    Warm, hotel-like, caring memory-care community

I'm very pleased with Sunrise - the warm, hotel-like atmosphere, immaculate rooms and grounds, and genuinely caring staff (memory-care team led by Janelle and Mia) give our family real peace of mind. Meals, activities, attentive medical care and personalized, family-style service are excellent; I happily recommend this well-run, welcoming community.

    Summary of reviews

Sunrise of Staten Island elicits a broadly mixed but informative set of impressions. Many families and residents describe a clean, hotel-like environment with modern, well-maintained common areas and private-pay amenities. The campus offers a dedicated memory-care unit with separate dining, in-room kitchenettes and emergency-call systems, and on-site rehabilitation and medical services. Reviewers frequently note compassionate, attentive caregivers, personalized care planning at move-in, active programming (including bingo, outings, and classes), and a generally welcoming, family-like atmosphere.

Care and staff performance is a clear strength for many families: staff are described as kind, respectful of resident dignity, and willing to engage residents by name. Several reviews praise individualized attention, successful transitions from other settings, and reassurance provided to families. At the same time, there is a pattern of variability in staff performance and floor coverage. Concerns include staffing shortages at times, inconsistent responsiveness during some shifts, and gaps in clinical oversight—specifically around skin-care/wound prevention, safe transfers and fall-response protocols, and timely assistance with activities of daily living. A few reviewers described serious incidents and allegations (including personal-property and conduct concerns), which suggests families should ask about supervision, incident-reporting, and security measures during tours.

Dining and activities are generally seen as robust features: many residents enjoy varied menus, dietary accommodations, social dining areas, and frequent activities. Multiple reviewers called out high-quality meals and plentiful programming. Conversely, others reported inconsistent meal quality (cold or poorly timed service) and variable engagement opportunities for residents who do not participate in group activities. Activity staffing and program continuity also appear to fluctuate over time, with occasional turnover in activity leadership noted.

Facilities and accommodations receive mostly positive comments for cleanliness, décor, and upkeep. The property feels resort-like to many visitors and offers conveniences such as snack bars and communal living spaces. Operationally, room size and layout are common limitations: several units are described as small, with some back-facing rooms lacking views or natural light. Two-room apartments and upgraded units are described as costly, reinforcing the perception of a premium price point for larger or better-located rooms.

Management and administrative issues are an important recurring theme. Families often cite opaque pricing, unexpected additional fees, and billing discrepancies; communication from leadership can be inconsistent after the initial move-in period. Positive accounts reference attentive administrators and clear communication during transition, but negative accounts describe delayed responses, confusing fee structures, and variable follow-through on family requests. Prospective residents should request written fee schedules, ask about staffing ratios and escalation procedures, and clarify expectations for family updates and care reporting.

Overall pattern: the facility appears to offer high-quality amenities, many examples of compassionate caregiving, and active programming that suit a wide range of residents—particularly those who can benefit from hotel-style services and a separate memory-care unit. However, there is meaningful variability in experience across shifts and units, and operational weaknesses (pricing transparency, staffing consistency, clinical oversight, and occasional security/privacy concerns) have been raised. Families considering Sunrise of Staten Island are advised to tour multiple unit types, review the fee schedule carefully, ask about staffing levels and clinical protocols (wound prevention, transfers, incident reporting), and obtain a clear plan for family communication and care updates prior to commitment.

    About Sunrise of Staten Island

Sunrise of Staten Island sits in a lively neighborhood and has a classic-looking mid-rise building with landscaped grounds, a covered entryway, and a grand two-story foyer with comfortable seating for visitors and residents, while the place offers different apartment types like studios, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom options, which makes it possible for people to pick what fits their needs and lets folks have a bit of personal space and privacy, and the apartments in memory care have extra touches like accessible bathrooms with grab bars for safety and some studios have full kitchens, showing they keep safety and comfort in mind. This community makes room for pets, so people who love their animals can bring them, and you'll find outdoor patios with pergolas, wicker furniture, lush plants, a memory care porch with rocking chairs and flower baskets, and inside there's a cozy fireside lounge, a bistro with a jukebox and coffee bar, and dining rooms with light green tablecloths and floral chairs, where skilled chefs cook up meals every day.

Residents can join in programs-there are daytime and evening activities every day, and things like cooking classes, rides to local attractions several times a week, a daily conditioning club to stay fit, and activities that work on the mind, body, and spirit, and family and friends are welcome to join in on outings and events as the community tries to keep everyone connected. Sunrise of Staten Island is well known for both assisted living and memory care, so folks who need a hand with daily things like bathing or taking medicine, or who have memory loss or dementia, can get the care and support they need, and there's always staff for round-the-clock nursing if someone needs more help, and specialized memory care programs like Reminiscence Program and Terrace Club are on offer for people with Alzheimer's or other forms of dementia.

The building is handicap accessible, has Wi-Fi and high-speed internet, and offers transportation for residents who need to go out, so life feels more flexible and active for older adults whether they're active and independent or need extra care. Sunrise of Staten Island offers different types of living, including independent living for healthy seniors who want a lively social setting and don't need help, assisted living with support for daily routines, skilled nursing for those with medical needs, respite and short-term stays, hospice care, and Dignity Home Care for folks who want support at home with everyday things or companionship.

Services are organized with an executive director at the helm and a well-liked concierge, Linda Myers, who's known for being honest, caring, kind, and helpful to residents and families. The community keeps up to date with the latest aging research and has been around for more than 35 years, with a focus on bringing quality and innovation to how residents live, and being part of the Staten Island Chamber of Commerce means they're active locally in business and community events. The management encourages residents to take part in activities while respecting their privacy, and offers both maintenance-free living and continuing care, so seniors can find a place to fit their changing needs right on one campus.

People who need extra attention get personalized help, and everything's done with a holistic approach that centers on what each person wants or needs, whether it's restaurant-style dining in a bright room, joining a club, taking a walk outdoors, or having peace of mind knowing there's help around at any time. Sunrise of Staten Island has a 3.9 out of 5 rating from 24 reviews and keeps its doors open 24 hours a day to give support whenever it's needed.
