    Spotless facility, compassionate skilled staff

I had my father at this facility after hip surgery and was very pleased. The building and rooms are spotless and comfortable, cleaned daily, and the staff treated him with dignity and respect. Nurses, aides and the rehab team (daily PT/OT, Donna and Jen stood out) were professional, skilled and compassionate - they kept us informed and helped him recover quickly. Social work and administration were knowledgeable and proactive (nurse manager Violetta a gem), meals and amenities were fine, and visiting was easy. I highly recommend this center for inpatient rehab and skilled care.

    Summary of reviews

Reviews describe a facility with clear strengths in rehabilitation, therapy, and certain caregiving teams, but also notable and recurring operational weaknesses. Many families and patients praised the physical- and occupational-therapy staff for producing measurable functional improvement, and multiple accounts highlight rapid recovery and attentive therapists. Nursing and aide teams are frequently described as compassionate and effectiveโ€”several individuals and shifts receive strong commendation for professionalism, daily room cleaning, and hands-on support. The facility's physical plant is often characterized as clean, modern, and airy, with private-room options, en-suite bathrooms, an on-site hair salon, and easy access to the adjacent hospital.

At the same time, experiences appear highly variable depending on unit, shift, and individual staff members. A common pattern is inconsistency in staffing levels and coverage, with daytime coverage often stronger than evenings, nights or weekends; this contributes to repeated reports of long waits for assistance, delayed pain management, and delays getting residents to the bathroom. Reviewers describe uneven staff competence and conductโ€”while some nurses and aides are singled out as excellent, others are described as brusque or unhelpful. These variations have translated into family concerns about dignity of care, missed or delayed medications and treatments, and problems with basic care routines such as bathing and toileting assistance.

Infection-control, sanitation, and related safety issues are prominent themes in a subset of reviews. While many accounts emphasize a consistently clean environment, other reviews raise sanitation concerns, infection events (including C. difficile and COVID transmission), and pest-control or odor issues in particular areas. Safety incidents such as falls and problems with transfers are also reported; these items are framed by families as indicators of gaps in transfer-safety practices, supervision, and shift staffing. Several reviewers also expressed concerns about roommate compatibility, temperature control in rooms, and occasional environmental issues (for example, outdoor patio maintenance and bee activity).

Dining and activities receive mixed feedback. Some reviewers praise meal-service, encouragement to eat, and the availability of substitutions; others describe inconsistent food quality and occasional missed or delayed meals. The facility's activity programming, communal spaces, and social offerings earn generally positive remarks, and visiting access is described as convenient by many families. Management and communication experiences are likewise mixed: some families commend specific administrators, the director of social work, and nurse managers for clear, proactive coordination and discharge planning, while others report poor family communication, unhelpful social work interactions, and billing or cost-transparency problems. A small number of reviews make serious claims relating to billing and clinical practices; these are noted as allegations and represent potentially serious, though not uniformly corroborated, concerns.

Overall, the facility appears capable of delivering excellent rehabilitative care and compassionate support under strong staffing conditions, but it also shows operational variability that can materially affect patient experience. Prospective residents and families should weigh the facility's strong therapy program, clean environment, and proximity to the hospital against reported inconsistencies in staffing, responsiveness, infection-control practices, and physician communication. When considering placement, families may find it useful to ask specific questions about shift staffing ratios, infection-prevention protocols, dementia-care capabilities, medication-administration procedures, and billing transparency, and to request references from recent short-term rehab patients to better assess consistency for their particular needs.

About St. Catherine of Siena Nursing & Rehab

St. Catherine of Siena Nursing And Rehabilitation Care Center sits in Hauppauge, NY and offers care to people who need long-term nursing, short-term rehabilitation for things like orthopedic recovery, and extra support when dealing with medical needs, and they've got 120 beds for long-term care and a separate skilled nursing facility with 240 beds inside the hospital, so there's quite a bit of space for folks who might need to stay a while or just a bit. The place runs around the clock every day and has teams of nurses, dietitians, therapists, and social workers who work together to help with health and daily care, and there are special units if someone has Alzheimer's disease, plus options for hospice and palliative medicine. St. Catherine of Siena is a not-for-profit place, so the focus stays on the residents more than anything else, and they've been doing this since 2000, always aiming for solid clinical quality and personalized wellness, and they give people a choice of spiritual support if that's important to them, no matter what faith someone comes from. The facility has received several awards, like the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Outstanding Leadership Award for eliminating ventilator-associated pneumonia, the GOLD PLUS Seal from the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association, and the Pinnacle Award for Quality and Patient Safety from HANYS, and it's listed by Becker's Hospital Review as having low heart attack mortality rates, which says something about how they watch out for folks' heart health. The American College of Radiology has named it a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence, and the Joint Commission has accredited the place with a Gold Seal and Top Performer recognition, so their standards stay high. St. Catherine of Siena also has hospital services including a Center for Hyperbaric Medicine and Wound Healing, Siena Women's Health Pavilion, an endoscopy suite, an oncology unit, a dialysis unit, a cardiac care unit, psychiatric services, and a separate medical office building, and it all comes together as part of Catholic Health, so people can access a range of health and support services under one roof. The community is rooted in a history from St. John's Smithtown Hospital and runs at 296-bed capacity across hospital and care center, and it's got an average rating of 3.0 from 23 reviews, so folks looking for basic information can keep that in mind, and there's a website where people can get directions if they're planning a visit or want to learn more for themselves or someone they care about. The staff takes a team approach to wellness, with an emphasis on helping both residents and families navigate resources for long-term care, including advice on family caregiving and long-term care insurance.
