    Home-like community with excellent care

I'm very pleased with this community - it feels home-like, clean and bright, with private, spacious units and inviting common areas and well-kept gardens. The staff are warm, attentive and flexible, the food is excellent, and there are plenty of activities, outings and a la-carte care options. It's safe, dignified and comfortable; I'm satisfied and would recommend it.

    Summary of reviews

Overall impression York Gardens elicits a broadly positive impression for many residents and families, primarily driven by warm, attentive staff, an active social program, attractive grounds and common areas, and generally high-quality dining. The community conveys a home-like, well-kept atmosphere with bright living spaces and multiple social venues (bistro, theater, fireplace areas, patios) that support engagement and a sense of belonging.

Care and staff Staff behavior and culture are among the facility's strongest assets: reviewers commonly describe caregivers as caring, cheerful, and personally engaged. Memory-care staff also receive specific praise for supportive interactions and a nurturing approach. That said, there are recurring operational concerns: staffing levels appear to fluctuate, and those fluctuations are associated with lapses in service continuity and inconsistent adherence to care plans and medication/testing protocols. These clinical and scheduling inconsistencies have, in some instances, affected families' perceptions of reliability and suitability for residents with higher medical or behavioral needs.

Dining and services Dining quality is frequently highlighted as a positive feature; meals are described as appealing and the dining environment as welcoming. The community offers a la carte assistance options and three meals daily, and management flexibility around move-in/move-out has been noted positively. Counterbalancing those strengths are concerns about the facility's pricing and billing practices: separate food charges, complex billing, and significant rate increases have been raised as issues for families to review closely before committing.

Activities and lifestyle York Gardens offers a robust calendar of activities, including exercise classes, church services, fishing and baseball outings, and frequent van trips to local Twin Cities destinations. The activity program and transportation options are consistent selling points for prospective residents who value an active, social lifestyle.

Facilities and location The physical plant is generally well regarded: tasteful decor, well-kept gardens, sunny apartments, and inviting shared spaces contribute to a high-quality vibe. The location near parks and shopping is a convenience for residents and families. Limitations include a relatively small indoor exercise area, the absence of a pool, long hallways with few resting areas, and some family concerns about security processes; these trade-offs may matter for residents who prioritize on-site amenities or who need frequent indoor walking/exercise options.

Management and notable patterns Management receives mixed feedback: several accounts praise transparent communication and responsiveness when problems arise, while others highlight complex billing, abrupt rate increases, and occasional lapses in clinical follow-through. The pattern suggests that the community can provide excellent, person-centered care when adequately staffed and closely managed, but that operational variability — especially around staffing, clinical protocol adherence, and billing — can materially affect resident experience.

Recommendation for prospective families York Gardens is likely to be a strong match for seniors seeking an active, community-oriented setting with attentive staff, appealing dining, and attractive grounds. Prospective residents and families should tour during a meal or activity, ask specific questions about current staffing ratios and contingency plans for staffing shortfalls, review recent clinical-adherence practices (medication administration and testing protocols), and obtain clear, written billing and rate-increase policies. For residents with higher medical needs or advancing cognitive impairment, families should probe memory-care staffing, behavior-management strategies, and examples of continuity-of-care to ensure an appropriate fit.

    About York Gardens

York Gardens sits in the Edinborough neighborhood of Edina, MN, offering a selection of studio, one-bedroom, two-bedroom, and one-bedroom plus den apartments meant for seniors who value privacy and comfort, and you'll find both single and semi-private units here, so if you'd rather have your own space or share with someone, the option's up to you, and there are even enhanced care suites for those needing more help, like with complex health needs, and you'll see they provide care services as folks need them, so you can add or remove support as your needs change. The building has handicap access, a covered entrance, heated underground parking, and spots for residents, making things easier for getting in and out, and while the grounds aren't overflowing with features, folks mention the home-like feel, friendly community, walking paths, outdoor patios, and gardens that let people get outside when the weather's nice. There's a fitness center with wellness classes, an on-site salon and spa, help with haircuts and barber services, and even a small theater for movies, plus you've got laundry and housekeeping for linens and clothing, with fresh sheets and towels always on hand. Meals come from a professional chef, and they serve them in the dining room restaurant-style, with options including low or no sodium, and guests can join, or meals come as room service if that suits someone better. Staff cover the place round the clock, with a registered nurse on for 40 hours a week, and always on call, so you'll get help with things like medication management, diabetes care, non-ambulatory and incontinence support, memory care for those with Alzheimer's or dementia, and just general assisted living for everyday needs. You'll find a list of activity choices, some happening off-site, and the place connects by walkway to the 7500 York senior co-op, so it makes it easy for folks to stay part of a bigger community, and the building itself is considered fairly new, with attractive grounds, all those usual clean facilities, and a culture where folks mention everyone's friendly, helpful, and joyful, even if, like any place, it's not perfect either. Residents have access to Wi-Fi and high-speed internet, enjoy a steady round of community events, and can pick different service plans like Independence Plus, Assisted Living, Memory Care, or their Enhanced Care suites, so you'll find options for seniors wanting more independence or who need a lot of extra help, and, if someone ever just needs a break, respite care is available too. Legal protections cover housing and employment discrimination with respect to gender identity, orientation, and source of income, but there's no public info about pets, utility coverage, special features, or whether it's currently taking new residents since it's off-market, and while you can find comfort and help here for many needs, details on some building extras like pools or barbecues just aren't mentioned.
