    Safe, spotless, caring, engaging community

I placed my loved one here and am very pleased. The facility is beautiful and spotless, staff are kind and go above and beyond (nurses, kitchen, activities and administration), and there are plentiful, family-friendly events, worship/Bible study, and great meals. She feels safe, at home, engaged, and I'd highly recommend taking a tour.

    Summary of reviews

Brentwood at Elkhart presents as a largely home-like assisted living community with several strengths families commonly cite. The facility is described as clean, bright and well maintained, with attractive exterior landscaping, an inviting atrium and multiple comfortable common areas (library, TV room, family dining room). Accessible apartment features such as walk-in showers and lifeline devices, an outdoor garden and walking paths, and a pet-friendly policy contribute to a residence-oriented environment rather than an institutional feel.

Care and staff interaction are frequently praised: reviewers note knowledgeable nursing and caregiving staff, long-tenured team members, personalized check-ins, and staff who actively engage residents in conversation and activities. Nursing staff and some leaders receive positive comments for proactive medical communication and hands-on clinical support; families also cite examples of physical-therapy progress and diabetes support. At the same time, there are recurring concerns that require attention — particularly inconsistent communication between staff and families, occasional lapses in clinical coordination (including medication and catheter-management practices), and variability in staff professionalism and supervisory follow-through.

Dining and programming are clear strengths in many accounts. The community offers family-style dining with attention to presentation, a snack area with beverages, flexible menu choices at times, and frequent communal meals and celebrations. However, meal quality and nutrition management are uneven across reports: while some families praise the kitchen and food, others describe burned or poorly prepared items and limited options for therapeutic or diabetic diets. Prospective residents should clarify current menu policies and accommodations for special diets during a tour.

Activities are robust and varied, with regular social, recreational and therapeutic programming — bingo, exercise classes, movie nights, off-site field trips, music events, and family-oriented celebrations are mentioned repeatedly. Reviewers emphasize an active community atmosphere and staff willingness to develop new activities based on resident interest.

Management and operational patterns show mixed signals. Several families applaud specific leadership and coordinators for responsiveness, while others report management turnover, pricing increases without commensurate care changes, and concerns about transparency around care level at admission. There are also reports indicating the facility does not provide a full skilled-nursing continuum on-site, which makes close coordination with external nursing units or hospitals necessary for residents with higher acuity. A small subset of reports describe serious care-coordination failures and delays in emergency response; these are flagged in reviews as concerning and merit direct inquiry during decision-making.

Overall, Brentwood appears well suited for residents seeking an engaging, home-like assisted living environment with active programming and compassionate caregivers. Families considering the community should verify current staffing levels, ask for specifics about medication and catheter protocols, confirm special-diet accommodations, understand the facility’s transfer/acute-care relationships, and obtain clear, written information about fee increases and what services are included. An in-person tour and direct conversations with nursing leadership and the activities/kitchen staff will help prospective residents assess fit and operational consistency.
