    Kind attentive staff, clean facility

I placed my father here for 30 days and am very happy with the experience. The staff are kind, caring and attentive - excellent nursing and resident assistants - and the facility feels clean and home-like with healthy meals (available on request) and engaging activities. He's well taken care of and I'd recommend this to other families.

    Summary of reviews

The reviews present a mixed picture of Hearth & Home at Urbana. Many families praise the interpersonal side of care: nursing staff, resident assistants, and frontline caregivers are frequently described as kind, attentive and compassionate. Several accounts highlight a warm, home-like atmosphere with a family-like culture among staff, an engaging activities program, and a facility that feels comfortable for residents. Short-term and respite stays received positive mention, and multiple reviewers recommended the community to other families.

Care and staffing are areas of both strength and concern. Positive comments focus on caring, helpful caregivers and attentive nursing personnel. At the same time, reviewers describe operational challenges that point to inconsistent staffingโ€”high turnover and variability across shiftsโ€”and isolated reports of problematic staff conduct or unprofessional interactions that affected resident comfort. Prospective residents should inquire about current staffing ratios, shift continuity, and staff training and supervision practices.

Dining feedback is polarized. Several reviewers praised the meals, flexibility (meals on request), and accommodating dining staff, while other reviewers characterized food quality as poor. This suggests variability in meal preparation or service consistency rather than a uniform standard. Reviewers also described occasional kitchen disruptions being visible to residents, which raises questions about service continuity and dining-room management.

Activities and communal life are generally viewed positively: organized programming and a friendly social environment were noted, and many reviewers reported that residents appeared happy and well cared for during activities. Facility cleanliness comments are mixed; common areas were described as clean by some reviewers, but others reported disappointing room-level housekeeping and preparation. These observations indicate variability in housekeeping standards between common spaces and private rooms.

Management and administrative issues emerged as a recurring theme. Several reviewers expressed concerns about leadership turnover and a perception that recent management priorities emphasize appearance or marketing over clinical or caregiving priorities. There are also mentions of high-pressure sales tactics during admissions. Financial considerations varied: some families reported good value, while others considered pricing high and noted that Medicaid was not a fit for their situation.

Overall, Hearth & Home at Urbana appears to offer genuine strengths in day-to-day caregiving, social programming, and a homelike environment, but prospective residents and families should investigate operational consistency. Recommended steps before deciding include touring at different times of day, sampling a meal, meeting nursing and activities staff, reviewing current staffing patterns and turnover history, clarifying admission and payment policies (including Medicaid compatibility), and asking about recent management changes and quality-improvement efforts.

About Hearth & Home at Urbana

Hearth & Home At Urbana sits at 1579 E State Route 29 in Urbana, Ohio, right in a spot that's easy to find with nearby hospitals and pharmacies, which makes it nice for visits and handling health needs, and when you walk in the front door there's a warm feeling thanks to friendly staff and residents, a crackling fire, and rooms already furnished for comfort. The community gives seniors a choice between independent living, assisted living, and specialized memory care for those with Alzheimer's or dementia, offering help with things like bathing, dressing, mobility, transfers, and medication management anytime of day or night, and for folks needing a break or after a hospital stay, they have a respite program. The staff includes multilingual caregivers who speak English, and someone's always close by with a 24-hour call system in each room to keep residents safe.

There are paved walking paths outside and common rooms indoors where you can read, join Bible study on Wednesdays, have worship on Sundays with local churchgoers, or try out the "Seniorcise" class. The dining room serves up a farmer-style breakfast cooked to order, along with all-day restaurant dining that considers special diets, allergies, diabetes, or even just a smaller appetite with fruit and oatmeal if you like. Every week, the community arranges outings for lunch around town or other local trips, and an activities director keeps the calendar full with movie nights, crafts in the arts room, daily devotions, community and resident-led activities, and plenty of chances for conversation or quiet time. There's a beauty salon, a cozy library, an emergency alert system, and housekeeping and laundry if you need it. Residents have support with privacy and dignity, and families visiting will see that the place works to keep life lively but supported, with activities meant to spark both body and mind.

For those with dementia, there's a supervised, secure memory care section made to feel safe-doors and layouts help prevent wandering and reduce confusion, while staff encourage engagement and help with daily needs. There's medication help, mobility support, and care for folks who aren't able to walk, with everything planned to make moving in and daily life as smooth as possible. Hearth & Home At Urbana lists itself as a senior living alternative to a nursing home, with a good mix of homey comforts, help when needed, a calendar that gets people together, and staff who work to treat everyone with respect. There's a website with more information for anyone who wants to look up the details, and visitors are always welcome to join the community for an activity or a meal.
