I chose this community for my mom and have been very pleased. The compassionate, competent staff (Amy, the Happiness Coordinator, really shines) provide personalized, heartfelt care in a beautiful, homey, and very clean building. Meals are fresh and farm-to-table, there are regular medical visits and an on-site salon, and lively activities keep residents engaged-overall a warm, safe, family-like place I'd recommend.

Summary of reviews
Bickford of Chesapeake presents as a visually appealing, modern assisted-living community with many features families find attractive. Multiple accounts describe a well-designed, homey interior with fireplaces, intimate seating areas, bright studio layouts, and technology-forward touches. The community offers a substantial activity program — including memory-stimulation stations and a named engagement role that keeps residents active — and has on-site amenities such as an in-house hair salon and regular clinician visits that contribute to convenience for residents and families.
Dining is frequently cited as a strength: reviewers describe a farm-to-table approach, fresh ingredients, generous portions, and a welcoming dining experience. Meals are included and are often characterized as flavorful and well presented. The facility’s Higher Path model and specific staff roles (for example an engagement or “Happiness” coordinator) are repeatedly mentioned as contributors to a positive day-to-day atmosphere.
Care quality descriptions are mixed. Many families praise compassionate, resident-focused caregivers and instances of above-and-beyond assistance and respectful communication. At the same time, a pattern of operational inconsistencies emerges: inconsistent personal-care routines (bathing, dressing), lapses in medication administration and dietary accommodation, and delays responding to call bells or emergency alerts. These issues are frequently linked by reviewers to understaffing and elevated staff turnover, which reviewers identify as contributors to unreliable service delivery.
Staffing and management are described in both positive and critical terms. Several reviews commend individual caregivers and leadership who are approachable and communicative; others describe slow or inadequate management follow-up, communication gaps between shifts, and unresolved family concerns. Administrative areas cited for improvement include billing responsiveness, timely resolution of complaints, and clearer communication when care plans change.
Operational and facility maintenance details show contrast between interior condition and some service areas. The interior is generally viewed as clean and well cared for, but reviewers note inconsistencies in room housekeeping and specific exterior maintenance issues (landscaping, courtyard upkeep). There are also occasional concerns about resident-privacy and account controls that families found troubling and worthy of direct inquiry during tours.
Notable patterns for prospective residents and families to consider: the community offers many elements of a high-quality assisted-living experience — attractive environment, engaging activities, fresh dining, and compassionate staff members — but those strengths can be undermined by inconsistent operational execution. Prospective families should prioritize direct questions about staffing levels and turnover, emergency response times and call-button systems, medication and dietary-protocol controls, shift-to-shift communication practices, and administrative/billing procedures. Observing a mealtime, meeting the engagement coordinator, and discussing specific care-plan mechanisms during a visit can help assess whether the day-to-day operations match the facility’s presentation.

About Bickford of Chesapeake
Bickford of Chesapeake sits on Great Bridge Boulevard in Chesapeake, Virginia and offers senior living for adults who need different kinds of care, like independent living, assisted living, and memory care. The building has 74 beds and comes with studio and one-bedroom options, depending on what someone wants and needs. The care team uses a person-centered approach, and there's a HigherPath health model that's nationally recognized and focused on helping people live longer and feel better. Folks can get help with their daily activities-like bathing, meals, grooming, and managing medicine-and the staff always has a friendly caregiver close by when someone needs them. The kitchen makes homemade meals from scratch, so residents get good food each day. There's high-speed Wi-Fi to stay connected, and plenty of comforts designed for easy living, like social activities and a calendar with something happening just about every day if someone wants to join in. For older adults who want independent living, there are spaces built to keep everyone active and social without offering unnecessary help. For assisted living, residents get support where it's needed-nothing more, nothing less. Bickford of Chesapeake is also set up to care for people with Alzheimer's disease or dementia, with special memory care spaces that help reduce confusion and keep people safe from wandering, all in an environment meant to feel small and welcoming. The skilled care team can also help when someone needs more medical support than standard assisted living can give. They do tours both in person and virtually, so people can see the dining rooms, daily routines, and what life's like at Bickford. The place aims to let everyone keep as much independence as possible, supporting each person in a way that suits them best, with a focus on helping folks stay happy, well, and connected.
Bickford Senior Living was founded in 1991 by Don and Judie Eby when they were unable to find quality assisted living care for Don's mother, Mary Bickford, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. The company opened its first facility in November 1992 in Kansas, becoming one of the state's first assisted living residences. Headquartered in Olathe, Kansas, Bickford remains a family-owned and operated business committed to serving families with compassionate care for over three decades. Today, Bickford Senior Living operates approximately 54-61 communities across 10 states, including Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio, Virginia, and Georgia.
