    Roomy, friendly, affordable senior living

I live here and I'm very pleased - roomy, well-laid-out apartments with good kitchens, excellent meals and housekeeping, and a friendly, helpful staff. There's a lively activities program (bingo, card games, outings), a big library, nice outdoor spaces, gated parking and easy access to MAX and buses. It's affordable for the value and feels homey; I would recommend it to other seniors.

    Summary of reviews

Hazelwood Community Apartments presents a mixed profile. Many reviewers praise the community aspects: friendly, helpful staff, an active social calendar (bingo, crafts, clubs, trips), a large library, and regular transportation to stores and medical appointments. The apartments themselves are frequently described as roomy and well laid out, with full kitchens, large windows, and balconies in some units. On the practical side, the community offers gated parking, proximity to public transit (bus and MAX), complimentary laundry and community Wi‑Fi, and an overall value-oriented price point for those seeking budget-conscious senior housing.

Dining and activities are a central strength when fully available. When the on-site kitchen is operating, food quality and portioning are often described positively and dining functions as a key social hub. The community runs a broad activities program and numerous communal amenities — patio seating, putting green, exercise room, library, and salon — that support resident engagement and independence. Transportation services and on-site communal spaces are commonly cited benefits for residents who want to remain active and mobile.

However, there are consistent operational concerns that prospective residents and families should evaluate. A substantial pattern describes reductions in formerly provided services (meal service, housekeeping, in-house salon and library seating), with an increased shift to a la carte pricing and extra fees for services that were previously included. This has created inconsistent affordability perceptions: some residents view the community as very good value, while others note high additional costs depending on meal and service choices. Transparency around fees and move-in costs is a recurring concern.

Management and maintenance are notable areas of variability. Several accounts indicate inconsistent responsiveness from management, limited availability after 4 p.m. and on weekends, slow maintenance turnarounds, and declining upkeep of common areas and parking. Although the property has implemented security measures such as cameras and restricted gate codes, reviewers also describe gaps in access control and instances of non-residents entering communal spaces, which have raised safety and package-theft concerns for some residents.

Care quality and clinical oversight are mixed in the reviews. Some families report accommodating staff and appropriate assistance with medical needs; others raise concerns about screening and placement practices for medically fragile residents and note gaps in staff communication with families, particularly outside regular business hours. Accessibility issues are also cited: certain activity rooms and common spaces are reported as difficult to navigate with wheelchairs, and there are accounts of elevator outages affecting evacuation options for mobility-impaired residents.

In summary, Hazelwood is frequently described as a community with strong social programming, practical apartment layouts, convenient transit access, and staff who are often helpful. Conversely, prospective residents should carefully verify current service levels (especially meal service and housekeeping), get clear, written information on pricing and extra fees, assess security measures, and evaluate accessibility for specific mobility or clinical needs. A focused tour that confirms up‑to‑date management practices, service availability, maintenance responsiveness, and conversations with current residents will help determine if the facility’s present operations match an individual’s expectations and care requirements.

    About Hazelwood Community Apartments

Hazelwood Community Apartments offers cost-effective independent living, where rent covers three meals a day, water, sewer, garbage, cable, and housekeeping, and you'll also find free local transportation which can be helpful when getting to appointments or running errands. Residents live in an apartment-style community, built back in 1998, with one to four bedrooms possible, but always featuring a dedicated primary bedroom that measures about 10 by 10 feet, and each unit has a full bathroom, kitchen, and access to a shared laundry room that doesn't cost extra. The building has secure gated access, so people feel safer, and there's wheelchair-friendly design, like accessible showers and baths, so moving around can be easier for people with mobility needs. Community areas include a media room, a theatre room, a library, and outdoor spaces like a community deck, putt putt green, and shuffleboard, and people can take part in daily organized activities and events if they want to be social or just try something new. Residents can have pets if they pay a deposit, and there's parking and transportation services available if they still drive or want a ride. Hazelwood Community Apartments, managed by Viridian Management, tries to honor "service with a smile," hoping to provide genuine concern, timely responses, and helpful program guidance to everyone, though nothing's perfect and life always brings little challenges now and then. They offer several care levels, including independent living for healthy, active folks, assisted living for people who may need some help with daily tasks, memory care for people with dementia or Alzheimer's, and even home care for those who want companionship and help at home, plus staff are present for medication management and extra health needs when required. Meals are prepared by chefs and meal planners, aiming for nutritious options, and the building has shared indoor and outdoor areas where people can spend time together or relax on their own, with nice lawns, patios, and landscaped areas to sit or stroll. The apartments are available for lease terms of twelve months and became open for occupants on March 18, 2022.
