    Excellent care in renovated facility

I was very pleased with the newly renovated, hotel-like facility - spotless rooms, beautiful grounds and comfortable common areas. The nursing, wound care and rehab teams were exceptional and helped my mom regain mobility; admissions and admin made the transition smooth. Staff were professional, friendly and attentive, and meals were good. I would happily recommend this well-run place.

    Summary of reviews

Overall impressions of Highwood are mixed but point to several clear strengths alongside operational inconsistencies. Many families and former residents praised the facility for its cleanliness, attractive grounds and common areas, and a generally well-maintained interior. Admissions and financial coordination are commonly described as helpful and informative, and entrances are noted as secure with attentive attendants. The facility’s rehabilitation services receive frequent commendation for knowledgeable, encouraging therapists and measurable functional gains in mobility and independence.

Clinical care elicits divergent comments. Numerous reviewers highlight compassionate, attentive nursing staff and effective wound-care support in specific cases; however, others describe variability in clinical consistency between shifts or units. Recurring operational concerns include delays in medication delivery and availability, slow responses to call lights or requests for assistance, and occasional gaps in clinical follow-through. These issues appear to reflect uneven staffing or process reliability rather than uniform clinical failure.

Dining and activities are generally regarded positively. The dining rooms and seating areas are described as tasteful and comfortable, with many families calling meals adequate to good; activity programming and the activity rooms receive positive notice for engagement. That said, there are notes about inconsistent meal assistance and occasional meal-service continuity problems, which can affect residents who require help eating.

Facility management and customer service show variability. Several reviewers single out individual managers and admission staff for exemplary, proactive service and smooth admissions processes. Conversely, there are recurring concerns about reception-staff demeanor, unresponsive upper management or phone communications, and isolated incidents of poor tone or insufficient empathy toward families. These contrasting reports suggest leadership and frontline customer-service quality may differ between teams or shifts.

Notable patterns for prospective residents and families: the facility demonstrates clear strengths in rehabilitation, a generally clean environment, and many committed clinical staff members. At the same time, there are consistent operational themes—call-response delays, medication and clinical-consistency gaps, therapy-scheduling problems, and occasional sanitation/odor concerns—that merit direct inquiry during a visit. Families may wish to observe staffing during different shifts, ask about medication-delivery protocols, review how feeding assistance and end-of-life responsiveness are handled, and speak with admissions about room allocation and anticipated room size to ensure the facility’s daily operations align with their expectations.

    About ALIYA of Highwood

ALIYA of Highwood sits at 50 Pleasant Avenue in Highwood, Illinois, and runs as a for-profit, corporate-owned nursing home that's part of the ALIYA Healthcare network, and it has 104 beds, so it's what you'd call a medium-sized place, and the facility participates in both Medicare and Medicaid which helps with expenses for many, and you'll find care here that covers both long-term needs and short-term rehabilitation, and while the short-term rehab has a Below Average rating according to some reports, the long-term care gets rated as High Performing, so there's a bit of a range there folks should weigh. Experienced nurses and staff provide 24-hour care, handling everything from help with bathing, dressing, grooming, going to the bathroom, wound care, medication management, and then also working with diabetic injections, IV therapy, and even post-surgery rehab. The therapy team runs programs for physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, cardiac rehab, and rehab after joint replacement or stroke, while those needing more focused help-like respiratory care, tracheostomy care, and isolation care-can usually get what they need, plus they offer special dementia, Alzheimer's, hospice, respite, and palliative care. If someone's recovering from surgery, or needs assistance with wound care or medication management, the staff handles that with individualized plans, making sure each resident gets what's best for them, which is easy to appreciate, and they even have a Gold Star of Excellence from The Joint Commission for National Quality Approval, which some folks might find reassuring. Everyone lives in private or semi-private rooms and can join in on activities in the arts and crafts room, play cards and games, watch movies, and go on community outings, or maybe enjoy a good book in the elegant library or catch up on the daily paper. Meals are full-service and diet-friendly, and the housekeeping team keeps things in order, and there's even a full-service salon for hair care. The lounges and organized social events help with making friends, and the staff work to offer a homelike environment, focusing on respect, dignity, and personal attention. ALIYA of Highwood belongs to the Collaborative Healthcare Urgency Group, or CHUG™, which connects it with others for urgent healthcare support and information. The whole place is set up to help people recover comfortably and keep some confidence, with the facility's commitment to supporting both the physical and emotional well-being of residents making it worth a look for families thinking about care options in the area.
