    Attentive staff and excellent rehab

My father has been very happy here since the new ownership - the staff are attentive, caring, and kind, and the rehab therapy is excellent. Residents enjoy engaging activities, form friendships, visiting is flexible, improvements are ongoing, and I highly recommend this place.

    Summary of reviews

Reviews for this facility present a mixed picture. Many families and residents highlight genuinely positive elements — notably compassionate caregiving from specific staff members, a range of social activities (arts and crafts, bingo, themed nights) and flexible visiting policies that support family involvement. Several reviewers described their relatives forming friendships and enjoying activity-based engagement, and some families recommend the facility for its supportive interpersonal environment.

At the same time, there are recurring operational concerns. Cleanliness and odor issues in shared spaces are mentioned repeatedly alongside delays in attending to personal-care needs; both point to weaknesses in routine incontinence care and timely assistance. A few reviewers raised more serious concerns about how some residents are handled during transfers or personal care, indicating inconsistent staff conduct and potential gaps in training or supervision. Staffing shortages and uneven coverage — particularly during evenings — correlate with reports of slow response times and unstaffed desks.

Facility maintenance and safety are additional areas of concern. Multiple accounts reference an aging, underfunded physical plant: dated lobby and exterior appearance, mold or similar moisture-related problems in places, and environmental-safety issues such as loose railings and worn furniture edges. Those conditions, together with reports of limited rehab assessments, suggest the facility may not be well equipped for higher-intensity rehabilitation needs.

Dining and activities show variability. The activity program is a clear strength for social engagement, but the activity space is described as small and audiovisual capacity limited for group viewing. Dining receives mixed comments: some find options acceptable, while others report limited variety and inconsistent preparation quality. Communication and management practices are additional operational weaknesses — families describe difficulty reaching staff by phone, full voicemail boxes, and a perceived lack of organizational responsiveness. Several reviewers also framed these problems as symptoms of limited capital investment and operational instability, including name/ownership changes over recent years.

Taken together, the pattern is one of notable interpersonal strengths amid systemic operational shortcomings. Prospective residents and families who prioritize social activities and have positive experiences with individual staff members may find the environment suitable. Those who require reliable, timely personal-care assistance, structured rehabilitation services, or have heightened concerns about cleanliness and environmental safety should conduct careful, in-person assessments: ask about staffing ratios by shift, incontinence-care protocols, recent maintenance and infection-control documentation, rehab assessment availability, and current family engagement expectations before making a placement decision.

About NorthTowns Care Center Tonawanda New York

NorthTowns Care Center sits in Tonawanda, New York, and takes care of older adults who need different kinds of help as they age, and you'll find that the center belongs to a bigger network with connections to groups like Centers Healthcare, Elderwood Group, and the McGuire Group, which means you see a range of services, with both for-profit and not-for-profit hands involved, and NorthTowns offers skilled nursing day and night, memory care for people with Alzheimer's or dementia, short-term rehabilitation, and assisted living with help for daily needs like bathing, dressing, and taking medicine, along with meal services and personal care, and when you walk around, you notice amenities made for seniors-the rooms are furnished and air-conditioned, some have kitchenettes and private bathrooms, Wi-Fi and cable TV run through the building, and you get spaces to gather like a beauty salon, a dining room with restaurant-style service and meals for special diets, a fitness room, small library, computer area, gardens, and a safe outdoor area, plus there are options for community rides and trips.

You see staff working all through the day, and that includes Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, Certified Nurse Assistants, therapists, and many others like social workers, maintenance, and dietary staff, all unionized through 1199SEIU, and staff have been speaking up, taking part in protests to call for better conditions, more hands on the floor, and fair wages, trying to get management to improve things like health insurance and pensions because everyone knows that better staffing means better care. NorthTowns Care Center has had reports of lower-than-average staffing levels compared to state and national numbers, so people in the community and union have made that a focus. The center also offers respite care so family caregivers can get a break when they need it, and there are programs and activities built for memory care, like memory games or special routines, with a safe and secure space for residents who need extra supervision. The place tries to give a comfortable, home-like setting, with staff trained to treat each resident with dignity and respect, and it's easy to tour if you want, either in person or virtual, and while NorthTowns has faced tough contract talks, legal actions about staffing, and related company dealings, it keeps serving seniors with options for assisted living, memory care, long-term care, and skilled nursing, all in one community where many hope to age in place.
