    Caring staff and excellent rehab

I transferred my dad here and I'm very pleased - the staff are genuinely caring, professional, and attentive, and the nursing and OT/PT rehab made a big difference in his recovery. The facility is clean and organized, meals are tasty and balanced, and responses to needs are prompt and personalized. I'm grateful for the excellent care and would highly recommend this place.

    Summary of reviews

Reviewers present a mixed but instructive portrait of Portland Care & Rehabilitation Centre. The strongest and most consistent praise centers on short-term rehabilitation and direct caregiving: reviewers describe skilled, attentive nursing and therapy teams, frequent therapy sessions (including twice-daily OT/PT), effective respiratory training, and rapid nurse-call responses. Multiple accounts emphasize individualized, patient-centered approaches and positive interactions with residents who have dementia. The facility's smaller size is often framed positively, contributing to a family-oriented atmosphere and close staff–resident relationships.

Dining and activities are frequently cited as strengths. Several reviewers noted balanced meals with good portions, made-to-order breakfasts, and a range of engaging activities (bingo, cards, trivia, group games) plus access to outdoor time and regular on-site religious services. Cleanliness and well-maintained common areas are highlighted in many positive assessments, and families frequently attribute recovery progress to the therapy department and direct-care staff.

However, there are recurring operational concerns that prospective families should evaluate. Long-term care staffing levels and consistency appear to be weaker than the facility's short-term rehab strengths: reviewers describe variability in how promptly personal-care tasks and meal assistance are provided. Reports about staff conduct and communication are mixed, indicating variability in professionalism and tone among employees. Administrative issues are also noted, including inconsistent follow-up on clinical matters and questions about accountability and HR practices; these items translate into a perception of uneven management oversight in some cases.

Facility condition and suitability are additional areas to weigh. The building and furnishings are described as dated and in need of updates; while many common areas are maintained cleanly, other reviewers raised odor and sanitation concerns, indicating inconsistency in environmental controls. Several families recommended the center for short-term rehabilitation stays but expressed reservations about its long-term care suitability until staffing, facility updates, and administrative processes are more consistently addressed.

In summary, Portland Care & Rehabilitation Centre demonstrates clear strengths in rehabilitation outcomes, therapy services, and hands-on nursing care within a smaller, community-oriented setting. At the same time, there are notable patterns around inconsistent staffing for long-term needs, variable administrative responsiveness, and facility-age issues that prospective residents and families should discuss directly with leadership. Recommended pre-admission questions include current long-term staffing ratios, physician coverage and follow-up processes, environmental-cleanliness audits, activity schedule consistency, and HR/employee-retention practices to ensure alignment with family expectations.

About Portland Care & Rehabilitation Centre Inc

Portland Care & Rehabilitation Centre Inc sits in Portland, Connecticut, and has served families since 1967 as a family-owned nursing home, and folks seem to know it for its friendly people and welcoming feeling right when you walk in the door, though sometimes some information's been hard to get to because of a server error, which can happen anywhere these days, but you can still find the place listed as a senior living community by A Place For Mom and see star ratings and community reviews, plus it's received honors like the Best of Senior Living and All-Star awards for quality care and good activities, and it's got a solid Medicare.gov rating of 5 stars, which many folks notice, and that happens for reasons like how the facility keeps 24-hour nursing and personal care for people with physical or mental health needs, and how the staff often does extra training and checks to stay sharp and up-to-date with how they do things, so folks in both short-term and long-term care, including a separate short-term rehab wing and two long-term skilled nursing units-with 65 beds in total-get support that respects their dignity and works to keep their independence alive, and meals come with decent ingredients aimed at health, while dining stays a social thing, which helps, and residents get physical, occupational, and speech-language therapy, plus outpatient therapy for those who need it, and the extended care includes oversight by nursing and clinical care managers, which adds a bit of thoroughness, and it all fits together because the place tries to act like a home away from home without losing the feeling of comfort and safety, and the staff, who live nearby, are taught to pay attention to what each person needs, helping support independence, social, physical, and spiritual well-being for people in every part of the building, which sticks close to their idea of giving "Care Beyond Compare," and for families, there's expert guidance and resources for long-term care and caregiving, steady as can be.
