    Professional compassionate staff, highly recommend

I placed my mother here and I'm very pleased - professional, compassionate staff who treated her like family, helpful social workers and admissions, and smooth transportation/therapy support. The facility is bright, very clean, well-appointed and welcoming, staff are kind, responsive and motivated, and management is engaged; I would highly recommend.

    Summary of reviews

Overall impressions of Oakwood Estates Nursing & Rehab are mixed, with a clear split between consistently noted operational strengths and recurring operational weaknesses. Many families and visitors describe the facility’s interior as recently remodeled, attractively furnished, and generally well maintained; front-of-house staff such as receptionists and certain nursing teams receive frequent praise for professionalism, kindness, and dignity-focused interactions. The facility’s location, transportation assistance, and a visible owner/management presence are also cited as positives that support family engagement and resident access to services.

Care quality descriptions vary. Positive accounts emphasize compassionate nursing, an interdisciplinary rehabilitation focus, and supportive social-work assistance that helped residents regain function or transition to home-like independence. Conversely, there are multiple accounts raising concerns about inconsistent care practices: delays in personal care activities, variable bathing routines, and uneven monitoring of residents with complex needs. Several families described important clinical and end-of-life worries that point to gaps in escalation and clinical-incident response in certain cases.

Staffing and communication emerge as central themes. While some staff are described as motivated and engaged, others are characterized as unprofessional or dismissive; reviewers also report frequent staff turnover and periods of understaffing that correlate with perceived declines in responsiveness and continuity of care. Communication with families and external parties is uneven—examples include delayed callbacks, billing and vendor-payment problems, and limited or poorly communicated restrictions during infection-control events. These administrative weaknesses can undermine trust even when direct-care staff perform well.

Facility and environmental observations are similarly divided. The common areas and recently updated wings are praised for cleanliness and décor, but other units or rooms are described as having maintenance shortcomings such as unreliable climate control, visible sanitation concerns, and older patient-handling equipment (manual lifts, crank beds). Reviewers also raised concerns about security and tracking of resident belongings and occasional lapses in access-control and outbreak notification practices.

Notable patterns for prospective residents and families: expect variability. The facility demonstrates the capacity for high-quality, compassionate care and an attractive physical environment in many areas, combined with administrative engagement from ownership. At the same time, recurring operational weaknesses—particularly around staffing consistency, communication, maintenance reliability, personal-property safeguards, and sanitation/pest-control in some areas—warrant careful inquiry. Families touring the facility should observe staffing levels on the unit, ask about bathing and toileting schedules, review incident-response and visitation policies, confirm equipment and maintenance plans, and request documentation about billing and property safeguards before making placement decisions.

About Oakwood Estates Nursing & Rehab

Oakwood Estates Nursing & Rehab sits at 5303 Bermuda Dr in Normandy, Missouri, and serves as a medium-sized nursing home with 115 beds, working as a for-profit LLC, so there's a focus on both short-term rehab after hospital stays and long-term care for people who need more help every day, including those living with Alzheimer's disease or other kinds of dementia since there are secure areas to help prevent wandering, and activities designed to ease confusion. Folks here get nurse care for about two hours and three minutes daily, and that doesn't drop off on the weekends, which helps keep care steady. The facility's team helps with dressing, eating, moving around, medications, and making sure everybody can get physical, occupational, and speech therapies if that's needed to get back some independence, like moving, eating, or using the bathroom on their own, and everyone gets an individualized care plan, which gets checked on as their health changes. The place is known to maintain a safe, homelike environment with working call systems in bathrooms, exercises to keep people moving, and regular inspections to keep up food safety, infection control, accident prevention, and resident rights like privacy and self-determination.

The staff here works hard to keep things clean, safe, and welcoming, and they're known for being joyful, helpful, and kind, which does help the place feel friendly, as residents have said, and Oakwood Estates even got recognized with the Best of Senior Living award for its care and support. For meals, they offer restaurant-style dining, with meals planned by chefs and meal planners, including special diets for things like allergies or diabetes, and there's always nutritious food with options all day. The building's got private and semi-private rooms, each with their own bathrooms, air conditioning, Wi-Fi, cable TV, kitchenettes, and phones, as well as safety features like sprinkler systems and handicap accessibility. Housekeeping and laundry are taken care of, and there's help for bathing, dressing, grooming, wound care, and medication management, with pharmacists checking monthly for safe medication use and watching psychotropic medication use closely, preferring other approaches when possible.

Oakwood Estates accepts Medicaid and Medicare, plus long-term care insurance, and the prices run from about $3,500 up to $8,500 per month, depending on whether a resident chooses a semi-private or private room. There's 24-hour nursing and supervision, with support for getting up and down, moving around, and personal care. Residents who need dialysis get help, and annual flu vaccinations are given to keep people healthier. For social and mental wellbeing, there are daily activities - like community-sponsored or resident-run games, arts, and music programs - and common spaces including walking paths, gardens, a theater, fitness and wellness rooms, a library, arts rooms, and a dining hall. Extra amenities include a salon, guest parking, a community room, housekeeping, and move-in coordination.

The facility provides skilled nursing, memory care, assisted living, palliative and hospice care, respite stays for short-term relief, and help for both ambulatory and non-ambulatory residents, and the apartments are equipped to support people who need different levels of help. Medical services cover occupational therapy, wound care, podiatry, nurse visits, and more. There's transport for residents to appointments or group outings, and all rooms have emergency call systems for safety. There's a focus on infection prevention, and every resident's care plan gets updated as their needs change. Employment and accommodations at Oakwood Estates come with protections for gender identity and orientation under their policies. There's no specified information on pet policies, parking details, or internet features, and no list of interior accessibility details. Oakwood Estates has operated for years as an established facility and tries to keep a steady, reliable, and compassionate environment for every resident who needs skilled nursing or rehabilitation in the St. Louis, Missouri area.
