    Kind staff, excellent dining, activities

I toured this beautiful, well-kept community and chose it for my mother - the staff are kind, responsive and communicative, and their daily updates show she's well cared for and even gaining weight. Bright apartments, excellent dining (three restaurants/chefs), lots of activities and outings, inclusive memory care, thoughtful move-in support and an exceptional tour guide (Paul) made this a strong choice - I'll be moving there soon.

    Summary of reviews

Evergreen Retirement Community presents as a well-maintained, bright campus with a clear emphasis on hospitality and lifestyle programming. Visitors and families frequently described attractive public spaces, landscaped grounds, and private rooms that receive abundant natural light. The community offers a full continuum of careโ€”independent living, assisted living, memory care, and skilled nursingโ€”combined with visible investments in dining venues and leisure amenities (multiple restaurants, performing-arts space, exercise room, and outings to local cultural destinations).

Staff and care were central themes. Many families praised admissions and tour staff for informative, empathetic guidance and well-organized onboarding materials. Care teams were often described as communicative and compassionate, with examples of daily updates and responsive follow-up. Clinical capacity is present on-site and reviewers cited competent medical staff and evidence of long-tenured employees. At the same time, there are recurring concerns about staffing consistency; reviewers described episodes that suggest staffing shortages can affect day-to-day care continuity and create variability in service levels between units.

Dining and activities are clear strengths. The community operates multiple dining venues with chef-led menus and a variety of meal choices; reviewers credited the food with being nutritious and enjoyable and noted instances of positive clinical outcomes tied to nutrition. The activity program is broadโ€”fitness classes, yoga, arts, outings, bingo, and social hoursโ€”supporting an engaged social scene for many residents. However, resident participation is uneven: some households report a lively, busy calendar while others observed lower activity engagement among certain resident groups.

Facility condition and management impressions are mixed. Many areas are clean, tastefully appointed, and well cared for, but a number of reviewers described portions of the campus as less modern than expected. Apartment sizes were called smaller than anticipated in some units, and pricing is at the premium end; multiple families expressed a perception that costs are high relative to some aspects of the built environment. During infection-control periods (notably COVID-era restrictions) the community implemented restrictive visitation practices that some families found limiting, though communication around those policies was frequently rated positively.

Overall, Evergreen will likely appeal to prospective residents who prioritize strong dining, varied activities, an active social environment, and a reliable continuum of clinical services. Prospective families should ask targeted questions about current staffing ratios and turnover, unit sizes and layouts, what is included in published fees, and how the community manages visitation and outbreak-response protocols to assess fit and value for their specific needs.

    About Evergreen Retirement Community

Evergreen Retirement Community sits on N Westfield St in Oshkosh and covers over 35 acres surrounded by Oak Savanna woodlands and natural walking trails, so folks living there can watch the seasons change and enjoy the quiet of the outdoors, with nearby gardens, waterfalls, and green pocket neighborhoods where homes gather around shared spaces, and there's always something blooming or leaves to watch blow around. This is a non-profit, Christian-based community that focuses on people having choices, freedom, and safety, and staff work every day to make sure residents feel valued, whether residents live independently or need some help with daily things. There are about 250 people living here on campus, and everyone from grandchildren to volunteers to local groups shows up for annual events like Oshkosh Celebration of Lights and Nutcracker in the Castle, which makes it feel like home and brings in new faces all the time.

This campus offers three types of independent living-Courtyard Residence Apartments, Manor Apartments, Evergreen Village, and houses called Evergreen Homes-for folks who want to downsize but aren't ready to give up their own kitchens or living rooms, plus two levels of assisted living and memory care for people who need some or a lot of help, and a skilled nursing facility with long-term care, short-term rehab, and post-surgical support, so people don't have to worry about moving to another place as needs change, because it's a Continuing Care Retirement Community. Evergreen At Home provides personal care and homemaker services for those preferring to stay where they are, and for anyone recovering from surgery or illness there are inpatient rehabilitation and therapy services.

Staff at Evergreen offer help with moving around, daily care, and provide a 24-hour call system for safety, and there are services for bathing, dressing, and medication management, including care for people who aren't able to walk or who have memory loss. There's plenty to choose from for meals-cafeteria, group dining rooms, and three dining spots-with menu choices for people with allergies or diabetes, and they handle laundry, dry cleaning, and housekeeping for folks who don't want to keep up with chores anymore. People can catch the bus or use parking lots if they drive, and the place sits close to I-41 for families visiting from all over.

There's a library, gift shop, salon and barber, fitness rooms, arts room, chapel, and healthcare services, and the staff puts together all sorts of recreational and social programs, from bingo and grand evenings to music events, trips, computer classes, laughter clubs, and card games, plus group meals like men's breakfast and women's lunch. You'll find local art, coloring pages, the Oshkosh Scavenger Hunt, a Mini Mural Project, and a focus on arts and culture with museums, galleries, theater, and even annual happenings like the EAA AirVenture. Outdoors there's fishing, kayaking, walking, and parks like Menominee Park and Lake Winnebago nearby, along with boutiques, farmers markets, and places for camping, hotels, or RV stays if people visit.

If someone wants to hold a meeting, a family event, or even a wedding, the community hosts gatherings and special occasions, and Evergreen Foundation supports ongoing activities and community service projects. It's easy for residents to feel connected, with social clubs, speaker series, and opportunities for volunteering, and those who need therapy or nursing care get help right in the same place. The campus blends the feeling of a small town with wide open natural space and specialized care, so folks can stay as active and engaged as they want, with options that fit nearly any need as time goes by.
