    Attentive staff, homey spotless community

I chose this community for my mom and am very pleased. The staff are loving, attentive and professional, and management is supportive and responsive. The building feels homey and spotless with sunlit common areas, excellent home-cooked meals, a busy activities calendar and thoughtful events - doctor house calls and pet-friendly policies were a big plus. They treated my mom and our family with respect; I would recommend them.

    Summary of reviews

Hearth & Home Senior Assisted Living at Vandalia receives consistently strong marks for its people‑focused environment and home‑style design. Many families highlight compassionate, attentive direct‑care staff, a welcoming “town‑style” layout with sunlit common areas, spacious private rooms with private baths, and well‑kept outdoor spaces including courtyards and a tribute garden. The facility’s smaller scale and shared living/dining arrangement are frequently cited as contributors to a homelike atmosphere and resident socialization. Reviewers commonly praise the activities program — often led by a highly rated activities director — with a varied calendar of daily and monthly events, outings, and special celebrations that families find meaningful. Several reviewers also appreciated home‑cooked meals and all‑inclusive pricing structures and noted helpful transition assistance and administrative staff who facilitate move‑ins.

Care quality is mixed in the commentary. Positive accounts describe attentive personal care, good clinical oversight from an on‑site nurse administrator, and dignity‑preserving, family‑oriented approaches. However, a substantial pattern of operational concerns appears as well: inconsistent staffing levels, frequent staff turnover, and reliance on agency nurses contribute to variable continuity of care. Several comments indicate gaps in medication‑administration documentation and tracking, and some families described inconsistent bathing/housekeeping schedules. These operational weaknesses seem to affect clinical consistency and family confidence in certain cases.

Memory‑care and higher‑acuity considerations are a common dividing line in the reviews. The facility lacks a clearly separated, secure memory‑care unit, and reviewers raised concerns about the facility’s ability to meet advanced dementia needs, wandering risk mitigation, and secure lockdown measures. Relatedly, some reviewers noted the facility does not accept Medicaid and has restrictive transfer or payment policies; this can necessitate relocation if care needs escalate. A number of reviewers also described limitations in equipment and staffing resources needed for high‑acuity transfers (for example, limited lift equipment availability), indicating Hearth & Home is often better suited to lower‑to‑moderate acuity residents who can be supported in a small, active community.

Food and housekeeping receive both praise and criticism. Many families find meals appealing and home‑style, while others cite inconsistent food quality, unmet promises regarding meal alternatives, and variability in room housekeeping frequency. Cleanliness of common areas is frequently highlighted as excellent, but there are intermittent sanitation and pest‑control concerns reported in private areas.

Management and communication present a mixed picture. Several reviewers commend the executive and administrative team for supportive transition work, responsiveness, and visible leadership. Conversely, some families describe management communication shortfalls, contested billing or transfer policies, and adversarial interactions; staffing morale and compensation are also mentioned as underlying contributors to turnover. There are also a few serious, individual allegations such as missing personal belongings and concerns following a resident’s death; these appear as isolated but important issues for families to explore directly with leadership.

Overall, Hearth & Home appears to offer a warm, activity‑rich, and well‑maintained assisted‑living option that is particularly well suited to residents who value social programming, a homelike layout, and attentive direct caregivers. Prospective residents with advanced medical or memory‑care needs should carefully evaluate clinical resources, 24‑hour nursing availability, secure memory‑care provisions, equipment availability, staffing continuity, and payment/transfer policies before selecting the community. Recommended pre‑move questions include clarifying typical staffing ratios, agency nurse use, medication‑tracking procedures, memory‑care protocols and secure areas, pest‑control practices, housekeeping schedules, and financial/Medicaid policies.

About Hearth & Home Senior Assisted Living at Vandalia

Hearth & Home Senior Assisted Living at Vandalia sits on Great Hill Road in Dayton, Ohio, and gives a real home-like feeling right when you come up the walk, with a friendly welcome and sometimes laughter from the courtyard or the cozy lounge where people enjoy a warm fire. The staff help with daily needs like bathing, dressing, medication, and moving around, and folks who use wheelchairs or need more help also find support here. The community handles housework, laundry, and even dry cleaning for residents, while meals are served daily and made by a chef, with choices for allergies and diabetes. Every apartment has a private bathroom, cable TV, a kitchenette, telephone, air conditioning, Wi-Fi, and the rooms come furnished, but everyone's encouraged to make their space feel like their own with pictures and keepsakes. Safety features include a 24-hour emergency call system in each unit and staff around all night and day.

Hearth & Home supports people living with mild cognitive impairment or dementia, offering secured and supervised memory care and special programs to reduce confusion and stop wandering, and there's a dementia waiver program too. Residents get scheduled rides to places like the senior center, shops, restaurants, and churches, with some still able to drive and others using the community's transportation. There are plenty of amenities with indoor and outdoor common areas, walking paths, a lush garden, movie theater, wellness and fitness rooms, activity and arts rooms, and a community courtyard. Activities can be as lively as Cocktail Hour, music programs, and movie nights or as calm as gardening, arts and crafts, and chatting with friends or visiting pets, since pets are welcome here. The staff also set up devotional services, daily events, outings, move-in help, and a concierge to answer residents' needs.

Some residents take part in outings and community events, others join family support services or church groups, and a lot just enjoy routines and the warmth of the space. For folks who need short-term stays, there's respite care and day care, plus hospice services for end-of-life needs. Hearth & Home keeps things simple and caring, with meals, activities, and services aimed at helping seniors stay active and feel at home, whether they live here full-time or for a short period. The atmosphere is friendly, not fancy, but it's the kind of place where neighbors know each other and staff aim to respect each person's privacy and dignity, which makes it easy to feel comfortable.
