    Warm attentive staff, clean home

I completed a FaceTime assessment and a smooth move-in-Tamara (and Laura) were warm, knowledgeable and responsive, answered all our questions, and stayed in touch after admission. The renovated memory care wing and lobby are clean and home-like, dining and activities are excellent, and staff genuinely care for residents. My mom feels comfortable and I feel reassured-very pleased with the experience and would recommend this community.

    Summary of reviews

Overall impression The Veranda Assisted Living is described by many families as a welcoming, well-appointed community with notable strengths in admissions support, memory-care services, and day-to-day caregiving. Positive remarks concentrate on a staff culture that many families find compassionate and attentive, and on admissions staff who provide clear guidance and hands-on transition support. The facility’s recent renovations — particularly the memory-care wing, lobby, and dining areas — and on-site amenities such as a theater and ample parking contribute to an atmosphere that many reviewers characterize as comfortable and hotel-like.

Care and staff Care quality is a consistently highlighted strength: reviewers frequently praise nurses and caregivers for kindness, dignity-preserving interactions, and personal knowledge of residents. Admissions coordinators and specific leaders are repeatedly named for being responsive and calming during transitions, which appears to ease family concerns during placement. Leadership accessibility and ongoing family communication (including photo and FaceTime updates) are recurring positives, supporting confidence in daily oversight and responsiveness in many cases.

Dining and activities The community offers an active calendar with shopping trips, park outings, birthday celebrations, and on-site activities that families report help residents stay engaged. Dining spaces are commonly described as attractive and well-maintained; however, comments about meal quality are mixed. While some families note enjoyable dining experiences, others raise concerns about inconsistent food quality and meal service reliability, indicating variability in the dining program that prospective families should clarify during a tour and meal sampling.

Facilities and environment Physical updates and cleanliness receive frequent praise. Multiple reviewers note renovated memory-care areas, attractive lobbies, and well-kept resident rooms. The environment is often described as home-like and comfortable. Notwithstanding these positive notes, there are also serious operational concerns raised: pest-control and sanitation issues are alleged in some accounts, and a few reviewers describe odor or cleanliness concerns in common areas. Additionally, an entrance/exterior repair need that could pose a safety or vehicle-damage risk was mentioned; families should inspect exterior access and maintenance during visits.

Management and patterns to monitor Communication and administrative responsiveness are generally cited as strengths, especially around admissions and financial assistance. At the same time, patterns of inconsistent front-desk professionalism and availability, delayed responses to some resident needs, and perceived prioritization of financial considerations over individualized preferences appear in several accounts. Privacy limitations from shared-room configurations were also noted by reviewers who experienced two-person rooms. Finally, there are a small number of strongly worded negative accounts, including allegations of severe sanitation and pest-control problems; these stand in contrast to the majority of positive reports and merit direct follow-up with management and regulators as part of due diligence.

Actionable guidance for prospective families Prospective residents and families should weigh the facility’s clear strengths in personalized dementia care, active programming, and a supportive admissions team against the operational concerns described above. Recommended steps before placement include an unannounced visit during mealtime, inspection of both common and private spaces (including any shared rooms), direct questions about pest-control protocols and recent inspection records, discussion of staffing ratios and response-time expectations, and confirmation of entrance and exterior maintenance plans. These checks will help verify which patterns reflect isolated incidents and which reflect ongoing operational practices.

    About The Veranda Assisted Living

The Veranda Assisted Living is a large, newly renovated, high-rise facility on Staten Island with 363 beds, and it's part of the New York State Participating ALP Program, so it does accept Medicaid to help keep care affordable for many people. Residents can choose private or semi-private rooms, some of which are ADA compliant and all have call bell systems for quick help when needed, and the building is only minutes from the Staten Island Ferry and Verrazano Bridge, providing nice views of the Manhattan and Brooklyn skylines. Staff offer 24/7 supervision and support, making sure people get help with daily tasks like bathing, dressing, and medication management, and the facility pays close attention to safety, comfort, and independence through personalized care plans and a home-like, welcoming atmosphere where residents can feel comfortable bringing their pets.

On the medical side, The Veranda Assisted Living provides on-site care from experienced physicians and a fully staffed medical clinic, with specialists available for different health needs, as well as offering rehabilitation, therapy, and memory care services, including a new Memory Care Wing for those living with Alzheimer's or dementia. Social engagement is important here, so there are daily activities, special events, yoga, meditation, fitness classes, and spiritual programs, all designed to look after both the body and mind and help everyone feel part of the community.

Meals are served restaurant-style three times a day with extra light meals available, and the kitchens provide a variety of food to keep things interesting. Residents have access to WiFi, cable, weekly laundry, daily housekeeping, and recreation rooms, so daily life stays comfortable, connected, and lively. The Veranda Assisted Living emphasizes social connections and a sense of belonging, focusing on helping each person maintain as much independence as possible while always making sure help and medical care are close at hand whenever needed.
