    Bright well-run community, caring staff

I toured this bright, well-run community for my father and was very pleased - it doesn't feel like a nursing home. The staff are caring, friendly and competent, with nurses and security on site; residents are happy and social. Plenty of activities (cards, bingo, movie nights, outings), clean airy apartments with great views, and pleasant dining with good food - I would recommend it to families.

    Summary of reviews

St Joseph Tower Assisted Living presents a mixed but largely social and residential environment. The building offers one- and two-bedroom private apartments, many described as spacious, bright, and equipped with large walk-in closets. Common areas include a library, activities room, and multiple gathering spaces; residents and visitors frequently note pleasant views from upper floors and rooftop vantage points used for events. Security features such as locked entry and alarmed doors along with on-site nursing are prominent operational strengths.

Care and staffing are portrayed with both positive and negative elements. Many reviewers describe staff as friendly, caring, patient, and competent, and multiple comments reference direct nursing presence and attentive interactions. At the same time, there is a recurring theme of perceived staffing shortages and inconsistent responsiveness to resident needs. Prospective families should interpret this as variable day-to-day experience: some residents receive consistent, compassionate attention while others have experienced delays or uneven staff availability.

Dining and daily living services show a similar pattern of variability. The facility provides three daily meals, snacks, and a pleasant dining room; several accounts describe good or even excellent food. Other comments point to mediocre or inconsistent meal quality, indicating that dining satisfaction may fluctuate. Apartment amenities and furnishings also vary between units—some come with microwaves, refrigerators, and furniture while others require residents to provide more personal items—so standardization of in-unit amenities appears limited.

Activity programming and social life are clear strengths. The community hosts frequent activities including bingo, cards, movie nights, outings, and themed events. Reviewers commonly describe a lively, family-like social atmosphere where neighbors interact and residents appear engaged. The presence of a library, activity room, and organized outings supports an active daily schedule.

Facility infrastructure receives mixed feedback. Cleanliness and upkeep are praised in many accounts, with well-kept common areas and clean apartments noted. Conversely, some reviewers raise concerns about uneven maintenance and specific building-service issues; elevator reliability and accessibility in a 14-floor building were singled out as operational limitations that could affect mobility and convenience. These contrasting observations suggest maintenance quality may be uneven across the large facility.

Management and communication show notable divergence. While many families would recommend the community and express satisfaction with move-ins and tours, a small number of reviewers have made serious allegations—including concerns following a resident’s death, claims of discriminatory behavior, and disputes over resident removals—that raise questions about transparency and management response. These are significant enough to warrant direct inquiry during a visit: ask about incident procedures, grievance processes, and how management communicates with families.

In summary, St Joseph Tower offers many features attractive to prospective residents: private, spacious apartments in a high-rise with strong security, on-site nursing, an active activities program, and a social atmosphere. However, variability in staffing, maintenance, dining, apartment furnishings, and some serious allegations of misconduct mean prospective residents and families should conduct a thorough, in-person assessment. Recommended steps include touring multiple apartment types, observing meal service and an activity, asking about staffing ratios and elevator maintenance, and requesting written policies on incident reporting and family communication.

About St Joseph Tower Assisted Living

St Joseph Tower Assisted Living sits at 2205 S 10th St. in Omaha on the historic St. Joseph Hospital campus, in a high-rise building with wide sidewalks and neat lawns, and you'll see views of both the city and green panoramas from the windows. The facility accepts people age 55 or older and offers assisted living services on a campus that feels home-like, with rooms ranging from semi-private spaces to one-bedroom apartments running between 407 and 947 square feet. Residents find several floor plans and can pick what fits best for their needs. Staff help people with daily tasks, including bathing, dressing, and medication reminders, with 24-hour staff and nurses on duty, always awake, providing basic care, and handling emergencies.

The building has an emergency call system for each resident, and maintenance and housekeeping services are included. There are different fees-such as community, respite, buy-in, and fees based on care needs-as well as a second person fee for shared spaces. The dining is restaurant-style, with staff preparing three meals daily, reducing the need for residents to cook, and snacks like ice cream and other treats always available in a central spot, so folks can share snacks and chat. Residents enjoy activities like movie screenings on a big screen, exercise classes, live entertainment, the Red Hat Society, card clubs, Scrabble, volunteering, and domino games, and they've got outings to the zoo, casinos, ball games, and Omaha's old market. There's a calendar full of events, and the staff provide rides for medical appointments and shopping.

Devotional services take place offsite, and the library, common rooms, and indoor shared spaces make it easy for people to socialize or read quietly. The community offers fitness and recreation, provides outings and celebrations, and supports a social lifestyle with opportunities to join clubs or volunteer. There's a guest room for visitors. The campus has an easy-going, friendly atmosphere, and staff approach care with respect, wanting to help each resident feel comfortable and included. The assisted living service levels mean that people can stay through changing needs, with staff helping with assisted transfers for non-ambulatory residents, and with incontinence support for those who can manage it themselves. Diabetic care means staff assist with blood sugar checks but don't give insulin. The facility takes the Medicaid Waiver/PACE programs and provides respite and hospice care. Residents keep their independence as long as possible, and the setting encourages movement and interaction, but folks appreciate the quiet, too, and knowing staff are always there.
