    Engaging programs and compassionate staff

I chose Elk Meadows and have been very pleased - the outgoing activities director keeps residents engaged with lots of programs and special events (even farm visits with llamas and visiting horses). The staff, executive director and on-site RN are compassionate and responsive, and the exercise program and physician support give me real peace of mind. The beautiful, lofted views and home-like, family atmosphere make it a serene, welcoming place for seniors.

    Summary of reviews

Elk Meadows presents a mixed picture. Many reviewers highlight clear strengths: an attractive rural location with scenic views, a home-like common area layout, and a memory-care unit that several families found impressive. Direct-care staff, including CNAs and an on-site RN, are frequently described as compassionate and attentive; some reviewers said staff go out of their way to accommodate residents and that the facility provides peace of mind. The activities program is a consistent positive theme — an outgoing activities director, regular exercise and wellness sessions, special-event outings, and animal visits (llamas, horses) contribute to resident engagement.

At the same time, recurring operational issues appear across reviews. Chronic understaffing is the most commonly cited concern and is linked to slow or missed responses to call lights, especially during evenings and nights. Families described delays in routine assistance, missed meals, and longer-than-acceptable response times; these issues point to staffing-coverage and scheduling gaps. Relatedly, several reviewers identified inconsistent leadership, including frequent executive-director turnover, which reviewers tied to uneven oversight and variability in how policies are enforced.

Dining and housekeeping show notable variability. Multiple reviewers reported inconsistent meal quality and timing, with comments about limited menu variety and instances of cold or poorly prepared dishes; there are also accounts of kitchen staffing instability. Housekeeping and groundskeeping were described as inconsistent as well — problems noted include insufficient cleaning of rooms, bathrooms, rugs, and some outdoor areas — indicating uneven implementation of upkeep and sanitation protocols.

Staff behavior and communication are mixed: while many families praise respectful and helpful caregivers, others described concerns about staff conduct and communication tone, occasional abrasiveness, staff distraction (for example, phone use), and lack of visible identification such as name tags. Clinical-incident response and family communication were areas of serious concern for some reviewers: delayed responses to medical needs, slow discovery of incidents, and dissatisfaction with how management communicated about events. One reviewer made an allegation of unexplained bruising and described unsatisfactory administrative follow-up.

Facility condition is similarly mixed: reviewers appreciate the setting, lofted windows, and a peaceful atmosphere, but several noted the building is older and could use a facelift; outdoor spaces and some furnishings were described as poorly maintained. Management impressions vary — some reviewers found administrators responsive and the facility well-run, while others experienced inconsistent policy enforcement, perceived contract breaches, or limited visitor flexibility.

In summary, Elk Meadows offers strong programming, an engaging activities team, and many staff members who provide compassionate care, particularly in memory-care areas. However, prospective residents and families should evaluate operational reliability: staffing levels and leadership stability appear to drive the most important differences in experience. Visitors should observe staffing ratios and call-light responsiveness, review housekeeping and dining procedures, and discuss leadership turnover and communication protocols with administration before making a placement decision.

About Elk Meadows Assisted Living & Memory Care

Elk Meadows Assisted Living & Memory Care sits in the small town of Oakley, Utah, surrounded by views of the valley and Uinta Mountains, where you'll find residents and staff treating each other like family in a caring community. The building feels home-like, with a lodge-inspired design, a barn-style clubhouse, spacious studios and one-bedroom suites, and big windows and vaulted ceilings that let in lots of natural light. Rooms include kitchens with refrigerators and microwaves, private bathrooms designed for safety, and individual heating and air conditioning, plus cable TV, Wi-Fi, and telephones. There are several layouts for people to choose what suits them best, with options for independent living, assisted living, memory care, and respite stays.

Staffed around the clock by registered nurses and certified nursing assistants, Elk Meadows offers help with daily activities like bathing, dressing, and medication management, and gives each resident a custom care plan. Residents who have Alzheimer's or other forms of dementia receive memory care in a secured area, with a nearly 3,000 square foot indoor and outdoor space, memory-enhancing programs, and therapies that help prevent wandering and confusion. Skilled nursing services cover rehabilitation, wound care, and comprehensive nursing support, and the community brings in occupational and physical therapists, offers mental health care, and helps with hospice when needed.

Residents eat meals together in restaurant-style dining or can get room service. The kitchen can provide special diets for vegetarians and those with health needs, and snacks are always around. A beauty parlor, salons, chapel, small libraries, and common areas give people places to relax and connect, and the gardens, patios, and views encourage them to get outdoors when they want some fresh air. The facility offers resident and visitor parking, and provides complimentary transportation, too.

Elk Meadows runs a full schedule of daily activities, both community-sponsored and resident-run, including games, music, Tai Chi, arts and crafts, lectures, story time, and Sunday church services. Some people lead their own groups for gardening or recreation, and there's a swimming pool, hot tub, and recreation rooms available. Housekeeping, laundry, and linen services are done for everyone, with private cleaning for each person's room. The facility allows for service coordination between licensed clinicians and provides services like podiatry and pharmacy visits on site.

Pets are allowed with some restrictions, and there's accommodation for special payment methods including checks and credit cards. Residents have choices in how much support they receive, with personal aides and companion care on call if needed, and the staff helps support physical and emotional wellbeing while aiming to let everyone keep as much independence as possible. The atmosphere is friendly and relaxed, and visitors who stop by for meals often note the sense of kindness and respect. Elk Meadows has a reputation for clean facilities and dedicated staff, and has served the Summit County community for over 20 years.
