    Caring staff, seamless memory-care transition

I moved my mom in and I'm very pleased overall - Director Erica and the whole team are engaged, caring and responsive, the community is beautiful, spotless and secure, and the memory-care transition was seamless. Plenty of activities, strong communication, and attentive staff give our family real peace of mind; I would recommend Harvest to others.

    Summary of reviews

Overall impression: Harvest of Roanoke presents as a well-appointed, attractively updated senior living community with a strong emphasis on creating a home-like environment. Many families highlight compassionate direct-care staff, engaged directors, an active wellness focus, and a broad slate of activities that foster social engagement. The facility’s dining program, salon, housekeeping services, outdoor spaces and resident council are frequently cited as contributors to resident quality of life, and several families reported smooth move-ins and thoughtful medical follow-up that provided peace of mind.

Care and staff: Reviewers commonly describe direct-care staff as caring and attentive; leadership—particularly certain directors and wellness staff—receives repeated praise for responsiveness and rapport with residents. At the same time, there are recurring operational concerns related to staffing: shortages, long shifts, turnover, and what families describe as uneven caregiver training and competence. These patterns correspond with reports of inconsistent care-task execution and delays in attending to certain personal-care needs. There are also narrative-level concerns about staff conduct and responsiveness in a limited number of accounts; prospective families should seek specifics about staffing ratios, training, and incident-reporting protocols during their tour.

Dining and activities: Dining is generally viewed positively, with multiple comments about a varied menu and restaurant-style service that family members appreciate. Activities programming, including arts and crafts, games, movies, and scheduled social events, is a clear strength and cited as supporting social engagement and wellness. However, reviewers note that activity availability can be affected by staffing and infection-control measures; families should ask how group programming is maintained during staffing fluctuations or outbreak-related restrictions.

Facilities and operations: The physical plant is consistently described as clean, modern, and well maintained, with attractive common areas and outdoor space. When housekeeping is responsive the environment is a clear asset; conversely, there are isolated reports of delayed housekeeping response and sanitation issues which suggest variability in operational consistency. Transportation availability is limited by schedule constraints, which may affect outings and appointments for some residents. Memory-care accommodations are noted as welcoming and well-suited for residents requiring that level of support.

Management and patterns: Leadership engagement is a notable positive where present, though several reviewers called out leadership turnover, policy changes, and inconsistent communication as sources of frustration. Families expressed concerns about administrative follow-through—examples include billing/refund delays and scheduling miscommunications—pointing to gaps in consistency and transparency. Additionally, some families felt infection-control policies during COVID-19 were implemented in ways that substantially limited communal dining and activities; this highlights a trade-off between infection control and socialization that prospective residents should clarify with management.

Recommendation and considerations: Harvest of Roanoke offers many attributes families value—strong aesthetics, active programming, and staff members who are deeply committed in many cases. That said, patterns around staffing stability, training consistency, housekeeping responsiveness, and management communication warrant careful review. Prospective residents and families should ask for current staffing ratios, turnover metrics, written infection-control and visitation policies, housekeeping schedules, examples of medication and incontinence-care procedures, and clarity about transportation and on-site clinical services. Observing a mealtime and activity period during a visit can help assess day-to-day consistency and fit for an individual’s needs.
