    Caring staff, clean, excellent dining

I moved my mom here and I'm very pleased - the staff are caring, patient and remarkably responsive, especially during health changes and COVID. The facility is clean and well-run, with lots of activities and cultural outings, a nice fitness room, and genuinely good dining (the sandwiches tasted great). Great downtown/Uptown location with lovely city and park views, secure and comfortable - a bit pricier but worth it; I recommend it.

    Summary of reviews

The Kenwood presents as an urban, arts‑oriented senior living community with a strong emphasis on social engagement, cultural programming, and resident safety. Reviewers consistently highlight a welcoming atmosphere driven by long‑tenured, attentive staff and a concierge team that facilitates move‑ins, medication assistance, and day‑to‑day needs. Clinical care is described as personalized and responsive; families and residents cite kind nursing and aide support, coordinated communication with families, and availability of higher‑acuity services such as hospice when needed.

Dining and activities are central to community life. The facility offers regular meal service with terrace and dining‑room options, varied menus, and frequent social meal experiences; however, comments indicate meal quality can be inconsistent at times. Programming is broad and active — regular interest groups (gardening, games, current events), exercise classes, lectures, and frequent outings to cultural venues support an engaged resident population. Transportation resources (scheduled van/shuttle plus proximate bus lines) and an arts‑district location near parks, museums, and shops amplify off‑campus opportunities.

Apartments range from compact, efficient units to larger one‑ and multi‑bedroom floor plans with generous windows and city views. While many residents praise light, views, and well‑laid‑out larger units, others note smaller footprints and limited in‑unit kitchen amenities in some apartment types. The building has well‑maintained common areas, fitness rooms, and secure heated parking, although several comments point to aging finishes in parts of the facility and periodic need for selective updates.

Operationally, the Kenwood’s strengths are its experienced staff, strong activity programming, and integrated service offerings (housekeeping, dining, transportation, short‑term care). Areas for attention include apartment size variability, occasional housekeeping inconsistencies, elevator congestion tied to the building’s vertical layout, and uneven meal experiences. A number of families also mentioned transition or communication hiccups during move‑ins or care changes, though others praised clear, ongoing communication and pandemic‑era infection‑control practices.

Overall, The Kenwood is characterized by a warm, socially active community with robust staff support and convenient urban access. Prospective residents should weigh unit size and specific apartment amenities, the premium pricing noted by some, and potential timing issues around elevators and housekeeping when assessing fit. For those prioritizing cultural access, structured activities, and personalized staff attention, The Kenwood is frequently described as a strong option.

    About The Kenwood

The Kenwood is a retirement community in downtown Minneapolis at 825 Summit Ave, right in the Lowry Hill neighborhood, and you'll find one and two-bedroom apartments here, plus furnished places for short-term or respite stays, so maybe someone wants to stay a weekend or try out senior living for a while before making a big decision, and it's a high-rise building with panoramic skyline views out the windows, so folks can look out over the city while having breakfast, which comes with the rent to help people gather together and start the day, and there's also full restaurant-style dining with a big menu so there are plenty of choices, including selections for people needing low-sodium or vegetarian options, and laundry and housekeeping are handled by the staff, with linen service and dry cleaning available too.

There's both independent living for those who can do most things themselves and assisted living for folks who need more help, and support changes as a person's needs change, so care plans are flexible, and there's also enhanced care and memory care, plus short-term and respite options, so families get more choices depending on what someone needs right now, and the staff provide 24-hour support, help with medication, nursing care, therapy, palliative and hospice services if needed, and there are also transportation services for residents, whether that's for doctor visits or outings, and parking is mentioned for those who drive, though the facility hasn't said much about garage features.

People can have pets, so the place is pet-friendly, and you'll see activity rooms, outdoor patios and gardens, a sauna, fitness and recreation spaces including a fitness center, and a grand piano in the common area, and the Kenwood Library is right on site for reading and quiet time.

Staff organize over 200 social events and activities every month, which include live music, exercise classes, intergenerational games, group outings to theaters and sporting events, gardening, and even in-house religious services for those who want them, and there's a welcoming lobby and spaces for overnight guests.

Residents have legal protections against discrimination based on orientation, gender identity, and income, and management follows both federal and local laws about fair housing, employment, and public spaces, so everyone feels welcome and safe.

Units have full kitchens, and the community tries to make it easy for adults 55 and older to live more independently, with available support when needed, and the overall feeling is like a friendly hotel, with skyline views and lots of chances to join in, meet neighbors, or find quiet when needed, all while living in the heart of Minneapolis.
