision, sanitation practices, behavioral-management protocols, and opportunities to speak with current families or staff can help clarify whether the facilityโ€™s strengths align with a prospective residentโ€™s needs.

    About Southridge Assisted Living

Southridge Assisted Living stands on Lafranier Road in Traverse City, MI, and gives seniors a home where they can feel some independence while getting help with daily tasks, and the staff makes sure everyone feels safe and comfortable, which is important when people need some support but want to keep their own way of life, and you'll find full-time activity directors coming up with things to do, like art projects in the art room, games in the game room, or a movie in the theater, plus outings to places in the community or for devotional services, and some folks even bring their small, quiet pets if approved because a dog or cat can make things feel more like home. The staff work around the clock to help with things like medication, personal care, and laundry, and if someone needs skilled nursing or memory care, they can get that too, since personalized care plans guide the level of support each resident needs. Apartments come in studio, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom options, all with private bathrooms and closets, and residents eat meals together family-style in the main dining room or sometimes in a private dining room for special occasions, and meals are served by staff who know the importance of good food and conversation. Residents can decorate their own unfurnished apartments as they wish, but help is always there for daily tasks, chores, dry cleaning, and even hair appointments in the on-site beauty salon or at the barber, and since the grounds include things like a rear deck and indoor common spaces, there's always somewhere to sit with friends or take part in a group activity. Southridge is part of a larger network that includes other communities in the area, like Grand Traverse Highlander and Bay Ridge Assisted Living Center, so different levels of care and locations are available if a resident's needs change. They offer a mix of fitness centers, social spaces, and a wellness team on site, and with a 24/7 emergency call system, families can take comfort knowing someone's there to help at all times. Sometimes, respite stays are possible for short-term care, and specialized support is offered for people living with Alzheimer's or dementia. The caregiving team works with respect and kindness, making sure each person's dignity remains front and center.
