    Attentive staff, spotless, homey facility

I chose this recently renovated, beautiful building for my loved one and have been very pleased - spotless, warm and homey with a sunny porch, sitting/TV rooms and thoughtful common spaces. The staff (Gina, Brian and the team) are attentive, caring and available around the clock; they handle meds, daily meals, laundry and transportation reliably. It's small, family-like, close to church and the park, offers activities and excellent value on a limited budget. I'd happily recommend it.

    Summary of reviews

Overall impression: The Senior Residence at St Peter's is presented as a small, affordable, and well-kept residence with a strong emphasis on a home-like, family atmosphere. Many comments emphasize a recently renovated historic building with high ceilings, sun porches, and attractive common areas. Cleanliness and facility maintenance are repeatedly described as strengths, and the facility’s size (roughly twenty rooms) contributes to a sense of individualized attention and community rather than an institutional feel.

Care and staffing: Reviewers consistently describe staff and leadership as compassionate, responsive, and accessible. Named staff and directors were cited positively for hands-on management and personal familiarity with residents. The residence provides 24-hour staffing and medication-management services; however, the operational model appears oriented toward independent living with basic assistance rather than higher-acuity skilled nursing. Prospective residents with increasing medical needs should verify clinical capability and nursing availability before moving in.

Dining and food service: The facility provides three daily meals and reports of accommodating dietary needs and special holiday meals (for example, Thanksgiving) indicate an effort to personalize dining. Several accounts describe homemade, well-prepared food and attentive dining staff. At the same time, a number of comments point to inconsistent food quality or limited menu variety, so expectations for culinary range should be tempered and discussed during a tour.

Activities and social life: Common spaces include a library, activity room, game room, and exercise room, and organized outings such as mall trips and shows are offered. Reviewers characterize the atmosphere as relaxed and social, with staff-led activities. That said, activity programming is smaller in scale than what may be available at larger communities; families seeking an extensive or highly varied activity calendar should ask about current programming frequency and planned events.

Facilities and accommodations: The conversion from a former convent contributes to the building’s charm and smaller scale. Renovations, new bathrooms in parts of the building, and well-kept sun rooms are positive attributes. Major constraints are the generally small private-room footprints and, in some areas, communal bathrooms (several rooms share hall bathrooms). On-site laundry, weekly housekeeping, and utilities-inclusive arrangements are offered, which support an independent-living lifestyle. Parking space has been identified as limited in some accounts.

Management, value, and limitations: The residence is repeatedly described as an affordable option with strong value for families on a constrained budget. Management presence and responsiveness are highlighted as strengths. Important operational limitations include restricted clinical/assisted-care capacity beyond basic support, inconsistent group transportation for shopping (occasional absence of a dedicated bus), and the facility’s policy of not accepting Medicare. These traits make the community most suitable for residents seeking independent or lightly assisted living in a small, personal setting rather than for those requiring advanced medical or continuous nursing care.

Recommendation guidance: For families prioritizing compassionate staff, cleanliness, a home-like environment, and affordability, St Peter's is presented as a strong candidate. Prospective residents should verify bathroom arrangements for specific rooms, confirm the level of clinical care available, clarify current dining menus and activity schedules, and confirm parking and transportation plans during a visit. This will ensure alignment between the facility’s strengths and the resident’s care and lifestyle needs.

About The Senior Residence at St Peter's

The Senior Residence at St Peter's sits in River Edge, New Jersey, right next to Van Saun Park and close to doctors, hospitals, and local spots. The building has 23 private residences which make it small, homey, and easy to get to know everyone; it feels more like a friendly college dorm or bed and breakfast than a big nursing home, with high ceilings, hardwood floors, cozy rooms-many with private bathrooms-and spaces like a sun porch, a sundeck, and a therapeutic garden for planting flowers or just spending time outside in the fresh air. Staff stay on-site around the clock, offering help as needed, from bathing and dressing to managing medications, and they're happy to lend a hand at all hours, whether it's night or day. Residents get three home-cooked meals every day in the family dining room, where staff and neighbors often eat together, and meals suit all sorts of dietary needs, with snacks like fruit and options for collaborative cooking, so nobody's left out or hungry if they want something at odd hours.

Housekeeping keeps rooms neat and clean, with linens changed weekly, and personal laundry service's available for a small fee. The utilities and cable are included in the standard cost, making billing straightforward. The activity calendar is busy, but no one's forced to join in; folks can try movie nights, card games, storytelling, walks, exercise classes, and gardening, plus trips right next door to Van Saun Park with its walking trails and bike paths, and even volunteer at the local church or school. Residents come from all faiths and backgrounds, and the place is non-denominational, with offsite devotional services for those who want them. The small size helps staff know each person well, so care's personal and family-like rather than rushed or distant.

The Senior Residence at St Peter's has been around for a decade, run by a nonprofit called Building Communities, Inc., providing affordable boarding and care in what they call a Class C boarding house, not a medical institution, but they cover a range of needs, with independent living, assisted living, memory care, and skilled nursing support available. Their trusted owner status matters for families and owners, and tools exist for tenants and their families to manage leases, documents, and preferences, plus special dashboards and lease management sections to keep things running smoothly. Owners can list properties or estimate market rent, and there's a proprietary review scoring system that tracks community opinions across the web, which lately averages 9.8 out of 10 for the sense of care and support. The rooms are studios, helping support privacy, and the common areas like the library, dining rooms, and exercise spaces encourage gathering and conversation.

Meals, activities, medication help, and 24-hour staffing all come in one all-inclusive rent, so residents and their families know what to expect. The place feels like a family, and neighbors tend to become friends, with a real sense of warmth, safety, and belonging for people who want a simpler, friendlier spot to live-especially if they prefer a quiet, tight-knit household over the bustle of a larger building. Staff always try to go above and beyond with care, talking with residents, planning activities that match interests, and making sure everyone has choices about how to spend the day-though if someone wants to relax or keep to themselves, that's fine too. The atmosphere is relaxed and personal, with the nonprofit's commitment to offering the best possible quality of life for the lowest possible cost, and their staff aim to know the details that make each resident unique. Overall, The Senior Residence at St Peter's suits older adults or disabled people from all backgrounds who want some help, a safe environment, and friendly company, without giving up the feeling of living in a real home.
