    Compassionate staff, clean, great rehab

I'm very satisfied with Westhaven - compassionate, professional CNAs and nurses, a clean odor-free facility, engaging activities (piano, gardening, games), excellent OT/PT rehab and therapy visits, and above-average food. Staff consistently went out of their way so my loved one feels safe, comfortable and at home; I'd recommend it after a hospital stay.

    Summary of reviews

Westhaven Nursing Home presents a mixed but instructive profile for prospective residents and families. Many reviewers praise the facility for its strong therapy services and handsโ€‘on caregiving: physical and occupational therapy staff receive consistent positive remarks, and CNAs are frequently described as compassionate, attentive, and willing to go beyond basic duties. The environment is commonly characterized as bright and cheery, with private-room options, a large dining/cafeteria area, an outdoor courtyard and walking path, and a robust activities program that includes music, games, crafts, and animal therapy. Housekeeping and food service earn favorable comments from numerous families, with the kitchen described as above average and the facility noted to be generally clean and odorโ€‘free in many areas.

Staff-level interactions form a clear strength in many accounts. Nursing staff, aides, and therapists are repeatedly identified as friendly, encouraging, and knowledgeable; several families highlighted supportive end-of-life care and staff who help ease grieving. The activities director and therapy teams are singled out for engaging programming that supports socialization and rehabilitation. Operational positives include straightforward visitor check-in, available refreshments, and policies that permit family participation in meals.

However, the reviews also surface operational concerns that should be weighed carefully. Multiple items point to gaps in safe transfer and lifting practices, inconsistent use of safety devices (for example wheelchair securement), and instances suggesting variability in training or technique among aides. Medication-administration controls and emergency recognition also show inconsistency: there are accounts indicating delayed recognition of acute conditions (for example hypoglycemia) and delays in emergency response, which together suggest a need for stronger clinical protocols and staff continuing education. Relatedly, some reviewers note inconsistent supervision and coverage patterns that can affect responsiveness to resident needs.

Administrative and facility-level issues appear alongside the clinical concerns. Several families expressed frustration with managementโ€™s handling of complaints, grievance procedures, and decisions around transfers or evictions; there are even allegations concerning due-process in transfers that some families found distressing. The buildingโ€™s age is reflected in intermittent heating and cooling problems and other infrastructure limitations. While many areas are described as clean, there are isolated sanitation and housekeeping concerns noted by others. Meal timing variability and occasional lunch delays were reported as inconsistent service issues. Finally, workforce pressures โ€” including concerns about CNA pay โ€” were mentioned and may contribute to turnover and variability in care consistency.

In summary, Westhaven offers clear strengths in rehabilitation services, an active social program, and a number of caring frontโ€‘line staff members who create a welcoming environment for many residents. At the same time, there are recurrent operational themes โ€” safety in transfers and lifts, medicationโ€‘administration and emergency recognition, supervisory coverage, and administrative grievance processes โ€” that prospective families should investigate further. Recommended pre-admission steps include touring the facility during activity hours, asking about transfer-safety protocols and staff training frequency, reviewing medication- and emergency-response policies, clarifying dementia-care and transfer procedures, and discussing staffing ratios and retention initiatives with administration.
