Portage Manor, also known as Portage Manor Health Care Facility, was a historic assisted living and healthcare facility in South Bend, Indiana, that permanently closed in 2024 and is slated for destruction. The large red brick main building was built in 1906 in the Classical Revival style, sits on 144 acres, and features a two-story pedimented portico with four Ionic columns, a white-pillared porch, and a circular driveway, giving it an impressive look right from the start, and there's also a brick smokehouse and two wings added to the main building. It first served as a county home for the elderly and the indigent, and later provided assisted living and Alzheimer's care for up to 144 residents, with most having private living spaces or bedrooms, some with kitchenettes, and common areas throughout for visiting, meals, and group activities. Chefs and meal planners focused on nutritious, quality meals, and staff provided personal support with daily living, like help with bathing, dressing, medication, and specialized care for diabetes and incontinence, making sure residents felt looked after. The atmosphere was friendly and home-like, with devotionals, comfortable rooms, chances for planning support, and staff who said the real heart of Portage Manor was the care they gave. The grounds and unique architecture-listed on the National Register of Historic Places-made it a landmark, and people could take tours to meet staff, see the floor plans, and get a sense of the community, and while payment options were available, you'd need to ask for details. Even though the building's history and setting were a big part of what stood out, residents said it was the people inside who made it a comfortable place to live, though now it sadly stands closed after more than a century of service.
