Mercy McAuley Center sits in Urbana, Ohio, and is attached to Mercy Memorial Hospital, which makes it easy for residents to get medical help right away when they need it, and it's known as the first nursing home in Champaign County built for Alzheimer's and dementia care, so people who need specialized memory care can find support here, and you'll notice the building is fully sprinklered for fire safety, something a lot of folks value for peace of mind. Ms. Jennifer Pearson, the Administrator, oversees daily operations, and the facility is run by a church-related non-profit group that owns several other nursing homes, which means you've got a sense of community and experienced management behind the scenes, and while the Center isn't a continuing care retirement community, it does offer a range of services, like independent living, assisted living, nursing home placements, and special support for seniors with memory problems, plus there are programs for long-term care planning, family caregiving, and guidance for long-term care insurance, so families get information to help them make choices. Staff focus on resident safety, so you'll hear about the routine to prevent pressure sores, make sure medicine is handled safely, and always keep resident rights front and center, and when changes happen-like an injury or a shift in health-there's a protocol to quickly let families, doctors, and the residents themselves know what's going on. The staff's hours suggest a hands-on approach, with registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, and certified nursing assistants on hand each day, and vaccination rates are high, with nearly everyone getting shots for flu and pneumonia to prevent outbreaks. Residents can join the resident council or family council, and there's an Activities Department that plans engagement events, all of which helps people stay active and connected, and in terms of care, the Center can handle skilled, intermediate, and rehabilitation needs, along with the kind of care people with Alzheimer's or dementia need, and while there aren't details about all the amenities, the focus stays on health, safety, and making sure everyone gets the level of attention they require. There's a comfortable, home-like setting, and the occupancy rate shows most of the 129 certified beds have residents, meaning a lot of people seem to trust the care. The Center follows Medicare and Medicaid rules, so more folks can access services, and even though it's received an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau, it isn't officially accredited, and health inspections list areas like pharmacy services, quality of care, and resident rights as things to improve on, which is typical in this kind of care setting where staff always aim to adjust and do better as needs change. Overall, Mercy McAuley Center offers a mix of senior care options with a focus on health, safety, and community, and while it doesn't offer flashy extras or detailed lists of services, the basics of good nursing home and memory care, as well as support for families, are what guide its daily work.
Beautiful facility with one concern
I toured the facility and was impressed: absolutely beautiful, nicely landscaped, very clean, friendly and wonderful staff who put residents first, good food, lots of activities, and a safe, well-cared-for Alzheimer's wing. My only concern was the head nurse - I noticed some lapses in care quality despite the generally caring team.
