    Clean, caring staff; verify memory-care

I moved my mom into Brookdale West Hartford and overall I'm pleased: the building is very clean, bright and homey, staff are friendly, responsive and genuinely caring, and there are lots of activities and a pleasant dining room. Our renovated studio had a large bathroom, kitchenette and good storage; loaner furniture and nice common spaces (patio, sunroom, music) helped the transition. Memory care impressions were mixed - some attentive staff and good programs, but I heard occasional lapses in monitoring and engagement. Communication and management were usually helpful and COVID response was strong, but staffing shortages, occasional poor follow-through and high/unclear pricing are real caveats. I'd recommend it for cleanliness, care and activities, but insist on clear pricing and probe memory-care staffing before deciding.

    About Brookdale West Hartford

Brookdale West Hartford sits in a quiet suburb of West Hartford, Connecticut, in a three-story building with over 70 apartments for seniors, and you can pick from studio, one-bedroom, or two-bedroom homes with sizes from 264 to 704 square feet, each with a private or companion suite and full bath, and the building allows pets, so residents can keep a furry friend if they want. The community offers assisted living, memory care for Alzheimer's and dementia, skilled nursing, independent living, respite care, and even at-home care, so when health needs change, people can usually stay in the same place and get extra help if they need it. There's a modern approach to assisted living and the staff provides compassionate care, day and night, and they have a unique program called Optimum Life®. The care team helps with daily needs like bathing, dressing, medication, and there's always someone available for emergencies.

Brookdale West Hartford has a friendly and homelike atmosphere, offering things like three meals a day with several menu options, restaurant-style dining, and an on-site bistro, which some people really enjoy because they don't have to cook if they don't want to. There are wide common spaces like a community living room, sunroom, card and game rooms, activity room, and a resident lounge where folks gather for conversation, cards, or just some quiet time, and there's a courtyard for relaxing walks, as well as outdoor areas set up for strolling and sitting. Residents can join in on structured activities, social events, outings, and faith services, both onsite and offsite, so it never feels lonely. The community provides extras like a beauty salon, guest suites, elevators, wheelchair-accessible showers, internet/Wi-Fi, housekeeping, laundry, and transportation services for shopping, errands, or appointments.

Services cover independent living for active adults, assisted living with help for daily tasks, specialized memory care with an emphasis on safety and personal routines, and skilled nursing for medical needs, all supported by personalized care plans the staff develops with each person to fit what they need as time goes on. There's also counseling and access to psychiatrists and psychoanalysts, along with support for families and tools for planning or caregiving. People can pay using various methods like selling a house, using insurance, or veteran's benefits, and the community includes utilities and basic TV and phone hook-ups, though monthly service is extra. Brookdale West Hartford values letting each person do as much for themselves as they can, and there's a real effort to honor everyone's role in the community, whether it's through joining activities, helping others, or just being part of daily life. The community also features pet therapy, signature programs, Brookdale blogs for extra support, and a focus on health and safety, so folks and their families can feel at ease as needs change over time.

    About Brookdale

Brookdale Senior Living Inc. (NYSE: BKD) is the largest senior living operator in the United States, managing over 640 communities with capacity for approximately 59,000 residents across 41 states and employing around 36,000 associates. Founded in 1978 and publicly traded since 2005, Brookdale solidified its market leadership through major acquisitions including American Retirement Corporation (2006) and Emeritus Senior Living (2014), making it the only national full-spectrum senior living company. Headquartered in Nashville, Tennessee, Brookdale has topped the American Seniors Housing Association's ASHA 50 list and Argentum's largest providers list for multiple consecutive years.

The company's comprehensive care continuum includes independent living, assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing, and continuing care retirement communities (CCRCs). Brookdale's signature Clare Bridge program, developed over 30 years ago by dementia-care experts, provides specialized Alzheimer's and dementia care through two distinct levels: Clare Bridge communities for comprehensive memory support and the Clare Bridge Solace program for advanced-stage dementia residents. The program is recognized by the Alzheimer's Association® for incorporating evidence-based Dementia Care Practice Recommendations and features secure environments, enclosed courtyards, Daily Path programming with six structured activities daily, and the InTouch technology platform offering personalized brain-stimulating games and therapeutic content.

Brookdale's holistic Optimum Life® wellness approach balances six dimensions—Purposeful, Physical, Emotional, Social, Spiritual, and Intellectual—implemented through signature programs including B-Fit (eight exercise class options), Brain Fit (mental fitness workouts), My Life Story (resident storytelling), EngagementPlus (interest-based connections), Growing Together (collaborative learning), and The Ageless Spirit (kindness and gratitude practices). The Embrace Family Partnership provides caregiver education and support for families of memory care residents.

The company's Brookdale HealthPlus® care coordination model, winner of the 2024 Argentum Best of the Best Award placing it among the top 1% of operators, is a technology-enabled healthcare service featuring dedicated RN Care Managers who proactively manage residents' health, coordinate care transitions, and help prevent avoidable hospitalizations. Communities using HealthPlus report 78% fewer urgent care visits, 36% fewer hospitalizations, and 63% more completed annual wellness visits. The Personal Solutions program delivers hygiene products, medications, and daily necessities directly to residents' doors with discreet packaging and monthly billing convenience.

Following a strategic divestiture of its home health and hospice operations to HCA Healthcare (completed December 2023), Brookdale now focuses exclusively on senior living operations while maintaining its position as the industry's largest operator, committed to its mission of enriching lives with compassion, respect, excellence, and integrity.
