    Loving professional care; highly recommended

I'm very pleased with the care here - staff are loving, professional, and routinely go above and beyond. Nurses, therapists and aides provided excellent rehab and compassionate daily support, communication was proactive, PPE/safety and family contact were handled well, and activities keep residents engaged. Management (Dan, Marissa and team) is responsive; my loved one is safe, clean and comfortable, and I'd confidently recommend this community.

    Summary of reviews

Overall impression: Reviews for Chesapeake Shores Nursing Center are highly polarized, with numerous accounts of excellent clinical rehabilitation, caring frontline staff, and an active activities program coexisting alongside repeated operational concerns. Positive experiences frequently highlight successful therapy-driven recoveries, attentive nurses and aides, and an engaged administration; conversely, negative accounts emphasize inconsistent responsiveness, cleanliness and maintenance issues, and variability in clinical follow-through.

Care quality: Therapy and rehabilitation are consistently identified as strengths—many families describe measurable functional improvements and strong coordination from physical, occupational, and speech therapists. Nursing and aide staff are often characterized as compassionate and attentive, and several reviewers singled out individual employees and unit managers for their responsiveness. However, there are recurrent concerns about delayed responses to basic needs, inconsistencies in medication administration and documentation, and delays in incontinence care and timely repositioning. Clinical competency appears variable between shifts and individuals, and several reviewers advised active family advocacy to ensure prescribed care is carried out.

Staff and management: The facility receives frequent praise for individual staff members and for unit-level leaders who are accessible and proactive; an open-door administrative approach is also mentioned positively. At the same time, reviewers describe staffing shortages and thin coverage—particularly at night—which contribute to slower response times and uneven care. Communication with families is described as effective in many cases but inconsistent overall; some families reported clear daily updates, while others described difficulty reaching staff or getting timely information about clinical changes.

Dining and activities: The activities program and life-enrichment offerings are a clear strength, with examples of engaging group events, outings, religious groups, and holiday programming. Therapy-led activities and individualized engagement for residents with dementia receive positive mention. Dining receives mixed feedback: kitchen and dietary staff are praised for accommodations and individual attention, yet some families noted cold meals or inconsistent meal quality and service timing.

Facilities and environment: The building is described as older and in need of maintenance and upgrades in places. Cleanliness and odor-control issues in common areas and corridors are repeatedly raised as a concern; at the same time, many reviewers described clean, comfortable rooms and well-kept units. Room configuration is a noted limitation for some families—small shared rooms and limited privacy are mentioned. Housekeeping consistency and overall facility upkeep are areas families recommend inspecting during a visit.

Notable patterns and recommendations: The most consistent positive themes are strong rehabilitation outcomes, engaged activities, and many individual staff members who provide compassionate care. The most consistent negative themes are inconsistent responsiveness, staffing variability across shifts (especially nights), gaps in medication and personal-care processes, and intermittent cleanliness/maintenance issues. Prospective residents and families should tour the facility during different shifts, observe care-team interactions and response times, ask about staffing ratios and night coverage, review medication-administration and incontinence-care protocols, confirm procedures for handling personal belongings, and speak with therapy staff about expected rehabilitation goals. These steps can help reconcile the facility’s demonstrable clinical strengths with the operational limitations described by other families.

    About Chesapeake Shores Nursing Center

Chesapeake Shores Nursing Center sits over on Great Mills Road in Lexington Park, Maryland, run by Signature HealthCARE which has many centers across different states, and it's a nursing home that holds up to 113 residents in private or semi-private rooms, with the grounds laid out in a country spot close to St. Mary's City and the Patuxent Naval Base, which gives things a quiet, green setting. The staff there speak English, and they keep the doors open at all times, even on weekends and holidays, with care available 24 hours a day no matter what. Chesapeake Shores Nursing Center doesn't have a Family Council or a Resident Council at this time, but the staff work together in teams and aim to focus on comfort and health for everyone living there, with doctors on-site 1-2 days a week and nurse practitioners or physician assistants showing up 3-4 days each week to help check on residents and make medical care plans that fit each person.

The center's for-profit and offers both short-term and long-term skilled nursing care, covering things like post-acute care, rehabilitation for different needs, speech and physical therapy, occupational therapy, wound care, dentistry, IV antibiotics, stroke recovery, palliative care, and even some more specialized care such as tracheotomy, podiatry, cardiac and orthopedic therapy, diabetes management, nutrition counseling, pharmacy support, optometry, and recreational therapy, plus hospice and respite care for families who need a break. Daily life there's set up for comfort, with regular room cleaning, fresh laundry, and an onsite van for getting folks to appointments or outings, plus meals served three times a day, snacks in between, and staff who are careful about nutrition and dietary needs. Chesapeake Shores gives each patient quite a bit of time with registered staff and medical personnel, and they report higher RN staffing than the national average.

As far as inspections go, this facility's seen steady grades of A+, with a top-five-star health inspection rating, and there haven't been any major deficiencies, federal fines, or payment denials in years, though there's a three-star rating for staffing and quality measures combined, and the center does have a slightly higher than average rate of antipsychotic use and physical restraints, which some people might want to think about. Some quality highlights include a near perfect record of short-stay residents getting their flu and pneumonia vaccines, a very low number of pressure ulcers developing, and injury rates from falls or urinary tract infections are kept below many other places, though more than half of low-risk long-term residents are reported as incontinent, and some experience moderate to severe pain.

Chesapeake Shores Nursing Center keeps a full activity calendar, so there's things like bingo, book club, religious services, outdoor gatherings, and movie nights, all meant to help keep people social and active. There's no information about a Family or Resident Council for advocating at the facility, and right now, the center isn't taking new patients. The nursing center accepts Medicare and Medicaid, has a reputation for compassion, and emphasizes a home-like setting, but like anywhere, it's wise to consider every detail and check that the services fit what's needed.
