    Immaculate homelike affordable Cambridge care

I placed my parent here and couldn't be happier - Elizabeth in particular and the whole staff are wonderful, the care is reliable and expert, and the home is immaculate and genuinely homelike. Located in the lovely village of Cambridge, it was affordable for us and feels well cared for.

    Summary of reviews

Overall impression The Mansion at South Union is described by reviewers as a small, homelike assisted living residence housed in a historic mansion. Families consistently noted a high level of cleanliness and a domestic atmosphere; the facility’s upkeep appears to be a clear operational priority. Many reviewers expressed satisfaction with the cost structure, describing the finances as workable for their situations.

Care and staff Staff performance is the most prominent positive pattern. Reviewers emphasize compassionate, responsive caregivers and reliable clinical competence; a specific team member, Elizabeth, is repeatedly singled out for exceptional service. The tone of feedback indicates steady day-to-day attention and a level of clinical familiarity that families value. At the same time, comments imply the facility is best suited for residents who require assisted living-level supports rather than very high-dependency medical care.

Dining and activities The available summaries do not contain substantive, consistent detail about dining quality or the breadth of activities programs. The homelike description and small scale suggest a more personalized, home-style approach to meals and social programming, but there is insufficient information to draw firm conclusions about menu variety, therapeutic activities, or an organized activity calendar.

Facilities and accessibility The building’s historic character is repeatedly noted as an asset—an “old mansion” that is well cared for and contributes to a quaint, village-like setting. Reviewers also describe the physical plant as dated, which implies potential limitations in modernization and accessibility. Families should consider whether the mansion layout and older infrastructure meet specific mobility or equipment needs.

Management and admissions Management appears effective at maintaining cleanliness and a homelike environment, and reviewers describe financial arrangements that worked for them. A consistent limitation reported is constrained availability: the facility may have limited openings or a restricted capacity for residents who need daily, hands-on care. Prospective residents with higher-intensity care needs should verify current admission criteria, waiting-list status, and the scope of clinical services available.

Notable patterns and suitability The dominant themes are high staff responsiveness, strong cleanliness standards, and a comfortable, historic setting. The Mansion at South Union may be particularly well suited to couples who wish to remain together, those seeking a small, personal environment, and families prioritizing attentive caregiving in a homelike setting. Conversely, those requiring intensive daily medical or nursing-level services, or who need a highly modern, fully accessible facility, should assess whether the Mansion’s historic facility and limited capacity align with their clinical and logistical needs.

About The Mansion at South Union

The Mansion at South Union sits on seven quiet acres in Cambridge, NY, and offers a mix of assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing, independent living, and continued care retirement community (CCRC) options, so most folks can find what they need there, whether it's help with daily tasks, support for memory issues, or a place to call their own as they age. The building is a well-kept older mansion with both indoor and outdoor common areas, including a large garden, walking paths, and sitting spots that look out over streams, so residents can spend time outdoors or relax indoors with cable TV, Wi-Fi, or a good book from the small library. Housecleaning and laundry services help keep things in order, while the kitchen staff prepares meals with attention to special diets like diabetic care or allergies, and the dining room offers restaurant-style seating, so meals feel social and comfortable for residents, who can have snacks or meals throughout the day depending on their needs.

There are many activities every day, and residents often help run things themselves, or join in on social, creative, or devotional events, since spiritual support is available with on-site and off-site devotional services. Staff includes nurses, a doctor on call, dentists, and therapists-there's help for things like incontinence care and medication management, plus mobility help with bathing, dressing, and transfers, and a 24-hour call system with full supervision, so even folks with Alzheimer's or other forms of dementia get the support they need in a safe and secure setting. The beauty salon and barber shop help with grooming, there's wheelchair accessible showers, and rooms come furnished with views and comforts for daily living.

Residents can keep some of their independence thanks to personalized care plans, aging in place options, and plenty of social and wellness programs that aim to keep everyone mentally and physically engaged, which means there are always ways to socialize, be active, or find quiet time, whether in the arts room, gardens, or just walking around the grounds. The facility accepts both men and women, is pet friendly, and has a no-smoking policy indoors. They allow both long-term stays and shorter respite stays. Staff offers complimentary transportation and on-site parking, so doctor visits and outings are easier.

With high ratings from residents and families-plus past awards-The Mansion at South Union has become known for friendly staff, attention to detail, tidiness, and a comfortable atmosphere that tries to make residents feel valued. The community is close to hospitals and doctors, too, which helps if extra care is needed. All in all, the place blends historic charm with plenty of practical support and choices for seniors who want a safe home with both companionship and care.
