    Caring staff, clean home, peace

I placed my dad here and I'm very pleased - the staff are genuinely friendly, caring and professional, the renovated Victorian building and grounds are lovely, and rooms and common areas are consistently clean. Activities are back after COVID, meals are served three times daily with a wonderful chef, and housekeeping, laundry and on-site services (hairdresser) make life easy. Move-in and family communication were smooth; my dad is comfortable, well cared for, and we have real peace of mind.

    Summary of reviews

Hayes Manor presents as a small, cost-conscious assisted-living option housed in a renovated Victorian-style building. Reviewers commonly praise the staff for being friendly, patient and communicative; families describe supportive move-in experiences and consistent family communication. The facility emphasizes basic assisted-living services — three meals daily, housekeeping and laundry, salon access, and a modest activities calendar — and many families find the combination of price and services to provide peace of mind.

Care and staffing are frequently cited as strengths. Multiple accounts describe attentive nursing and caregiving, compassionate interactions, and staff who answer questions and coordinate with families. At the same time, there is evidence of variability in care consistency: while some families characterize clinical support as exemplary, a smaller number express concerns about care outcomes or responsiveness. Prospective residents should ask specific questions about staffing levels, shift coverage, and clinical oversight to assess how the facility’s model will meet individual care needs.

Dining is a mixed area. The community provides regular meals in a pleasant dining space and some reviewers praise an on-site chef. However, food quality and portion size have been recurring concerns: comments include small servings, limited fresh-fruit options, occasional cold meals, and constrained menu variety. These patterns suggest that meal-service delivery and menu planning are uneven; families should inquire about sample menus, special-diet accommodations, and mealtime monitoring.

Activity programming exists (bingo, chapel, weekly outside entertainment, outings), and activities have resumed after pandemic restrictions for many residents. Several reviewers mentioned, however, that programming was less extensive than expected and that management sometimes overpromises the frequency or variety of events. Infection-control policies can also restrict participation during initial quarantine periods. Those prioritizing an active social calendar should verify the current activity schedule and available transportation for off-site trips.

The physical plant combines historic character with evidence of aging infrastructure. Rooms and common areas are often described as clean and nicely finished, but room sizes are mixed and small footprints with shared-bathroom arrangements are common. A few reviewers noted minor maintenance issues and darker interior spaces consistent with an older building. There are also isolated comments about odor and sanitation concerns in common areas and about camera placement and monitoring, which raise privacy and environmental-quality questions that should be clarified during a tour.

Management and operational themes include generally good family communication and a helpful admissions process, alongside occasional unmet expectations and service gaps relative to marketing. Transportation options appear limited, which can affect access to appointments and community outings. In sum, Hayes Manor may suit families seeking an affordable, small-community setting with personable staff and basic assisted-living services. Prospective residents should schedule an in-person visit to evaluate room size and layout, ask detailed questions about meal planning and portioning, review the activity calendar and quarantine policies, confirm transportation availability, and clarify camera and privacy practices before deciding.

    About Hayes Manor

Hayes Manor has a long history serving seniors, dating back to 1886 when it first opened as Hayes Mechanics Home for Men, and now men and women from all walks of life live there, with the campus tucked beside Bala Golf Club and big old azalea bushes brightening the grounds, and you'll find a gazebo and walking paths shaded by blooming trees wrapping around the building. The residence offers 53 spacious personal care rooms, each with a private or semi-private bath, and 12 independent living apartments looking right over the golf course with their own bedrooms, living and dining spaces, private baths, and kitchenettes, plus every apartment and room has its own heating and air conditioning controls so folks can stay comfortable. Food service includes three nutritious meals served fresh every day in the Terrace Dining Room, with morning and evening snacks given as well, and laundry and housekeeping services mean residents don't have to fuss about cleaning. Staff provide 24-hour care and keep an eye on security with a closed-circuit TV system all day and night. Personal care services help with bathing, dressing, meals, medication, and getting around, and nurses and nurse assistants are always on duty, while a house physician comes by weekly for check-ups, and there are visits from a dentist, podiatrist, and optometrist. There's a special care unit for folks who need short-term help, and the community offers care for dementia and memory challenges, too. Social life stays lively with daily activities-like bingo, exercise classes, yoga, painting, crafts, and even computer lessons-plus there's a multipurpose activity room for movies and gathering, and weekly social hours so everyone has a chance to mingle; trips out in the residents' van go to shopping centers, restaurants, concerts, shows like the Philadelphia Flower Show, museums, casinos, and even the zoo or down the shore, and you'll sometimes find folks tending the Bumblebee-Herb garden. Hayes Manor holds ecumenical chapel services every week, and birthdays, anniversaries, and holidays are always marked with some sort of celebration or in-house entertainment, while a barber and beauty shop comes in each week. Residents have access to cable TV and the internet throughout the building, and can sit in the lounge to visit with friends, or take in the view of the golf course from the apartment windows. Located near public transportation, shopping, medical facilities, churches, and places of learning, Hayes Manor has grown out of tradition, and continues to welcome and care for people of limited means, offering dignified housing and support with a focus on basic needs, safety, and community.
