    Warm, attentive staff; immaculate facility

I placed my mom at Greystone and have been very pleased - the staff are warm, respectful and attentive, know her routine, and handle medical needs (including close diabetes monitoring and appointments) like caring professionals. The grounds and rooms are immaculate, the food is excellent, there are plenty of activities, and administration is helpful; it's given our family real peace of mind and I'd recommend checking it out.

    Summary of reviews

Greystone is described by many families as a warm, home-like retirement setting with a strong emphasis on personal attention and relationship-based care. Positive accounts highlight compassionate staff who know residents’ routines, coordination of outside medical appointments, attentive chronic-condition monitoring (for example diabetes care), and teamwork that families find reassuring. The facility’s grounds and common areas are frequently characterized as attractive and park-like, and many residents and visitors praise the cleanliness of living spaces and the quality of daily and holiday meals.

Care quality and staff behavior are central strengths for a number of families: reviewers describe respectful, dignified interactions, staff who are familiar with individual needs, and staff members who go beyond expectations to support residents. There are reports of meaningful dementia-care approaches and long-term positive outcomes for residents with cognitive impairment. At the same time, other accounts describe staffing shortages and episodes of insufficient assistance that led to care transfers or changes in placement; these point to variability in day-to-day staffing levels and task coverage.

Dining and activities are another mixed area. Several reviewers praise high-quality meals and special-event menus, and many residents appreciate the social opportunities and new friendships formed through activities. Conversely, other accounts identify inconsistent meal quality and limited activity offerings at times, suggesting that dining experience and program delivery can vary across days or cohorts of residents.

Facility condition is generally noted as pleasant, with well-tended landscaping and an inviting interior. However, some families raise concerns about maintenance and sanitation inconsistencies (for example, exterior maintenance issues such as driveway conditions), and there are explicit concerns about property security—particularly surveillance and safeguards for residents with dementia. There are also isolated but serious concerns following a resident’s disappearance and death; these accounts underline the importance of clarifying safety protocols and monitoring practices for cognitively impaired residents.

Management and organizational culture receive mixed commentary. Some families describe an engaged, community-minded owner and a kind, helpful administrator; others report that complaints were not always addressed and that staff sometimes felt undervalued. These contrasts suggest possible variability in leadership responsiveness, staff morale, and how operational challenges are escalated and resolved.

Overall, many long-term residents and their families speak highly of Greystone’s compassionate staff, homelike environment, and attractive grounds. Prospective residents and decision-makers should balance those strengths against the documented variability in meal quality, staffing consistency, maintenance, security practices, and complaint-resolution. A recommended next step for families would be an in-person visit that focuses questions on current staffing levels, dementia-safety protocols and surveillance, activity schedules, meal menus and consistency, maintenance plans, and the facility’s process for handling family concerns.

    About Greystone Retirement Home

Greystone Retirement Home sits on ten peaceful acres in Portland, Connecticut, where you'll find seniors living in a place that's licensed by the State of Connecticut as a Residential Care Home, sometimes called a boarding home, rest home, or personal care home, and the staff do their best to provide a safe setting with help for daily needs, companionship, and comfort, whether someone needs independent living, assisted living, memory care, or help because of Alzheimer's disease, and you see that the leadership team, who have been running things since 1953 and are family-owned and operated, care about keeping the place clean and making sure everyone feels respected and at home without discrimination based on race, color, creed, age, handicap, , preference, or where someone's from. The grounds are calm, the rooms offer choices between private and shared, and there's always staff close by, trained to help with bathing, meals, medication, or just getting around, while the home also tries to make things easier for the residents by letting folks download their application forms, book guided or online tours, and look over the place before moving in. Meals are provided in a dining area where relatives and friends can sit and eat with residents, and there's a beautician onsite, indoor spaces to gather, structured programs for social and educational activities, and organized events to help people make friends and keep active, so residents can keep a sense of their own independence for as long as possible without risking their safety. Greystone is a proud member of the National Association of Residential Care Facilities and was even named National Residential Care Home of the Year, plus it's easy to get to places like grocery stores, pharmacies, coffee shops, and health care close by. The focus always stays on helping seniors feel less isolated and more empowered, so they can keep their dignity as they get older, and the care plans are adjusted for each person, whether someone wants more privacy, a family-like environment, or just to join in the social events and daily activities that are always happening, while devotional services are offered offsite. New residents can move in as rooms become available, and every bit of informational and promotional content for Greystone is protected by copyright laws.
