    Intimate remodeled home excellent care

I'm very pleased with this intimate, thoroughly remodeled place (max 16 residents) - the staff are genuinely friendly and provide a high level of care. Meals are excellent, housekeeping and laundry are included, and residents keep personal furniture so rooms feel apartment-like and homey. Extras like in-room fridge/microwave, weekly fresh fruit deliveries, Skype for video calls, a responsive administrator, and a convenient location near my mom make this a comfortable option.

    Summary of reviews

Overall impression is positive on core elements of daily living: reviewers consistently described warm, attentive staff and a generally high level of care. Families and residents emphasized kindness and an approachable administrative presence, and many noted that staff–resident interactions felt respectful and supportive. At the same time there are operational concerns about transfer safety that families flagged; this suggests the facility should review transfer protocols and staff training to ensure consistent, documented safe-handling practices.

Dining and room arrangements are clear strengths. Meals were characterized as better than typical institutional food, and the facility provides regular meal service with additional touches such as weekly fresh fruit. Room options allow residents to bring personal furniture, decorate their spaces, and use in-room refrigerators and microwaves, while housekeeping and laundry are included. The combination of apartment-style living and resident personalization contributes to a homelike feel for many residents, and the recent interior remodeling was described as an improvement to the living environment.

The facility’s size and services shape daily life. The small capacity (maximum ~16 residents) creates an intimate community where social activities such as dominoes can occur and staff notice individual preferences. The location close to family homes and availability of virtual communication (Skype) support family contact. Conversely, reviewers described a perception that the setting can feel more like a clinical nursing home than a private home for some people; this reflects a possible mismatch between expectations for a purely homelike model and the realities of regulated clinical care.

Infection-control practices have been consequential to resident experience. Quarantine and isolation measures implemented during outbreak periods limited group activities and interpersonal contact, and families noted the social impact of those restrictions. This is consistent with pandemic-era precautions but remains an important operational trade-off between infection prevention and resident social engagement. In summary, the facility appears to deliver solid everyday care, good meals, and a personalized, small-community environment, while the leadership may benefit from targeted attention to transfer-safety protocols, ongoing communication about infection-control trade-offs, and continued efforts to reinforce a homelike atmosphere where possible.

    About 214 Martin-A Retirement Residence

214 Martin-A Retirement Residence sits right in a neighborhood in Uvalde, Texas, on two acres with green palms and crape myrtle trees out front, and you'll notice the ivy-coated, Spanish-style outside that makes it look like a big ranch-style hacienda rather than a typical facility, so folks feel like they're coming home, not just moving to another building, which can comfort those who want a familiar, homely place to spend their days. The remodeled building used to be a hospital but for over 18 years has served seniors needing assisted living, offering private and shared rooms, and each suite is about 450 square feet with its own spacious, private bathroom right next door, all on the ground floor for easy access, furnished and set up so residents can bring a sense of their own space. The small size-never more than 16 residents-means there are familiar faces, both from the other residents and staff, who help with daily activities, medication, bathing, and meals, and are around at all hours so people don't have to worry about getting help when they need it.

Meals use organic ingredients when possible, with housekeeping and linen services so no one has to keep up with chores, and laundry gets handled too, freeing up time for the exercise programs, planned activities, outings, and family functions that happen throughout the month, making it easy for people to stay active and social if they want to, whether that's playing games in the common rooms, joining in devotional services, or heading out for a meal somewhere in town. There's a transport van to take residents to doctor visits or on local trips, and for the basics you'll find air conditioning, internet, phone, cable, electricity, and water all included, alongside kitchenettes and maintenance-free living, so folks don't have to stress about repairs or bill paying. Staff supervise medications, help with personal care, and keep a daily eye out, so if someone wants to stay as independent as possible but knows they sometimes need a little extra help, there's always someone nearby and familiar ready to lend a hand, with each suite set up to feel private and safe. The community calls itself an extension of each resident's family, focusing on comfort, easy routines, meaningful activities, and a quiet, cozy feel where people settle in and can form real bonds with staff and neighbors.
