    Rehab stay with compassionate staff

I stayed here for rehab and was very satisfied - PT/OT helped me make steady progress, nurses, CNAs and doctors were attentive and compassionate, and staff communicated promptly. The building is clean, well-organized and home-like with a nice outdoor garden and good food; social services and Spanish translation were helpful. I'd recommend this facility and would choose it again.

    Summary of reviews

Overall impressions of Burgess Square Healthcare & Rehab Centre are mixed but tilt positive for core rehabilitative services. Many families praised the facilityโ€™s therapy teams โ€” physical and occupational therapists were frequently described as skilled and effective at producing measurable progress. Nursing staff, CNAs and dining-room attendants received numerous positive mentions for compassion, attentiveness and teamwork. Reviewers also noted helpful social-work support, accessible family communication (including translator services), and a generally clean, home-like environment with a pleasant outdoor garden and private room options.

Clinical care strengths center on rehabilitation, wound care and daily nursing attention. Several accounts highlighted good coordination between therapists and bedside staff, prompt responses to many clinical needs, and dignity in nursing interactions. However, there is variability in staff conduct and professionalism; a subset of families described instances of unkind or poorly informed staff interactions. Relatedly, reviewers identified inconsistent handoffs between shifts and occasional breakdowns in communication that may affect continuity of care.

Dining and nutrition received mixed feedback. Many families complimented meal presentation, dining staff attentiveness, and satisfactory food quality, while other accounts described stale items, limited menu options at times, or isolated dining-safety/medication-handling concerns. Activity programming was not a prominent theme in the reviews; prospective families should ask about specific activity schedules if that is a priority.

Facility and management themes include generally good cleanliness and maintenance of interior spaces but some comments about areas needing updating and intermittent environmental-control issues (temperature/comfort). A few operational concerns emerged around staffing levels and therapy availability, which families connected to delays in assistance and perceived limits on rehabilitation intensity. More serious individual accounts raised questions about billing clarity and the discharge process; these suggest that prospective residents should clarify financial and discharge policies in advance. There were also isolated accounts implying gaps in fall-prevention practices and delayed responses to call bells โ€” operational areas that warrant specific inquiry during a tour.

In summary, Burgess Square appears to provide strong rehabilitative and wound-care services with compassionate frontline staff and a generally well-kept, home-like environment. At the same time, variability in staff conduct, communication handoffs, meal consistency, and certain administrative processes are recurring themes. Prospective residents and families would be well advised to tour the unit, speak directly with therapy and nursing leadership, review billing/discharge procedures, and ask about staffing ratios and fall-prevention protocols before making a placement decision.

About Burgess Square Healthcare & Rehab Centre

Burgess Square Healthcare & Rehab Centre sits in DuPage County and holds 203 certified beds, and most days around 124 people live here. The building's rooms still look like they did when first built, so anyone looking for fancy new spaces might not find that here, but the premises stay well-kept and clean. People say the staff are considerate and pleasant, which can make a difference during tough times, and specialized care stands out, with programs that have their own distinct names, like the 'Heart and Soul' Cardiac Care Program which offers a holistic approach for those with heart problems, and the Advanced Pulmonary Care partnership with Integrated Respiratory Solutions for people who need help with their lungs. Folks recovering from surgery or falls come here often, and the rehab program gets high marks for helping people get back on their feet.

Burgess Square is a for-profit partnership, and you'll find rehabilitation services, physical rehab, palliative and hospice care, cardiac care, and a Complex Wound Care Program with certified wound care nurses, a wound doctor, a registered dietitian, and a nurse practitioner. It also works with respected hospitals and doctor groups to bring in more advanced treatments. The staff nurse hours per resident each day average 4.79, above the state average, and nurse turnover is a bit lower, but there's still a nurse turnover rate of 42.5%. The centre provides WiFi, air conditioning, restrooms, wheelchair accessibility, and parking. People needing complex care, like wound or cardiac care, get focused help through individualized treatment plans.

Despite awards such as America's Best Nursing Homes 2022 and Newsweek's ranking as #1 in Illinois, inspection reports show 23 documented deficiencies, with 9 from a state inspection on September 27, 2024, and others found in complaint reports, including handling of residents' money or belongings and three infection-related issues. There's also one deficiency about preventing hazards and providing enough supervision to stop accidents, and a violation relating to infection control. This means that while the centre offers many advanced care options and skilled services, it's had trouble meeting some standards, especially involving resident safety and infection control. People choosing Burgess Square should look at both its strengths in rehab and nursing care and its record of health and safety citations to make a decision that fits what they need.
