    Spotless facility, attentive staff, happy

I've been impressed - spotless, pest-free facility, centrally located near shopping and entertainment, with friendly residents and wonderful food. Donna Bailey and the staff consistently go above and beyond with attentive, resident-centered care and trustworthy management; my mother had her happiest stay and loved the Chanukah celebration.

    Summary of reviews

Care and staff: Review content indicates that direct-care staff are frequently described as attentive and resident-centered, with multiple mentions of employees who go beyond basic duties to assist residents. These accounts suggest consistency in day-to-day caregiving for many families, with staff described as dedicated and responsive. At the same time, there are sharply contrasting accounts regarding management conduct that raise concerns about communication tone and leadership behavior; one reviewer made a named allegation about a specific manager. Prospective families should verify leadership style and ask for examples of staff supervision and conflict-resolution practices.

Dining and activities: Dining is a clear strength in the feedback, with reviewers characterizing meals positively. The facility appears to offer organized cultural and holiday programming (for example, a Chanukah celebration), indicating an active social calendar for residents. Interested parties may wish to request sample menus and a calendar of regular activities to confirm fit with a prospective resident’s preferences.

Facilities and location: The physical environment is described as clean and well-maintained, and multiple comments indicate effective pest-control measures. The facility’s central location near shopping and entertainment was noted as a convenience for families and residents. These points suggest generally acceptable facility upkeep and a location that supports outside engagement.

Management and governance: The strongest pattern of concern involves leadership and governance. While some reviewers characterize management as trustworthy, others raise serious concerns about conduct and communication tone, and at least one reviewer made an allegation involving a named manager. There are also statements that the facility lacks an active residents’ association and standing committees, and that claims about resident governance may not match reality. Together these items point to potential gaps in transparency, accountability, and resident advocacy structures.

Notable patterns and guidance: The overall impression is polarized: many comments praise caregiving, food, cleanliness, and location, while a smaller but notable set of comments express serious concerns about management behavior and governance structures. This creates inconsistent family experiences. Families considering this facility should ask targeted questions about leadership practices, resident-governance mechanisms (existence and activity of associations and committees), formal complaint-resolution processes, and recent examples of how management handled grievances. Verifying these operational details during a visit and speaking with current residents and family members can help clarify whether the facility’s strengths align with an individual resident’s needs and expectations.

    About Sherman House

Sherman House sits at 1635 Raoul Wallenberg Blvd in Charleston, South Carolina, and offers a straightforward place for seniors who want affordable living with a bit of help when needed, where the building provides 56 one-bedroom apartments for older adults with low income, and the rents usually depend on about 30% of a person's monthly adjusted gross income, which means qualified residents get access to safe, government-subsidized homes that are clean, simple, and easy to manage day-to-day, and the apartments are age-restricted and meant for independent living, so there's plenty of privacy, while the building itself has elevators, smoke detectors, fire alarms, at least one accessible unit, and a smoke-free policy to help everyone feel secure and comfortable. Residents get mail delivered right to the building and there are social, educational, and fun activities scheduled to keep folks socially and mentally active throughout the week, where trained medical staff are on hand if someone needs extra help, and the place has a reputation for kindness, with staff who are friendly, helpful, and respectful-some folks have called them joyful, and reviews measure up with family members and residents often saying they're happy or satisfied with their support or care, and even though there's no prices listed out front, the apartments go to those who qualify through HUD, with waiting lists sometimes stretching to years, but the sense of community seems worth the wait for many, since Sherman House helps people keep their independence while offering optional support like assisted living or memory care for those who need it, and the meals are prepared with attention to both quality and nutrition, and collaboration with the JCC means sometimes extra services or events come in to help out, so you'll find a welcoming environment for Charleston's seniors who want security, activities, and steady support, and everything-directions, schedules, and further contact information-is easy to access if you check their website or official listings, with extra help available from knowledgeable staff there to answer questions or walk families through the process if things get confusing.
