    Sunny stay, empathetic staff, life-changing

I had a very positive stay - a sunny room, delicious food, clean facility, and convenient parking made it comfortable. The staff and social worker were empathetic and communicative, PT/OT (Ajay and Maggie) delivered life-changing rehab, and medical/COVID precautions were reassuring; I highly recommend Crestfield.

    Summary of reviews

Crestfield Rehabilitation Center & Fenwood Manor elicits sharply mixed impressions. Across reviews there is a clear pattern of strong, therapy-focused clinical services alongside operational and facility-level inconsistencies. Many families and former residents praise the rehabilitation teams — particularly physical and occupational therapists — for clear instruction, attentive therapy sessions, and outcomes that supported returning home. Several accounts emphasize compassionate individual caregivers and effective social-work coordination that improved communication with families.

At the same time, reviews describe variability in nursing and ancillary care. Positive descriptions of patient-centered nursing care coexist with accounts of overworked staff, long call-bell response times, and delays in medication administration. These descriptions suggest intermittent staffing shortfalls and workflow pressures that can affect day-to-day responsiveness. There are also statements indicating gaps in medication management and clinical follow-up that, in at least one account, led to escalation of medical needs.

Dining and activity feedback is inconsistent. Some residents and families praised the food as enjoyable, while others characterized meals as inadequate or poorly planned; this points to variability in meal quality and in nutritional monitoring. The facility is generally described as clean at the room level with neat decor in places, but multiple reviewers noted outdated infrastructure (common areas and bathrooms needing renovation) and rooms without adequate air-conditioning. Odor concerns in some common areas and bathrooms were mentioned, indicating sanitation or ventilation issues in parts of the building.

Management and administrative experiences are mixed. Several reviewers appreciated clear family communication and supportive social services; others reported unresponsive administrative staff, difficulty with discharge coordination, and restrictive visitation policies implemented during infection-control periods. There are also comments about inconsistent staff professionalism and privacy-related practices that families found troubling. Cost was flagged as relatively high by some families relative to the perceived value when operational issues occurred.

Overall pattern and practical guidance: Crestfield/Fenwood appears to be a strong option when focused rehabilitation therapies and short-term recovery are primary goals — particularly where skilled PT/OT can facilitate return home. Prospective residents and families should, however, confirm current staffing levels, medication-management protocols, visitation rules, and the condition of specific rooms (air-conditioning and restroom access) during a tour. Clarify discharge-planning communication pathways and ask about recent renovations or plans for facility upgrades if long-term residency is being considered. Doing so will help align expectations with the facility’s heterogeneous strengths and weaknesses.

About Crestfield Rehabilitation Center & Fenwood Manor

Crestfield Rehabilitation Center & Fenwood Manor sits about 2.5 miles outside Manchester, Connecticut, and has 155 beds for residents who need short-term rehab, long-term care, skilled nursing, or hospice services, and the building itself is managed by Athena Health Care Systems, a for-profit company. The community accepts Medicare and Medicaid, provides care for people with vascular dementia, and offers studio, semi-private, and companion-style rooms for various living arrangements. Crestfield specializes in both physical and emotional support, focusing mainly on skilled nursing, and residents get access to physical, occupational, and speech therapy, as well as wound care, tracheotomy care, cardiac therapy, IV antibiotics, pain management, and other medical needs-these services help people recover from illness or injury or manage ongoing medical issues. Residents find several therapy programs, including inpatient and outpatient rehab, nutritional counseling, and recreational therapy, along with nursing, respite care, and long-term health management aimed at keeping everyone safe, comfortable, and as independent as possible, and you'll find features to help with comfort and security like amenities for daily living and specialized care units. The center scored a 3-star rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services but at times received 5 stars, and US News recognized Crestfield as a best nursing facility for 2021-22, plus their overall score is 5.7 out of 10, making them the fifth highest rated community in Manchester and placing them among Connecticut's top 50 nursing homes by some measures. Registered and medical staff members stay on site to assist with medication management, respiratory support, and catheter care, and the place has a reputation for cleanliness and kind staff, though the facility lacks both a resident council and a family council and does not operate as a Continuing Care Retirement Community. Crestfield is intended to help about 58,248 people in the Manchester area and is set up as a convalescent and rehabilitation home, but due to financial trouble, high repair costs, and rising staffing challenges, Crestfield filed a petition with the state Department of Social Services to close around February 5, 2024, and staff are working to transfer residents safely while employees get job assistance and support during the closure process.
