    Excellent care, attentive staff, peace

I moved to Birch Hill and am very pleased - the care is excellent and the staff are amazingly attentive, professional, and friendly. The renovated apartments and beautiful common areas, outstanding dining, full fitness/classes and a wide range of activities make it easy to stay active and social. Management is responsive, the grounds are well kept, and I have real peace of mind here.

    Summary of reviews

RiverWoods Manchester is a campus-style senior living community that offers a full continuum of care — independent living, assisted living, memory care, and skilled nursing — alongside an on-site pharmacy and medical services. Many reviewers praise the facility’s renovated common areas, clean apartments, well-kept grounds, and planned cottage expansion; the atmosphere is frequently described as attractive and comfortable for residents who prioritize an upscale, campus-style setting.

Care and staff quality are commonly cited strengths. Nursing staff, LNAs, and many frontline employees are described as attentive, compassionate, and capable; families report supportive hands-on care and good coordination when residents’ needs change. Housekeeping and maintenance support are noted as dependable, and on-site clinical resources (nurse/physician access, pharmacy) add convenience for ongoing care needs. That said, accounts indicate variability in staff warmth and engagement across shifts and roles, and there are recurring concerns about staffing reductions that have affected activity offerings and service responsiveness.

Dining receives mixed but specific commentary. Several reviewers commend the dining program — balanced meals, outstanding dining experiences, and attentive servers — and list it as a highlight. Conversely, others raise facility-level concerns: the community’s dining model often includes only a limited number of included meals, with additional meals offered at extra cost; some residents found menu choices heavy on sugar, salt, or carbohydrates and reported difficulty accommodating certain dietary restrictions. Prospective residents should clarify meal-inclusion policies, deposit/meal-bank arrangements, and how dietary needs are accommodated.

Activity and wellness programming is a visible strength for many residents: offerings range from gym classes and fitness programs to arts, lectures, tap dance, watercolor, and lifelong-learning partnerships. These programs support active, socially engaged lifestyles for many who live there. However, several accounts describe activity programming as uneven in energy or variety for longer-term residents and note that some residents do not feel actively encouraged to participate. Staffing changes and transitions have at times reduced the perceived vibrancy of programming.

Operations and management present a mixed picture. The community has invested in renovations and new units, and some families praise responsive management and regular communication. At the same time, a number of concerns center on high cost of living (with annual increases), opaque financial practices such as entrance deposits and meal-bank policies, and variable responsiveness from administrators. Location and amenities are generally positive but have trade-offs: the setting is quieter and somewhat remote, with limited immediate outdoor areas compared with more centrally located options.

Overall, RiverWoods Manchester appears well suited to financially comfortable seniors seeking an attractive, campus-style community with on-site medical/pharmacy services, active programming, and a full care continuum. Those considering a move should verify contractual terms (entrance deposits, rent escalation, included meals), observe dining and activity sessions in person, and meet current management and frontline staff to assess fit and consistency of services over time.

    About RiverWoods Manchester

RiverWoods Manchester is a non-profit senior community sitting on 29 wooded acres in a quiet country setting, yet it's close to both downtown Manchester and Concord, and, being the only Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC) in the greater Manchester area, it gives folks a range of care under one roof, which is handy because the place covers Independent Living, Assisted Living, Memory Support, and Enhanced Assisted Living (Nursing), each tailored depending on what a resident needs at any given time, and the grounds include walking paths, gardens, and cottages along with one- and two-bedroom apartments that come in sizes from 624 to 1,656 square feet, making it possible to pick what works best for each person's space needs or budget, especially with the Flex Contract option that helps residents only pay for the care they require, all while there's guaranteed access to healthcare through a Life Plan Community setup which eases some future worries.

The community has been nicely renovated and expanded over the years and welcomes adults 62 or older who want a modern, active lifestyle, offering things like a new fitness center for chair yoga and Tai Chi, an arts room, music and art programs, woodworking in a full woodshop, and gardening in set-aside gardens, plus there's an ever-changing social calendar with events, educational opportunities, tap dancing, group outings, and movie nights, and those who like to socialize will find a small nook for coffee, community-sponsored activities, and various resident-run clubs, giving everyone a shot at friendship and hobbies without having to go far.

Pet lovers can bring their pets, and the homes are accessible for anyone needing extra support, with help available for things like bathing, dressing, medication, and transfers, because nurses and nursing assistants are on duty 24 hours a day, and the care team crafts custom plans so residents get just the right amount of help, plus Memory Support services have their own staff focused on privacy and dignity for people with Alzheimer's or dementia while Enhanced Assisted Living (Nursing) is there for anyone who develops more complex health needs, providing all care in private rooms, and the community's won awards like Best of Senior Living and All-Star Award for how well they support residents.

Meals are prepared by chefs and offer a flexible meal points program, with food served in a furnished dining room where menus address allergies and special diets like diabetes, and if someone needs housecleaning, laundry, or basic maintenance, those are all handled, as well as transportation to appointments or errands. There's an emergency alert system, salon, parking, storage, and both furnished and unfurnished options for living spaces, with VA benefits, including Aid and Attendance, to help pay for care if you're a qualified veteran or spouse.

Residents can enjoy inside and outside maintenance handled by staff, safe walking paths for strolls, handicap accessibility, move-in coordination, and parking for drivers, while those who like independent living with less fuss can find no-frills senior apartments or, if needed, share neighborhood homes with a live-in caregiver for day-to-day help. RiverWoods Manchester, as part of the RiverWoods Group, stays one of the largest CCRC families in New England and stands out as a verified choice for people who want both independence and healthcare down the road without fuss, relying on a range of services meant for comfort, safety, and an active, friendly atmosphere.
