    Caring staff affordable safe community

My mother lives at Down Manor and I'm very happy with her care. The staff are caring, responsive and go out of their way - maintenance is prompt and the activities director is fantastic, offering a wide range of programs. Apartments are pleasant and budget-friendly, with regular transportation, nice dining, beautiful grounds, and a walkable location near medical care, college and shopping. It's a safe, friendly community and I would recommend it.

    Summary of reviews

Providence Down Manor - Hood River is described predominantly as a community with attentive, service-oriented staff and a strong activity program. Families consistently highlight responsive caregiving, timely maintenance, and staff who assist with individualized needs. The facility's location is repeatedly noted as convenient and walkable — close to medical services, banking, a senior center, a supermarket and a community college — which supports independent errands and family access. Many reviewers characterize the culture as family-like and safe, and they regard the community as good value for the cost.

The activity program is a clear strength. Reviewers praise an engaged activity director and a broad calendar of offerings: games, exercise classes, music and writing groups, bridge, hiking and frequent outings and concerts. Social life centers on the dining room and shared programming; residents and families report that the activities and communal meals support friendships and resident engagement.

Dining receives generally favorable comments for menu variety and the social dining environment, though there is some variability in individual satisfaction. Prospective residents should confirm meal-plan details during a tour: reviewers indicate that not all plans include every daily meal and individual taste preferences differ. The dining room serves as a social hub, and several families found the menu accommodating and pleasant.

Physical plant and apartment options are mixed. The grounds and common areas are frequently described as attractive and well maintained, and the community offers garden plots and pleasant outdoor space. Apartment sizes and layouts vary — some units are comfortable two-bedroom designs (roughly 770 sq ft in one example) with ample closet and pantry storage, while other units are smaller with limited kitchen cupboard space. A notable accessibility limitation is the general lack of walk-in showers in resident rooms, which may be important for people with mobility needs. The community is pet-friendly for small animals and provides ESA accommodations in some cases.

Management and operations are largely viewed as accommodating: families cite helpful directors, prompt responses to questions, and reliable transportation to appointments and shopping. However, reviewers also point to variability in staff interpersonal conduct and communication tone; a small number of families described an instance of unacceptable staff behavior that they felt required quicker management intervention. This suggests prospective residents should ask about staff training, supervision, and the facility's complaint-resolution process when touring.

Overall, Providence Down Manor is presented as a community with strong social programming, caring staff, attractive grounds and reasonable pricing. Prospective residents and families would benefit from an in-person visit focused on unit layout and storage, bathing accessibility, meal-plan coverage and the community's process for addressing staff conduct concerns to ensure a good fit with individual needs and preferences.
