    Smooth transition and caring staff

I moved my husband here after surgery and the transition to assisted living was smooth. The staff are caring, communicative and responsive; the building is clean, new and welcoming with strong rehab services, varied activities, tasty heart-healthy dining and secure grounds. On-site nurses and the Road to Home program really helped recovery and family communication was excellent. I'm grateful to the team and would recommend this community.

    Summary of reviews

Overall impression: The facility is consistently described as clean, modern, and well-appointed with an emphasis on memory care and short-term rehabilitation. Families and visitors commonly praise the caring demeanor of staff, the presence of on-site therapy (PT/OT/ST) and a team-based clinical approach, and programs aimed at recovery such as the Road to Home initiative. Public spaces, gardens, and renovated interiors contribute to a welcoming, hotel-like environment that many reviewers found comforting for residents and visitors alike.

Care and staff: Reviews emphasize compassionate, resident-focused caregiving. Nursing and therapy teams are frequently characterized as professional, gentle, and proactive, and front-desk and concierge staff are noted for being welcoming and helpful. Many accounts describe staff who learn residents’ names, provide individualized attention, and facilitate family involvement. At the same time, reviewers also identify variability in staffing and expertise: responsiveness can differ by shift, care-manager communication and administrative follow-through are inconsistent at times, and there are occasional gaps in staff training or knowledge that prospective families should query during tours.

Dining and activities: Dining is a clear strength in format and variety—restaurant-style service, private dining rooms, flexible hours including 24-hour options, and attention to healthier, lower-sodium choices. Several reviewers praised specific menu items and an attentive dining staff, although others noted uneven meal quality or presentation on certain days. The activities program is robust, with a wide range of offerings from arts-and-crafts, Bingo, and clubs to live music, scenic rides, and social hours. Activity participation can vary by resident and by unit; some families suggested that resident engagement is uneven across floors or shifts.

Facilities and safety: The community features multiple apartment configurations, ample common areas, and well-kept outdoor spaces. Renovations and modern finishes are frequently mentioned, as are security measures such as sign-in policies. A facility policy of open doors on the memory-care floor was highlighted; while it reflects a less-restrictive approach, some families framed this as a potential wandering-risk tradeoff to discuss with leadership. A few commenters noted areas that could use cosmetic refresh or attention to maintenance.

Management and operations: Leadership and many operational elements receive positive comments—helpful tours, attentive transition support, and proactive programs for recovery. Conversely, administrative weaknesses appear as a recurring operational theme: inconsistent care-manager communication, invoicing and insurance verification issues, and occasional delays in buzzer response or supervision. Cost is also a common consideration; several reviewers described the community as premium-priced, which may be a barrier for some families.

Bottom line and recommendations: The facility presents a strong care and lifestyle profile for families seeking memory-care expertise, rehabilitative services, and a lively activities schedule in a modern, secure setting. Prospective residents should ask targeted questions during a visit: staffing levels and response expectations by shift, how care-management and billing interactions are handled, examples of recent staff training, meal sampling and presentation practices, and the facility’s approach to memory-care door policies and resident safety. A trial month option and direct conversations with therapy and care-management staff can help clarify fit for individual needs.

    About Sunrise of McLean

Sunrise of McLean Village sits in a welcoming spot, and anyone coming in will see the big lobby made for greeting residents and visitors, which always seems to brighten the day, and if the sun's out people can enjoy the exterior patio, maybe for a breath of fresh air or just to sit and chat. The main dining room and the bistro cover meals, so residents have choices and don't have to worry about cooking, and fresh flowers on white linens can be found most days, letting things look nice without being fancy for no reason. There's a library area with good lighting so people can read, and there are plenty of other common rooms set up for socializing or activities, because people like to gather for games or just some conversation. The cozy fireplace lounge and elegant two-story foyer with a staircase give the place a homey feel while still looking put together. The facilities keep up pet-friendly policies, and anyone who needs high-speed internet or better access for a wheelchair will find that too.

Sunrise of McLean Village is a continuing care retirement community, so residents can pick from several types of care, including independent living, assisted living, skilled nursing, and specialized memory care for people with Alzheimer's or other dementia. The place offers short-term stays if someone just needs help for a little while, and respite care or hospice are available if needed. There are memory care gardens with paved paths, flowerbeds, red umbrellas, and even a big birdcage, creating a safe but inviting area for walking and sitting outside, and the memory care suites offer simple comforts like cherry cabinets, kitchenettes, personal touches, and soft lighting. The memory care library and common area are set up with cozy seats and large windows, letting in light and giving people quiet spaces to read or just relax.

A range of programs aim to keep everyone engaged, like the Reminiscence Program and Terrace Club, which tailor daily activities for people's interests and abilities, and staff work to support people in eating, bathing, dressing, and keeping up with medications. There's individualized care to help each person maintain as much independence as possible, with skilled nurses on site for those who need more medical or rehabilitative support. The community supports veterans and welcomes people from many backgrounds, connecting residents with resources for health, legal help, transportation, or planning, using a directory with over 26,000 support programs. Anyone who needs special help or wants to learn more can find guides, articles, and even local events through the facility's network of dedicated websites and resources.

Meals focus on nutrition and quality, and the open-concept kitchen and bistro add to a home-like atmosphere, while common areas stay clean and well-kept. Sunrise of McLean Village has been run by Sunrise Senior Living for over 35 years, and the administrator is Maureen Davis. The approach stays holistic, aiming to pay attention to each person's needs and preferences, always keeping safety and well-being as priorities, especially in secured memory care spaces where comfort and peace stay front and center. The community holds various awards and compliance verifications as a recognized provider in Virginia, and staff often help coordinate additional services like Dignity Home Care for seniors who need care at home, or hospice at the end of life. With 88 beds in the Assisted Living Facility, the range of senior living options makes it possible for residents to adjust their level of care if their health changes, so they can stay where they feel comfortable and supported.
