    Compassionate, professional care; recommended overall

I'm very pleased with my family's experience at Fieldston - the staff (special thanks to Gabriel and Tiffany) were professional, compassionate, and went above and beyond. Therapy and the recreation program were excellent, social services and communication with family were clear and supportive, and the facility felt clean and welcoming. I'd recommend this center and feel confident choosing it again, as small improvements would make it outstanding.

    Summary of reviews

Independence Care Center elicits highly polarized impressions. A substantial set of reviews praises the facility’s rehabilitation program, therapy teams, and many direct-care staff for producing measurable functional gains and for being compassionate and attentive. Families frequently cite strong PT/OT/speech therapy, an active recreation program, accommodating dining staff, and assistance from social services and ancillary departments (transport, maintenance, radiology) as clear strengths. Several accounts also describe visible improvements under recent leadership changes and reliable 24-hour nursing coverage in some units.

At the same time, persistent operational weaknesses appear across reviews and merit careful consideration. Staffing levels and workload are recurring concerns: reviewers describe chronic understaffing, high workloads, and attendant delays in attending to resident needs. Those staffing constraints are linked to variability in responsiveness, inconsistent personal-care routines (for example, bathing and grooming schedules), and uneven oversight on memory-care units. Reviewers also note gaps in physician availability and medication/clinical-coverage continuity, which families should clarify during a tour or intake conversation.

Cleanliness and facility maintenance are described inconsistently. Many families describe clean, well-maintained common areas and an overall tidy environment, while others report sanitation- and odor-related concerns, maintenance problems (hot-water availability, cracked fixtures), and pest-control issues in some areas. Room configuration and occupancy also vary: there are reports of shared rooms with limited private space and occasional overcrowding. Property-management lapses are a significant operational pattern—reviews reference unsecured belongings, missing items, and a lack of systematic lost-and-found processes; there are also allegations of missing personal property that prospective families should investigate.

Communication and management accessibility show similar contrast. Some social-services staff receive high praise for helping with paperwork and family coordination, while other accounts describe unresponsive or hard-to-reach social workers and administrative personnel. Documentation and care-plan transparency are inconsistent in practice, with instances of delayed or incomplete discharge/planning paperwork. In addition, reviewers raise concerns about staff training gaps related to dementia care, resident-centered communication, and the need for clearer policies to prevent discriminatory or unprofessional language.

Dining and activities are generally seen as strengths when staffing and coordination are functioning: reviewers highlight accommodating kitchen staff, enjoyable meals, and a robust schedule of recreational activities that support recovery and social engagement. However, activity offerings are described as inconsistent across units and shifts; families of residents with memory impairment should ask about tailored programming and supervision.

For prospective residents and families: the facility can offer strong clinical rehabilitation and many dedicated caregivers, but the quality of day-to-day experience appears highly dependent on unit staffing, shift, and recent management actions. Recommended pre-admission steps include touring multiple units and shifts, asking for current staffing ratios, inquiring about physician and on-call coverage, reviewing property-handling and incident-report policies, requesting examples of dementia-care training, and verifying infection-control and maintenance protocols. These checks can help align expectations with the variable experiences reflected in the reviews.

    About Independence Care Center

Independence Care Center is a senior living facility in Riverdale, New York, looking out over the Hudson River and the Palisades, and boy, people do get a nice view there. The place offers 24-hour care services, so residents get help day and night with things like bathing, dressing, medication management, and whatever everyday tasks they might have trouble with. The staff includes caregivers giving constant supervision, a Medical Director, attending doctors on call at all times, and nurses on duty 12-16 hours each day, and there's always someone to answer when residents use the 24-hour call system, which means families can worry a little less.

They've got different kinds of care like skilled nursing with wound care, help for people with Alzheimer's, assisted living, long-term care for folks who can't live on their own anymore, and memory care programs with 24-hour support and memory activities. People who need short-term help can get respite care, and those recovering from something big can use their Accelerated Care Plus, with offerings like Electrical Muscle Stimulation, E-Stim, wound care, pain treatment, and things like therapy and rehabilitation for the heart, lungs, or after a stroke. The rehab services cover occupational, physical, and speech therapy, plus specialty care for breathing problems, neurological issues, and stomach or skin disorders, and there's even restorative care and case management to keep things organized.

Residents have access to live-in comforts like furnished rooms with private bathrooms, kitchens, cable TV, air conditioning, phones, and Wi-Fi, so it's about as modern as senior living gets, I suppose, and amenities like an arts and crafts room, small library, computer center, dining room, exercise room, outdoor walking paths, gardens, and spaces for group activities like chess or movies. They've made things easier by offering housekeeping, laundry, linen services, room cleaning, and cooking-dietitians plan nutritious and culturally diverse meals and check up on everyone's nutrition, so people have less to worry about.

There are programs and activities with everything from arts and crafts, pottery classes, gardening, and fitness sessions to games, movie nights, live music, and religious services, and social workers help residents and families with counseling or support groups. The place welcomes community events and even arranges transportation for residents who need to go somewhere not related to medical visits, though they've also got on-site testing to keep trips out to a minimum.

Independence Care Center keeps focused on helping people live their daily lives with dignity and gives extra support when needs get more complicated, and all of it happens in a calm, well-kept landscape that feels home-like-even the Fieldston Lodge part of the building adds to that touch. Their mix of medical care, social activities, and scenic environment helps seniors and their families settle in and feel supported through every stage.
