    Sunny friendly independent living community

I live in a sunny, non-institutional independent-living community with a full kitchen and washer/dryer in my tidy one-bedroom. The staff and residents are very friendly and personable, the place is clean and well-kept, and there are plenty of activities and outings (arts & crafts, bingo, shuffleboard, social hours, daily mass) along with dining, housekeeping, laundry, and transportation services. Utilities are included, it's pet-friendly, and common areas like the dining room, garden, and computer/beauty spaces make it comfortable and social - I'm very happy we found it.

    Summary of reviews

St. Joseph Senior Living presents as a budget-conscious senior community oriented primarily toward independent living. The facility is frequently described as clean and well kept, with attractive outdoor gardens and an elegant dining room. Independent-living apartments tend to be sunny and include full kitchens in many units; utilities, housekeeping, laundry, and some in-unit washer/dryer configurations are commonly available. On-site amenities such as a beauty shop, small store, computer access, and scheduled Netflix/viewing events contribute to a residential feel rather than an institutional one.

Staff and management receive generally positive comments for being friendly, approachable, and willing to work with families. Reviewers highlight staff warmth and personable interactions as a consistent strength, and management is viewed as accessible during tours and move-in. At the same time, several operational constraints appear repeatedly: staff are described as stretched, and this leads to concerns about responsiveness and conduct in higher-acuity settings. The assisted-living component is characterized as better suited to self-sufficient or low-dependency residents; families seeking more clinical or hands-on care should probe staffing levels, clinical capabilities, and emergency procedures during a visit.

Dining and activities are notable features but show mixed experiences. The community offers restaurant-style dining in a modern kitchen and schedules regular social programming—bingo, shuffleboard, arts and crafts, holiday parties, social hour, and routine outings for shopping. Meals are often charged separately from rent (a pay-for-meals model), which affects overall affordability; meal quality is described as variable across reviewers. Activities are available and appreciated by many residents, including daily religious services, but programming and participation can be limited for residents who require more support or for households seeking an extensive activity calendar.

Transportation and logistics show variability. The community provides weekly shopping transportation and occasional outings, but families should confirm availability and reliability of medical-appointment transport, as accounts differ. Unit size and condition are also variable: some apartments are described as nicely sized and recently updated, while others are smaller or dated; first-floor unit availability may be constrained. Finally, while many families report a positive move-in and ongoing experience, there are isolated but serious concerns about conduct and safety that warrant direct inquiry. Prospective residents and their families would be advised to tour multiple unit types, ask specific questions about assisted-living staffing ratios and protocols, clarify what is included in fees (meals, utilities, parking), and confirm transportation arrangements before committing.

    About St. Joseph Senior Living

St. Joseph Senior Living sits in Salt Lake City, Utah, not far from places like the Family History Library and Big Cottonwood Canyon, and has served seniors since 1927, building a long history of supporting residents' well-being. The staff and caregivers greet folks by name each day and offer help with bathing, grooming, dressing, medication, and meals, keeping a focus on making sure everyone feels valued and comfortable. The community holds a 4-star overall quality rating from Medicare.gov and a 4.5-star "Excellent" average from six reviews, reflecting strong performance according to both residents and regulators, and provides round-the-clock help with 24-hour video camera surveillance, an emergency pendant call system, and on-call nursing and home health agencies always available.

Residents can choose from different care levels, with options for independent living, assisted living, memory care for Alzheimer's and dementia, long-term care, skilled nursing, home care, and hospice care. There are studio apartments and suites, some with kitchenettes, all with wall-to-wall carpeting, scenic views, Wi-Fi, cable, and features like private or shared layouts, and the move-in fee equals one month's rent. Housekeeping staff clean weekly and handle deep cleans twice a year, and there are laundry machines on each floor for those who want to do their own washing.

Meals are served restaurant-style in a bright, light-filled dining room, and chefs work on fresh, nutritious menus with options residents can suggest or customize, so everyone gets something they'd like. The grounds have walking paths, a courtyard, outdoor seating, and gardens, while the inside has a library, game and hobby rooms, a beauty and barber shop with a licensed cosmetologist, and spaces for activities such as poker, arts and crafts, music, billiards, dominoes, and movies, and residents often meet daily for these events, building friendships and a sense of belonging. The community gives scheduled van rides three times a week for medical appointments and shopping, encourages outings to local places or events, and supports daily living needs-all within a secure environment.

Therapies use new research and state-of-the-art equipment, and the care team works with residents and their families to personalize plans and programs, always focusing on comfort, safety, and quality of life. Therapists provide both hands-on and high-tech approaches, helping each resident with what fits them best, whether that's physical therapy, fitness, memory support, or just a helping hand. Pets are welcome with some policies, and the staff plans plenty of group activities, healthy outings, fitness classes, spiritual services, and gardening time. Apartments come with monthly rates that cover most services, and the in-house fee structure keeps things simple, though the community hasn't published detailed pricing.

The management group, Purple Door, LLC, and all staff aim every day to create a homelike place where people feel safe, cared for, and included, emphasizing open communication and friendly support. Residents can see artwork in the halls, relax in comfortable rooms, use high-speed internet, and join community events. Those interested can visit the website stjosephliving.com for more details or to request information, and the team offers on-site tours to help prospective residents see daily life and amenities.
