    Clean home, caring bilingual staff

I'm very pleased with St. Michael's - a clean, well-maintained, home-like place with caring, bilingual staff and an administrator who truly goes above and beyond. With careful med management, an on-site doctor and hairdresser, a lovely chapel and Greek cultural activities, tasty meals and plenty of social spaces, my family has peace of mind and I happily recommend it.

    Summary of reviews

Overall impression: St. Michael's Home presents as a culturally focused, church‑centered assisted living option with many families and residents describing a warm, home‑like environment. Strengths frequently cited include a caring staff culture, organized admissions and administrative processes, and strong infection‑control practices during the COVID‑19 period. The facility offers on‑site medical support with regular physician visits, a weekly hairdresser, and other conveniences that support daily living.

Care and staff: Numerous accounts emphasize compassionate, family‑style caregiving and staff who know residents by name. Staff are frequently described as attentive to daily needs, encouraging residents to socialize and stay active, and managing medications through structured oversight. However, a contrasting pattern appears in other accounts: inconsistent responsiveness, problematic staff conduct in certain interactions, and delays or variability in personal‑care assistance. These operational inconsistencies suggest staffing performance and conduct may vary by shift or individual caregiver.

Dining and activities: Dining is a clear asset for many residents — meals are described as tasty, nutritious, and culturally relevant (notably Greek cuisine and holiday cooking). The kitchen and dining staff are repeatedly praised for attentiveness. The activities program appears robust and age‑appropriate, with daily options including arts and crafts, social events, and opportunities to attend religious services. The on‑site Greek Orthodox chapel and regular cultural programming are important draws for residents seeking a faith‑centered lifestyle.

Facilities and services: The physical plant is generally characterized as clean, well‑maintained, and serene, with multiple communal options such as a large dining room, patio seating, backyard, recreation room, and a chapel. On‑site services (doctor visits, hairdresser, community room) add convenience and continuity for residents. Bilingual staff availability is an advantage for non‑English speakers, and families often report peace of mind because of the visible community structures and organized routines.

Management and notable patterns: Administrative performance is described in mixed terms. Many families praise organized, helpful administrators who facilitate admissions, finances, and resident well‑being. Conversely, there are serious, specific concerns raised by others about communication breakdowns, failures to notify families promptly, and questions about billing or financial transparency. There are also a few allegations regarding how end‑of‑life communication and transfers were handled; these are serious individual claims that warrant direct inquiry. Taken together, the pattern suggests variability in management follow‑through and documentation practices rather than a uniform experience.

Recommendations for prospective families: Prospective residents and families should weigh the facility's strong cultural fit, active social program, and on‑site medical services against the noted variability in staff responsiveness and administrative transparency. When evaluating St. Michael's, ask for details about staffing ratios and turnover, incident‑reporting and family‑notification protocols, medication administration policies, billing safeguards, and recent state inspection reports. An in‑person tour that includes observation of meal service, activities, and staff–resident interactions can help corroborate the strengths described and identify any operational gaps to discuss with management.

    About St Michael's Home

St Michael's Home is a non-profit adult care facility that has served older adults since 1958, keeping a Greek Orthodox environment and mission. The community sits close to restaurants, shops, Fay Park, and important hospitals like St. Johns Riverside and St. Joseph's Medical Center, so medical help and outings are nearby. The facility has assisted living, memory care for Alzheimer's, retirement apartments, and independent living options, and people can find studio or one-bedroom apartments with different floor plans. The place has a secure Memory Care Wing for people with dementia, and staff provide health care like diabetic care, non-ambulatory care, incontinence care, along with help with daily tasks and medication management. Meals are provided every day, and there's a dining area where residents can eat together. There are common areas, indoor lounges, a Kafeneio/Coffee Lounge, a Taverna, a Beauty Salon, a gym, a Physical Therapy Room, and a Greek Orthodox chapel where people can attend devotional activities. Walking paths and garden spaces let residents go outside, and you'll see a focus on activities and programs that support faith, culture, and community. The staff is known for being caring and professional, and the buildings stay clean with room for more than 150 residents. The community offers many payment options and works to keep costs clear for families. St Michael's Home has earned high ratings in resident satisfaction and activities, placing in the top 8% among similar communities, and it has a community score of 8.9 for overall quality. The facility offers round-the-clock supervision and can support many needs as people age, so residents can stay in one place as their care level changes. As the needs of Greek American seniors grow, St Michael's Home is expanding with a state-of-the-art new campus in Uniondale, Long Island, called the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) Campus, to help more people and offer higher levels of care with the same focus on compassion, faith, and a home-like feeling that's been the goal since the beginning, and you can view a virtual tour online to see more about the future site. The facility continues to update and add new wings, keeps improving buildings and services, and seeks to provide a safe, nurturing, and respectful place where residents can live with dignity and love, whether they moved here from Greece years ago or have grown up in the United States.
