    Warm attentive staff, clean facilities

My mother lived here for over five years and I'm very pleased with the care - staff are warm, attentive and proactive, nurses are available and medication assistance is included. The rooms and common areas are clean and nicely decorated, meals are great (three a day), and there are plenty of activities plus an on-site church, library and laundry. Admission was efficient, residents and coordinators were friendly, and I would recommend this community.

    Summary of reviews

Overall impression The Retreat Assisted Living is described as a clean, attractively furnished community with a welcoming atmosphere and active social programming. Many families emphasize long‑term positive outcomes for residents who benefit from friendly peers, engaged activity coordinators, and an environment that feels homelike. On‑site conveniences such as a chapel, library, laundry, and three daily meals contribute to a supportive daily routine.

Care and staffing Care relationships are a consistent strength in many accounts: staff are often characterized as warm, attentive, and responsive, and nursing presence is described as proactive by multiple families. Several reviewers indicated that their relatives remained at the community for extended periods with generally good outcomes. However, there are operational concerns around medication administration and accountability. Reviewers described medication errors and issues with storage and access; there are even allegations of missing medications and personal belongings. Families should therefore ask specific questions about medication‑management protocols, reconciliation practices, secure storage, and incident reporting.

Dining and clinical nutrition The community provides three meals per day and has dietitian‑designed menus, which some residents enjoy. That said, there are recurring comments about inconsistent meal quality and instances where meals were spoiled or not adequately adapted to individual dietary requirements. The pattern suggests that while menu planning exists, implementation and individualized diet follow‑through can be uneven. Prospective residents with strict dietary needs should verify how those needs are documented and monitored.

Activities, facilities, and location Activities and social engagement are frequently praised; families note a variety of programming and friendly resident cohorts that reduce isolation. Physical facilities inside are described as well maintained and attractive. Limitations include a relatively small outdoor yard, restricted outdoor access in parts of the property, and constrained vehicle/parking access; reviewers also cite neighborhood walkability and parking as less than ideal. Some reviews reference sanitation or odor concerns in outdoor/ground areas, indicating the need to inspect outside spaces during a visit.

Management, communication, and recommendations Communication and professionalism during admissions and care transitions are mixed: some families experienced an efficient, seamless move‑in, while others reported poor follow‑up, unclear explanations, or unprofessional interactions from individual staff members. These inconsistencies point to variable front‑line communication and case coordination. Prospective residents and families should ask targeted questions about how the facility handles medication audits, incident notification, dietary accommodations, property security, and routine communication with families. An in‑person tour that includes review of medication procedures, outdoor spaces, and sample menus is advisable to confirm fit for an individual’s needs.

    About The Retreat Assisted Living

The Retreat Assisted Living sits in Hartford's historic South Green neighborhood, right near the Helen and Harry Gray Cancer Center, and you'll see that the building has a simple layout with 100 apartments, studios and one-bedroom units, all with private bathrooms, step or roll-in showers, kitchenettes, and individually controlled heat and air conditioning so each resident can be comfortable, plus you'll see there are safety and handicap features throughout, wheelchair access in all homes, and a 24-hour call system in every apartment. The community keeps meals easy, with three homemade meals a day included, made to cover special diets like diabetes or allergies, and there's a South End Market where folks can grab snacks and simple extras.

There are common rooms like Living and Family Rooms, a Library, Chapel, Media Room, and Internet Café open for everyone, and five Family Rooms hold toy chests and places to watch movies with visitors or grandkids. There's a Civic Center activity room for meetings and larger social gatherings, so residents can join in on music, games, and different workshops, plus there's a regular schedule of arts and crafts, movie nights, exercise classes, education activities, billiards, and day trips both nearby and farther out. The staff help with things like bathing, dressing, medication, insulin shots, moving between bed and wheelchair, and personal chores, with nurses and caregivers on-site around the clock, assisted by a 24-hour emergency response system for peace of mind, and they'll coordinate care with outside doctors when needed.

Residents get transportation for medical appointments, errands, or spiritual events, and there's parking if they drive. The place welcomes small pets and hosts pet visits, helping keep everyone in good company, and allows family and guests for shared meals or events. Amenities make things easier, with on-site laundry, help with cleaning, a hair salon and barber, a spa and sauna, a book room, outdoor gardens, and walking paths. There's focus on active and social living, so different entertainment comes in the form of animal therapy, music, games, crafts, devotional gatherings, and regular special events. For those with diabetes or special health needs, the staff can help with care like insulin or incontinence, always aiming to help folks live as independently as possible and build days full of routine, comfort, and a little excitement now and then. The Retreat Assisted Living is known for friendly staff and tries to give residents a safe, warm, and supportive place, with options for Medicaid and other insurance accepted, all in an affordable, urban setting built with seniors' needs in mind.
