Newton's Guest Home is a 20-bed residential care home at 19 Spruce Run Rd in Glen Gardner, New Jersey, in the countryside of Hunterdon County near Clinton, Flemington, Hackettstown, and Phillipsburg. The Newton family has owned and operated it since 1973, when Judith Newton opened the home; her daughter Mary Newton runs it today with the help of several generations of the family. Its small size is the point — the home serves older adults who need help managing daily life, including those with mobility issues and memory impairments, and some residents have lived there for more than twenty years.
Care is built around each resident. A registered nurse works with each resident's own physician on an individual care plan, visits weekly, and is on call around the clock for questions and emergencies. Staff help with bathing, hygiene, and dressing, monitor medications from a locked cabinet and handle prescription refills, and assist with blood sugar monitoring. Rooms come fully furnished down to the linens, though residents are welcome to bring their own furniture and belongings, and housekeeping and laundry are handled by the home. Three home-cooked meals a day plus snacks are prepared around each resident's tastes and dietary needs, with nutrition counseling from the staff and nurse. Days include bingo, table games, arts and crafts, movies, group discussions, bird watching, and birthday and holiday parties, and students from a nearby college program visit for one-on-one time and group activities.
Rates are all-inclusive with no entrance fees or hidden charges, and vary with each resident's care needs: semi-private rooms start at $3,200 a month, private rooms at $4,000, and private rooms with a private bathroom at $4,500. Staff also help with scheduling medical appointments and transportation, filling out insurance and benefits paperwork, and arranging religious services. The home is approved to accept the VA Aid and Attendance benefit and helps veterans apply for it at no charge. Medicare generally does not cover this level of care, though some private plans may. The home is smoke-free indoors with designated outdoor smoking areas, private transportation is available for a small fee alongside Hunterdon County's five-day-a-week public service, and pets are considered case by case.
