    Compassionate care for veteran spouse

I'm very pleased with the professional, empathetic medical team-doctors, nurses, CNAs-who treated my husband with respect and attentive, compassionate care. The facility is clean, comfortable, affordable, with good meals, activities, strong dementia and veteran-focused services, and regular family updates. I'm grateful for the wonderful staff and highly recommend this home for veterans and spouses.

    Summary of reviews

The review set for Paramus Veterans Memorial Home is highly mixed, with a clear split between families who praise the staff and services and others who raise operational and safety concerns. Positive comments frequently highlight compassionate caregiving, competent nursing and medical personnel, frequent family communication (including leadership updates), and a range of recreational opportunities and outings. Several reviews emphasize on-site practical supports such as assisted bathing, laundry, and three meals per day prepared by an active kitchen team, as well as veteran-focused programming and transportation to malls and appointments.

Care quality and staffing emerge as the most polarized areas. Many families describe attentive, respectful staff and strong clinical teams; simultaneously, a substantial number of accounts point to understaffing, heavy reliance on agency personnel (notably on weekends), delayed responses to call bells, and inconsistent clinical oversight. These operational weaknesses are associated with concerns about timely personal-care assistance, medication administration continuity, and fall/safety risk management. Communication with families is also inconsistent: some reviews note regular updates from leadership, while others report difficulty obtaining RN reports, language barriers on phone calls, and limited continuity of care.

Dining and activities are generally cited as program strengths, with multiple references to varied activities (music, bingo, table tennis, dances, garden outings), a well-used rec room, and regular trips. Meal quality receives mixed feedback: several reviews praise cooks and the dining staff, while others describe dissatisfaction with food quality and meal consistency. Laundry and room services are noted positively in many accounts, and rooms are often described as comfortable, though size and layout vary.

Facility condition and safety are recurring concerns. Reviewers reference an older building with dated furnishings, hospital-style rooms in some areas, shared restroom setups, and the need for remodeling in parts of the facility. Several reviews raise sanitation and odor concerns in specific areas and note sticky or poorly maintained floors. Accessibility and safety features are uneven; some families report limited grab bars or transfer supports and cite instances that suggest gaps in safe-mobility protocols. There are also serious individual claims about missing personal items and other conduct issues; these have been described as allegations and indicate a need to confirm property-security policies.

Management and admissions practices show both strengths and gaps. Some families appreciate consistent leadership communication and veteran-focused services, but others report restrictive eligibility criteria (veteran/spouse requirement), lengthy waits for admission decisions, and denialsโ€”particularly for residents with dementia or behavioral needs. Several reviews urge more compassionate handling of dementia and behavioral presentations, and others describe the need for families to advocate actively, especially on weekends.

Overall, prospective residents and families will find examples of strong, empathetic caregiving and active programming alongside documented concerns about staffing levels, facility maintenance, clinical continuity, and certain safety and security practices. When evaluating this facility, consider asking for current staffing ratios (including weekend coverage), medication-management protocols, dementia-care capability and admission criteria, recent infection-control and maintenance records, sample activity schedules, and procedures for securing resident belongings and reporting incidents.
