    Compassionate, attentive, excellent rehab care

I had a very positive stay - compassionate, dedicated staff who knew me by name, attentive nurses/CNAs, and an excellent PT/OT rehab team that helped me regain mobility and prepare for home. Doctors and NP were on-site, management was accessible, and the facility was clean and felt family-like. Overall excellent, with only minor areas for improvement; I would recommend this skilled nursing facility.

    Summary of reviews

Overall impression: Reviews present a mixed picture. Several comments emphasize high-quality, compassionate clinical care and a capable rehabilitation team, while other comments raise operational concerns around safety, cleanliness, activities, and billing. The positive feedback focuses on direct patient care and therapy; the negative feedback centers on facility processes and family-facing communications.

Care and staff: Multiple reviewers praised nursing and therapy staff for being compassionate, skilled, and attentive, and noted good patient-centered care and knowledgeable rehabilitation planning. At the same time, there are concerns about transfer and mobility safety: at least one account described a serious fall event, which suggests potential gaps in transfer protocols, supervision, or wheelchair-assist procedures that families should clarify during a tour. There are also comments implying occasional delays or tone concerns in staffโ€“family communication.

Dining and activities: Activity programming receives explicit criticism in the reviews; one reviewer characterized programs as inadequate. There is little specific information about dining quality or meal service in the available summaries, so no clear pattern emerges for food and menus. Prospective residents and families may want to ask management for a current activities calendar and meal sample or menu during the evaluation process.

Facilities and sanitation: Some reviewers raised sanitation and odor concerns in parts of the facility. These comments indicate inconsistent environmental maintenance in certain areas rather than uniformly positive cleanliness. Prospective visitors should view patient rooms and common areas in person and ask about housekeeping schedules and pest-control practices.

Management, billing, and ancillary services: A notable and recurring theme is financial and administrative frustration. Reviewers describe opaque billing practices, unexpected patient balances for vision, dental, and ambulance services, and limited coordination with insurance networks that can result in substantial out-of-pocket charges. One reviewer indicated difficulty obtaining a contact for formal complaint resolution or for reaching the facility administrator. These patterns point to a need for clearer upfront financial counseling, transparent charge explanations, and more accessible complaint-resolution channels.

Notable patterns and guidance: The facility appears to provide strong frontline clinical and rehabilitation care, but operational weaknessesโ€”particularly in activity programming, billing transparency, insurance coordination, environmental maintenance, and transfer-safety processesโ€”are recurrent themes. Families considering this facility should observe staff interactions, inquire specifically about fall-prevention and transfer protocols, request detailed explanations of likely out-of-pocket costs for common ancillary services, and verify how to escalate concerns to administration. Obtaining written policies on billing, activities, and incident response may help clarify these areas before admission.

    About UHC-Oxford

Universal Health Care - Oxford is a large, for-profit nursing facility located in Oxford, North Carolina, with a capacity for 160 residents. The facility offers both short-term rehabilitation and long-term care services for individuals requiring daily medical attention or assistance after a hospital stay. Universal Health Care - Oxford participates in both Medicare and Medicaid programs, providing financial accessibility for eligible residents who need nursing care.

Short-term rehabilitation at Universal Health Care - Oxford is structured to assist patients recovering from hospitalizations, such as after a stroke, heart attack, infection, or accidental injury. Residents in this program have access to nearly 3 hours of nurse staffing per day, a figure that reflects the comprehensive care provided. Approximately 30.4% of residents who participated in the short-term rehabilitation program were able to return to their homes after their discharge. During rehabilitation stays, the rate of emergency room visits stood at 14.5%, while 7.1% of short-term stays resulted in hospitalizations due to serious infections. The facility recorded no falls with major injuries for rehabilitation residents, indicating attention to safety protocols during recovery.

Long-term care services at Universal Health Care - Oxford meet the needs of individuals who require ongoing medical and daily assistance, such as help with medication administration, dressing, eating, and mobility. For long-term residents, the ability to maintain self-care is supported, with 79.5% of residents able to move, eat, use the bathroom, and perform other common activities without help. The flu vaccination rate among residents was 89.8%, highlighting the facilityโ€™s proactive approach to preventive health. Nurse staffing levels for long-term care also average at just under 3 hours per resident per day, though the consistency of staffing between weekdays and weekends has been noted as an area for further improvement.

Universal Health Care - Oxford undergoes routine health, fire, and safety inspections as part of its commitment to resident well-being. The facility has addressed issues in past inspections, such as ensuring accurate resident assessments, implementing comprehensive care plans, and maintaining proper procedures for the storage and labeling of drugs and biologicals. Importantly, the home has not been subject to fines or payment denials in the past three years, suggesting a proactive approach to rectifying identified concerns.

For individuals and families seeking senior living arrangements, Universal Health Care - Oxford offers a combination of medical support and community living with services tailored to both short-term recovery and extended residency. Its participation in both major public insurance programs ensures care is accessible to those who meet enrollment criteria, which can greatly ease the process of transitioning to a nursing home environment. While Universal Health Care - Oxford is not part of a continuing care retirement community and does not offer an on-site hospital, it remains a notable option for both rehabilitation and long-term care services in the region.
