    Clean, bright community; caring staff

I'm very pleased with Sunrise - the building is spotless and bright, apartments are spacious and homey, and the grounds and common spaces are lovely. The caring, knowledgeable team (Noel was especially helpful) provides attentive medical and daily care, great dining, lots of engaging activities, and clear communication with families. My loved one is thriving and happy here; I highly recommend it.

    Summary of reviews

Overall impression: Reviewers present a mixed but detailed picture. Many families and residents praise the facility's modern, well-kept environment, hospitality-style dining, and a broadly compassionate care culture. At the same time, a set of operational weaknesses recurs across the feedback, most notably inconsistent staffing patterns, language barriers on the floor, and variability in clinical and administrative follow-through.

Care and staff: The facility is frequently described as having a caring, attentive staff who build rapport with residents and families; communication channels (phone, social media, periodic virtual meetings) are highlighted as a strength. Several accounts emphasize strong nursing and therapy support, dignity-preserving caregiving in memory and assisted living units, and long-term positive relationships with individual caregivers. Counterbalancing that, reviewers note inconsistent staffing levels and a heavy reliance on agency staff, which correlates with delayed assistance for routine tasks, occasional lapses in item management (lost dentures, clothing), and uneven onboarding that affects day-to-day reliability. There are also repeated mentions of language barriers during meal times and other interactions that can affect resident comfort and communication.

Dining and activities: Dining receives consistently positive comments for quality, presentation, and a menu-driven, restaurant-like service with options and specials; families appreciate customizable meals and a bistro/snack option. Activity programming is often described as robust and resident-centered, with a creative calendar and plenty of social opportunities, outings, and therapies. However, several reports indicate uneven activity coverage in the memory-care unit specifically, with insufficient staff dedicated to keeping residents actively engaged at all times; this pattern appears linked to staffing shortages.

Facilities and amenities: The building’s newness, cleanliness, and bright, well-laid-out apartments and common spaces are frequently praised. On-site amenities — salon, fitness center, courtyard, and therapy areas — contribute to a generally positive physical environment. Housekeeping and laundry quality show variability in execution; occasional complaints about mixed laundry, missed tasks, and inconsistent housekeeping schedules suggest process gaps rather than facility design issues.

Management and operations: Many families commend transparent communication during infection-control events and appreciate proactive outreach. Conversely, reviews describe operational confusion tied to ownership or leadership transitions, paperwork and orientation gaps at move-in, and transportation-service interruptions (for example, an unfilled bus-driver vacancy). Administrative issues appear in billing and refund follow-through, including a few serious concerns about billing after a resident’s death. Clinical-safety themes surface as well: some families raised concerns about medication-management practices, transfer and fall-prevention processes, and at least one set of serious allegations involving misrepresentation of one-to-one care and inappropriate transfer handling. Those items stand out from the broader praise and warrant specific follow-up by prospective families.

Notable patterns and advice for prospective families: Strengths center on environment, dining, and the warmth of many caregivers; the memory-care unit has dedicated programming and receives positive endorsements from several families. The primary operational risks are staffing consistency, communication in high-staff-turnover situations, and administrative reliability. Prospective residents and families should tour at multiple times of day to observe staffing and mealtime dynamics, ask about agency-staff reliance and language capabilities, review medication- and transfer-safety protocols, and get clear written commitments on transportation, billing, and refund policies. These targeted inquiries will help determine whether the facility’s strong environment and programming align with an individual resident’s clinical and day-to-day needs.

    About Sunrise of Prospect Heights

Sunrise of Prospect Heights sits as a three-story senior living community that's now under new management by Sunrise Senior Living since June 2024, offering assisted living, memory care-including the Reminiscence Program and Terrace Club-independent living, short-term stays, and hospice care. The staff includes reliable team members with specialized training, a part-time nurse, and caregivers who are there 24/7 to help with bathing, dressing, grooming, medication, and daily living tasks. The place allows pets and even adopts dogs as companions for residents. Apartments come as studios, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom layouts with walk-through closets, washer-dryer units, kitchenettes with full-size fridges and microwaves, and granite countertops, while suites are also available. Residents use bright, cozy rooms and enjoy clean, updated spaces with walk-in showers.

The VIVA! Legacy program helps residents shape their quality of life and end-of-life wishes. Housekeeping, laundry, and linen services are done regularly, so residents have less to worry about. Residents can pay by credit card or check for rent and care fees, and guest parking or family parking is available in several parking lots.

There are many things to do each day, like board games, hobbies, movies in the Willow movie theater, outings, music, gardening in outdoor raised beds, yoga, arts and crafts, tabletop games, Victory Gardens for personal vegetables, and walks through courtyards with paths and lush gardens. The community calendar is filled with events covering the 6 Elements of a Fulfilling Lifestyle, and there are special programs such as ArtPath for art instruction, Lifelong Learning with adult education and college-level classes, Good Vibrations drumming circles for exercise and fun, and the Viva! World Tour that lets residents explore exotic cultures and practice languages at home.

Dining is restaurant-style, with seasonal meals planned by chefs and meal planners, available both in communal dining rooms and by room service, with meals for guests too. Residents can go to the on-site coffee shop or bistro, use a demonstration kitchen, and find snacks easily. For activity, there's a modern fitness center with programs that include stretching, weight checks, blood pressure checks, and consultations, plus a business center and a library with a technology hub for learning.

Residents get rides to shopping and outings, and the community provides general transportation options. To stay well, there are pharmacy services, medication management, health counseling, therapy coordination, physical and occupational therapy, in-home health care, and regular nurse consultations, along with psychiatric and companion care. Dignity Home Care and hospice services support health needs as they arise. Memory care residents are cared for in safe environments meant to prevent wandering and confusion, while rehabilitation and disease prevention counseling are offered to all who need them.

The community holds religious services and welcomes people from all walks of life, using mostly English but offering a range of languages. The building has a media center, theaters, a gazebo, demonstration kitchen, business center, salons and spa for personal care, art rooms, patios, common rooms with cable TV, computer rooms, and several social areas for relaxation. The outdoor areas have garden spaces and courtyards where people gather or stroll.

Sunrise of Prospect Heights stands as a warm, inviting place where residents get support as needed and follow daily routines suited to their abilities, with memory care and assisted living tailored to each person. Meals are nutritious, the rooms are comfortable, social events are lively, and the mission is to give seniors a vibrant, healthy, and fulfilling lifestyle in a setting where family and friends feel welcome. The staff stays kind, joyful, and helpful, showing a clear commitment to residents' well-being and comfort while focusing on simple daily joys and independence.
