    Friendly staff, great food, views

I moved into the cottage three weeks ago and already love it. The staff are genuinely caring - April Day went above and beyond to make me comfortable, Jeff in maintenance is superb, and on-site managers know us by name. The creative chef serves delicious daily meals (fresh bread, great buffets and charcuterie), there are nonstop activities and outings, and friendly residents make it feel like family. My spacious unit with a long balcony and Mt. Hood view, beautiful grounds, reliable transportation and post-surgery support have made this a very positive move.

    Summary of reviews

Overall impression: Somerset Lodge is frequently described as a warm, social independent-living community with a consistently praised care culture. Reviewers emphasize personable, resident-focused staff and live-in management presence, which many families and residents identify as a primary strength. The community is noted for its active programming, regular transportation, and scenic campus with views of Mount Hood.

Care and staff: Families and residents commonly describe attentive, compassionate staff and on-site managers who know residents by name and respond to individual needs. Staff members and maintenance personnel are repeatedly commended for going above and beyond, including support after surgery and hands-on assistance during moves. That said, reviews also reflect periods of managerial and kitchen turnover; this has been associated with variability in service continuity and occasional communication gaps with families about clinical incidents.

Dining: Dining is a focal point of community life. Many reviewers praise a creative chef, fresh-baked daily offerings, plentiful dessert options (ice cream, cookies, coffee), and lively dining-room atmosphere that supports socialization. However, meal quality and execution are described as inconsistent at times, and staff turnover in the kitchen has been cited as a driver of that variability. The facility’s affiliation also brings specific dietary limitations that reduce menu variety for residents who prefer pork or shellfish.

Activities and social life: The activity program is a clear strength. Somerset Lodge offers daily activities, exercise classes, movies, games, and frequent outings for breakfast, lunch, and trips to local attractions. Residents report improved companionship, reduced loneliness, and an active social calendar that many find central to their satisfaction.

Facilities and logistics: The property is noted for cleanliness, attractive grounds, and a mix of unit sizes—from compact studios to large one-bedroom units and cottages with generous closets and balconies. Safety features such as sprinklers and alarm systems and weekly housekeeping are standard. Operational friction points include a single central elevator that can create wait times during meal periods and a transportation bus that lacks full handicap access. Some parts of the building are older and could benefit from updates.

Management and notable patterns: On-site, live-in management is repeatedly cited as a stabilizing, positive element. Positive staff–resident relationships and an ethos of resident-centered care recur across reviews. Counterbalancing this are recurring comments about leadership and kitchen turnover, which reviewers link to intermittent declines in food quality and service consistency. Cost perceptions vary: many view the community as competitively priced or cost-effective relative to alternatives, while others express concern about affordability.

Decision considerations: Prospective residents and families should weigh the strong social program, caring staff, and attractive location against operational limitations such as dining variability, accessibility of transportation, and unit-size differences. For individuals prioritizing an engaged, communal independent-living setting with active staff involvement, Somerset Lodge appears well suited; those for whom consistent culinary service, larger studio layouts, or full handicap-accessible transport are primary needs should assess those areas specifically during a tour.

About Somerset Lodge Gracious Retirement Living

Somerset Lodge Gracious Retirement Living in Gladstone, Oregon, offers independent living for seniors who want to stay active while letting go of chores like housekeeping, cooking, and driving. The community has apartments in more than 20 different layouts, with studios, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom options, plus roomy cottages for those who want extra space, and these apartments have private thermostats, basic cable TV, large bathrooms, emergency pull cords, and fire protection systems included, which is good for peace of mind. The buildings are three stories tall and the whole place feels bright and welcoming, and you'll often see people gathering in the library, the craft room, the salon, the TV lounge, or out in one of the scenic outdoor areas nearby, since the property's surrounded by parks and rivers that offer a nice change of scenery for walks or just some fresh air.

Residents get three meals a day, cooked from scratch by an Executive Chef and team, and can grab snacks and drinks from an all-day bar whenever they want. Housekeeping, linen service, home maintenance, and community-wide transportation all come with the monthly rent, and that also covers utilities like electricity, water, gas, and sewer. The schedule's always full, with exercise classes, creative arts, book clubs, cooking demonstrations, garden groups, planned outings, travel opportunities, and a wide variety of events, all put together by an activity director who tries to match what people actually enjoy doing. The focus stays pretty strongly on social connections and daily living rather than tasks or chores, which makes it easier for residents to relax, learn new things, and meet other people.

A live-in management team is on-site 24/7 for any issues, questions, or if help is needed in an emergency, and every apartment has an emergency pull cord that connects straight to management, so folks don't have to worry so much about what happens if something goes wrong during the night. There's also a partnership with Best Buy Health™ that supplies the Lively Mobile2 medical alert device for extra safety if someone wants it. Families who want more support can hire third-party caregivers for things like medication reminders, and residents only pay for those extra services if they use them. The community has resources and guidance for long-term care, family caregiving, and insurance, and offers options for different care needs, aiming to make life a bit easier for seniors and their families.

People living here often say the environment feels caring and community-driven, and activities let everyone enjoy hobbies, learn new skills, or just sit with a puzzle or a cup of coffee and chat. The place gets high marks in reviews, with a customer rating of 4.9 out of 5 from 15 people, and residents appreciate that the all-inclusive monthly rent lets them enjoy their time, stay safe, and focus on what they want to do.
